LaVerne LaVerne, a senior at Magnolia High School, won a 500 prize in a state essay contest on banking. His essay The Functions of a Bank and Its Relation to the Community was selected as the best by state judges and he will attend the University of Illinois this fall with expenses paid.
WPA rolls in Henry County are reduced from 38 workers to six as several are moved to a city park and highway beautification project. The transfer includes Hari Baruéas as timekeeper, with others going to a sanitation project in Marshall County. The paving work on Edwards Street proceeds, while a sit-down strike led to warnings of vagrancy charges if workers refuse WPA assignments.
LaVerne Snow son of Mr and Mrs Paul Snow Magnolia farmers received a telegraph Friday announcing he won 500 in an Illinois State Bankers Association essay contest open to all high school seniors in the state. The award honors his ability and Magnolia school training.
Fourteen year old Ellex louiss Kelley of Camp Grove testified at Peoria before Circuit Judge Joseph E Daily that a natural gas explosion in a well house on her father's elm nest camp caused severe burns on April 18 1935. Her brother BE C Kelley filed the suit against Public Service Company of Northern Illinois seeking damages of 25000. She recalled turning off a switch when the gas in the wet house exploded and left her unconscious. Hospital bills totaled over 1000 with treatment extending 15 months.
The Putnam County rural sanitation unit, led by Ralph Lefenbough of Magnolia, will start next week with supervision by the Illinois State Board of Health and the Works Progress Administration. WPA funds cover labor for construction, painting and erection of units, with about 17 000 units produced statewide. Contracts involve the Fair Association and property owners at Ladd and Princeton. The program aids county fairs and public schools. Marshall Putnam Fair Association plans multiple units.
A Friday meeting at Henry city hall begins 7 30 p m to discuss expanding recreational and educational opportunities for local youth through organized activities. Leaders include Lyle Munson and volunteers from the Boy Scout movement, schools, and community groups.
Inland waterways steamer Henry Bridge will resume coal operations on Sunday morning. The vessel carries coal from Pevae Le Chitese to the Gom bmanweelth-adison Company with barges loaded and replaced as needed for the delivery.
Eighth grade commencement exercises for the entire Marshall County will be held at the Henry school gymnasium Friday evening May 28 at 8. County Superintendent U. S. ler is arranging the program. Henry Township High School will host Baccalaureate services Sunday evening May 28 in the gym with Rev. W J Carpenter invited to give the address and the high school chorus to sing two numbers. Commencement exercises are set for Wednesday May 26 at 8 p.m. with Dr. Harry W McPherson of Illinois Wesleyan University as speaker and the chorus performing two songs. The valedictorian is Dorothy Dysart with a 93.741 average and salutatorian Leonard Ries with 92.334. The class gift includes two moving picture cameras and a studio couch for home economics.
Citizens rush to defend and revise Henry’s town slogan urged on highway entrances. A real-estate salesman from Senry praises the line while others propose amending it to Henry, the Best Town in Illinois by a Dam Site the Dam is Gone. The Henry Commercial Club-originated slogan spread widely, shaping the town’s image and prompting calls for official updates.
The Henry Township High School alumni group meets Monday night at the gymnasium May 24. The Henry Christian Church ladies serve a 6:30 banquet, with Commodore Vance and hisPeoria assistant providing sleight of hand and entertainment. Local favorites Dad Lewis Ned Potter Joe McAllister Bruce Bauter perform. Jose Livele leads band. dancing and group singing follow.
The Marshall County Sportsmen's Club announced plans to expand conservation by building a brooders house and pens near Henry for propagating pheasants and quail. A first shipment of 225 pheasants will arrive in June for eight to ten weeks of rearing before release, with subsequent shipments planned throughout the summer and fall.
The operetta Tom Sawyer by Marx Peain is presented by permission of The Raymond A Hofetime Company of Cahiaac. Henry Gymnasium tonight at 8 o clock features 62 roles from grades four to eight with supporting singing games from first to fifth grade.
The Rt. Rev. Joseph H. Schlarman Bishop of the Peoria diocese will confirm a class of 96 at St. Marys Church next Sunday November 23. The candidates include children eight years and older and some adults who have awaited instruction from Rev. Andrew Schauer. A procession from the parsonage to the church will involve sponsors, visiting priests and altar boys.
A grape of workers at a woolen mill organized under the Wagner Act is said to oppose the company's union and its bargaining control. A resident labor spokesman notes no concrete developments but warns that company unions and forced resignations violate federal law and threaten employees' interests.
