Obituary fragment recalls William Wescott Riddell of Steuben County, long tied to the Riddell Hereford farm. He farmed, bred purebred Herefords, and held roles with 4-H, the Illinois Hereford Association, and local Presbyterian circles. He died in January 1964, survived by relatives and partners.
Washington Jack died after a hunting accident near his home when a gun discharged in a room it was being returned to. He is survived by his parents two brothers a sister and grandparents Mr and Mrs Daw son and Mrs East. Eternal services were held Wednesday in Washington.
Bert J Sleater 68 died unexpectedly about 5 am Thursday May 13 at his home in Henry. Funeral held May 16 at Ries Mortuary with Rev C E Bidwell officiating. Burial in Henry Cemetery. Survived by son Bob of Dover NH sister Roscoe Durflinger of Peoria and others. He married Gladys Davis in 1954. many relatives offered thanks to friends.
Lee Titcomb director of civil defense for Henry and Marshall counties, with Ernest Dunbar, traveled to Springfield for a state civil defense directors meeting. The event, sponsored by Norad, drew county leaders and officials, with William Durkee presenting and a Civil Defense showcase before the Illinois legislature.
Henry Senachwine Consolidated High School hosts baccalaureate on Sunday May 24 at 8 pm in the gym with an organ prelude by Edward Fay and a sermon by Reverend Laurence Schumacher. Commencement follows on Friday May 28 with 67 graduates and student speakers Russell Waldschmidt Maria Edwards Duane Bogner Norio Okubo and Susan Selby.

The Henry Junior Woman's Club planted a sycamore on the Henry Senachwine High School campus in spring. The ceremony-free planting is part of an annual community project led by club president Mrs Harold Hart and tree project chairman Mr Calvin Bundy.
At Monday's Henry city council meeting Alderman Ernest Rose explained he cannot accept the police committee chair due to health concerns. He offered to serve on other committees where he has been or will be named.
Varna Rotary Club program chair Leon Clausen introduced Mrs Emma Smartt a Marshall Putnam County nurse as speaker. She reported on health services including tuberculosis school tests vision checks and diseases, with tuberculin testing for school personnel and X-ray follow ups. Visiting Rotarians included Andr Trulin Winston Scott and Lester Leghe. May 25 speaker Olimpio Seixas Brazil a Rotary Fellow. Club plans no June 1 meeting and will join Lacon Rotary’s 25th anniversary on May 26.
The annual spring music program will be held in the Henry Senachwin auditorium at 8 o clock Friday evening, May 21. It features choral and instrumental selections with Sue Rowe on piccolo, Alan Doll on tuba, and Bill Rowe on clarinet, plus a mixed chorus. A nominal admission will go to the band uniform fund.
Attorney James D Hurley Jr of La Salle visited Henry and said Allis-Chalmers of Milwaukee faces a $2 million personal injury suit filed by George Haws of Magnolia. Haws was maimed by a farm machine, the report notes.
News-Republican reporter tests Hofer's Car Wash in Henry measuring an experimental wash time of 15 minutes plus a quick rub down with Kim towels. It notes Hofer's is the only such service in the greater Henry area with Peoria and Streator as the nearest comparables.
The War s n all County Department of Public Aid will relocate on July 1 from the Wagner Dental Arts building to the Illinois Valley Savings and Loan building on Second Street in Henry to gain space. The new quarters total about 980 square feet, with staff including Francis McEvoy Marshall County superintendent, Martha Kelm clerk stenographer, Helen Potter Johnson case worker, Ed Harter serving Marshall and Putnam counties, and other personnel.
The Rev John Sweeny a Catholic priest and superintendent of schools for the Peoria diocese died this morning at St Francis hospital Peoria after sustaining critical injuries in an earlier incident. The death follows a period of medical care and investigation into the injuries.
The Henry County MS event runs May 17 to 21 with Mrs Max Foster and Mrs Al Ofte co chairing. Captains and marchers urge gifts by mail to Mrs Max Foster. Donations from Buda Ottawa Bloomington and others fund research and patient care and drives are planned in more towns.
Hofer’s car wash near Route 29 offers a self service option with coin boxes for shampoo rinse vacuum and optional wax spray. The double stalled facility will operate year round with heated wash bays in winter and aims to attract business people and locals seeking quick tidy ups.
