James A Weaver funeral services held in Sterling

Funeral services for Mrs Louelia Weaver Cassell were conducted at the Baptist church in Sterling with pastor L Masemore in charge. The service included organ music and two vocal selections. She was born November 2 1891 in Chillicothe and lived most of her life in Sterling area. She married Harry V Cassell and had two sons Floyd and James Ed. two daughters and adopted children. She leaves widower James Cassell and many relatives.

Smith selected for Premier Boys State at Illinois fairgrounds

Robert Lee Butch Smith son of Mr and Mrs Leo Smith of Hen t r has been chosen by Henry Post 323 American Legion to attend Premier Boys State for eight days at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield starting Sunday June 19 He is a junior at Henry Senoachwine High School and serves as class treasurer and athletic club treasurer He has played varsity baseball basketball and track this year Assistant selection was made by a Legion committee led by Vince Cofold Candidates are aged 15 to 18 and typically juniors to inspire future applicants He will return to Henry Legion post to report on his Boys State experience.

Ethyle Miller Lacon Buys Nook Theater

Ethyle Miller wife of Jum ie Raymond Miller of Minonk has purchased the Nook Theater in Minonk. She plans improvements and will operate with her uncle Robbie of Minonk in management. Miller aims to offer clean cinema from producers and remove objectionable material. The deal marks her first cinema venture with a planned June opening.

Honor Students Named at Mid-County High School 1955

Shirley Benson named valedictorian of Mid County High School with heavy involvement in band chorus FHA GAA and student government. Marty Watson named salutatorian with extensive FHA GAA and choir roles and leadership ventures. Both plan to attend Illinois colleges next fall.

Board Approves H S High School Teacher Contracts

The Henry Senachwine board of education approved signed contracts for the 1955 56 school year at the regular meeting. Teachers receive a raise based on the schedule, with the board voting to raise the schedule by 100, leading to about 150 more for most faculty next year.

Advertising man Mace Berney killed in Washburn plane crash

Mason R. Berney 36 of Washburn died when his four place light plane crashed in Washburn after a high speed stall during an evening flight from Marshall county airport to Lacon. Witnesses saw the craft fall and strike a tree before skidding into Woodford County. Berney, not a pilot, held a student permit and relied on others to pilot the plane. He is survived by a twin brother, two sisters, and was cremated in Chicago after memorials in Washburn.

Wiedman Plans Bigger Wiedman's Variety Store Rebuild

Ed Wiedman, proprietor, announced plans to rebuild Wiedman's Variety on Edward Street after the April 27 ice house fire. Princeton Legislator Reps Sales Tax in Rotary Address

Funeral rites planned for Mrs Earl W Wherry Putnam

Henry Public Library Annual Report Highlights Growth

The Henry Public Library board met on May 13 and presented the librarian and treasurer reports. The year saw the busiest activity with 12 369 books and magazines borrowed, 406 new volumes added, 195 discarded leaving 6986 total, and the collection described as 18 up to date and in good condition. Insurance for books and furnishings was increased and the financials showed a balance forward of 41419 with income from fines rentals and memberships totaling 11940 and water bill collections 1000 plus county treasurer 2/4673.

Lacon Progress on New Street Lights for Old Settlers Day

The city of Lacon plans mercury vapor street lights to be installed this summer for Old Settlers Day. The city council will cover half of the project cost from motor fuel tax funds.
