Frank Grampp and partners sponsor Rooster Day this Saturday with a premium price of 12 cents per pound for all roosters delivered to Henry Myer. Kampp and Sons offer two top prizes including peat moss and salt, in a campaign backed by multiple local merchants to lift poultry quality and markets.
Miss Mary Conlin died Saturday morning at 8:30 at the home of Mr and Mrs Clarence O ke after weeks bedfast. Born in Lone Tree in 1850 she was survived by sisters Kate Longman Mrs Carroll Mrs Ellen Fogarty and others. Funeral mass was held Tuesday at St Josephs church with burial in St Trick s cemetery. Pallbearers included John Carroll Thomas Leonard Longman and others.
Illinois Emergency Commission reports 92 relief cases in Marshall County during April and estimates 172 total “relief” cases across the state. Of those, 166 427 residents are counted as families. Five counties show gains in relief cases including Cass Cook DuPage Franklin Gallatin and others. Other counties show decreases.
Annual pre commencement events start Sunday with the baccalaureate service led by Rev. Bertelson Nabb. Examinations run May 25 26 followed by a 4:00 picnic at Starved Rock and the main commencement on May 29 at ten o clock. A campus picnic dinner, hay queen crowning, and alumni banquet close festivities May 30 at the school gym.
A chimney fire at the Kern residence on Main Street was reported Wednesday morning in Berk. Firefighters quickly controlled the blaze and prevented further damage. No injuries were reported.
W W Dewey and Sons Inc operators of Henry and Sparland elevators announced they have purchased all properties of the bankrupt Smith Hippen company of Pekin. Seven elevators will be rehabilitated. the Henry and Sparland firm continues under a newly chartered company with incorporators H H Dewey C B Dewey and William W Dewey.
Joseph H. Ely aged 58 of 717 Howett Street Peoria shot himself in the yard behind his residence Friday afternoon A 16 gauge shotgun lay beside the body a note on the gun stock asked that his two sons Lloyd and George Ely be notified Coroner William B Elliott found ill health and recent job loss at Isaac Walker Hardware explained the circumstances Funeral services were held Monday at Boland mortuary with interment in St Josephs cemetery survivors include a widow two sons a daughter five brothers and three sisters
Bruce Underwood and Glenn Sarver of Chillicothe were injured in a motorcycle crash on Route 29 near the TY hydraulic press plant. Underwood, driving Sarver’s bike, suffered a fractured pelvic bone and possible internal injuries and was hospitalized in Peoria after the bike’s jiffy stand released and the machine overturned. Sarver was shaken but unhurt beyond bruises. Both worked at the Caterpillar tractor plant in East Peoria.
Advertising Age reports newspapers in sixty cities carried 19,699,187 lines of retail display ads for the week ending May 9, up 8.3 percent from the same week in 1935. The year to date shows an 8,251,370 line increase over 1935.
Mr and Mrs Charles Bourdette and their daughters were Sunday dinner guests of Mr and Mrs Elmer Hunt.
The Henry unit of the American Legion Auxiliary will distribute memorial poppies on Saturday to honor World War dead and raise funds for disabled veterans and families in need. Members, wives, mothers, sisters, and daughters of service members will collect contributions and remind the public to support those who sacrificed for the country.
A Thursday afternoon crash at the cemetery four corners north of the city involved a car driven by C L Clawson a truck from Princeton and a car driven by Mrs Vincent Mercian. Clawson was damaged the truck driver suffered three broken ribs and his vehicle about 200 dollars in damages. Mrs Meridian and her daughter Marie were badly shaken and Harold Klein a passenger suffered facial cuts.
Carroll Mooberry 26 a farmer near Hennepin was arrested by Putnam County Sheriff after being implicated in a May 5 Peoria hold up and a drug store robbery on McClure avenue. Darrell Lyons 24 confessed to armed thefts and named Mooberry as his accomplice. They were identified by the hold up victim and face trial soon per Peoria state attorney.
Memorial exercises at Putnam will May 30. A prominent speaker will deliver an address. Two quartets one of boys and one of girls will perform. The Senachwine Consolidated School band will be present and render selections. All should attend and those who have gone before tributes with wreaths and flowers for departed loved ones. The third free entertainment by Henry business and professional men runs next Thursday evening May 28 in Central Park. No charge, large crowd expected, with staging from the bandstand. Saintly Hypocrites and Honest Sinners portrays life’s cross section and civic decline, featuring a 25 member chorus, 11 piece orchestra, and full technical staff.
One hundred fifty ladies of the Henry M. E. church enjoyed their annual Mother and Daughter banquet in the church basement. Methodist boys served, under L J Huger, with kitchen work by older men led by Charles Bourdette. A pantomime Mother’s Memories featured Wanda Pace, Lois Pace, Joan Wood, Ruth Crabbs, Henrietta Wherry, Judith Shearer, and Eleanor Moore.
The Illinois circles of the Daughters of Isabella met at the Knickerbocker hotel in Chicago on May 16 and 17. Mrs. Ruth Stipp attended as delegate from Henry and Miss Evelyn O'Brien also attended. A banquet followed at the Knickerbocker after a mass at Holy Name cathedral. Miss Mary Orval Conver of Peoria was elected state regent and Mrs. Sarah Ann Peterson became vice regent.
Funeral services were conducted Monday for Mrs. Julia Yaeger at St Marys Catholic Church. She died Friday after an illness lasting more than a year. Interment followed at Calvary Cemetery. Surviving are two daughters, two grandsons, and two brothers, with many relatives from Clifton, Tiskilwa, Rock Island, and Peoria attending.
A coroner’s inquest returned a verdict of death by own action for Frank Hentz whose body was found in bushes near the riverbank close to the old rock wall by the bridge Saturday evening. Witnesses indicated he had planned death for some time and prepared a wire noose and sapling setup. burial followed Tuesday at City Cemetery.
Workmen from Jacksonville Road Builders of Jacksonville Illinois are finishing an oiling and sanding job on Henry streets begun last weekend under city contract. Three carloads of oil are being spread and sanded. the streets will be in better condition than in two years but the oil is messy until absorbed and housewives complain of oil tracking onto rugs and carpets.
Notice to members of Henry Alumni invites those who did not receive the invitation to make banquet reservations by Monday May 25 for the event on Tuesday May 26. Banquet begins promptly at 6 30 oclock.
The Henry Town graduates will hold baccalaureate exercises in the gymnasium Sunday evening May 24. The sermon will be delivered by Rev. John D. Kruvel and benediction by Rev. Roger F. Cressey.
Voters in the fifth judicial district vote on Monday June 1 for Chief Justice Clyde E. Stone seeking re election against Democrat Josef T Skinner. Stone leads with Republican incumbency while Skinner tours Henry and other counties during the nine year separate election. The contest is expected to produce a large turnout.
La Rose defeated Bath-house Jack Parker's group 9 to 6 at the fairgrounds Sunday afternoon in a free hitting game. La Rose totaled 18 hits while Parker's men had 12. Both teams showed poor form with many strikeouts as they prepare for a rematch next Sunday in La Rose.
Outstanding ROTC members from Lacon and Putnam named for the annual military day review. Col. Fred R. Brown announced awards to downstate students including Charles W. Casey of Lacon for coast artillery saber and Harold E. Gocke of Dixon for scabbard and blade in engineering and Dale H. Shick of Putnam in the signal corps.
An open Knights of Pythias meeting will be held at the K of P hall Monday evening May 26. Members from the sixth Illinois zone will attend along with the grand chancellor commander and grand keeper of records and seals. Local Knights seek a large turnout of active and former members.
The cornerstone for the new Lincoln school building at Spring Valley was laid Thursday afternoon by Hoover Opperman of Princeton, contractor, in the presence of Charles Van Schaick, president of the school board, and many spectators. The time capsule includes newspapers about building plans and a photo of Mr. Van Schaick.
