An agricultural expert discusses fogging insecticide machines used against blocks of flies. Normal pressure yielded best results while high or low settings caused gaps in protection. Sanitation and thorough spraying before application are emphasized to reduce infestations and improve effectiveness.
The feature notes a decade rise in undulant fever cases, linked to brucellosis in cattle and hogs. Pasteurization protects city residents, but farm milk without it remains a risk. Swine brucellosis control lacks consensus, and repeated testing is needed to clear herds. Farm communities must decide on methods, including tests and slaughter.
Farmers face grape colaspis damage in corn after clover and legume crops, with roots harmed and seedlings stunting. Recommend spring plowing of clover, weed control, delayed planting, high phosphate hill drop fertilizer, and field trials with untreated plots. Lindane and chlordane have been tried with variable results and high cost.
A new University of Illinois booklet Circular 677 presents dairy feeding guidance. It outlines six main practices from hay selection to balanced grain and pasture management to boost milk and butterfat output and profits.

Illinois farm flock owners wonder if two lamb crops annually can be achieved. University of Illinois researchers report it is not feasible under current conditions and more study is needed. Trials using hormones show limited success with about half treated ewes cycling and 30 percent producing lambs, yielding about 40 percent lamb crop for treated ewes. Questions remain on dosage duration long term effects and which hormones work best.
Portable plastic tubing for water delivery to pastures is expected to be more available this spring than galvanized pipe. Sized practical for farms at one-half or three quarters inch, it can be left atop ground or buried. Joints, couplings, and adaptors for waterers are available. life is claimed to be five or more years. Recommendations come from Frank Andrew and Ervin Johnson at Iowa State College.
Ninety six percent of 650 dairy men surveyed favor barn cleaners as a good investment and would recommend them. Farmers with Grade A milk say cleaners help meet health requirements and 69 percent of hiring labor say cleaners improve worker quality. Herds average 34 cows with 50 minutes daily manure cleanup saved. Four main types exist based on herd size barn shape and power. often a small electric motor suffices.
Cattle can spray themselves to deter horseflies using a pedal-activated spray device tested at Dixon Springs Experiment Station in Illinois last summer. Steers passing through a chute trigger the device. a spring recharges the spray for the next animal. Cattle that sprayed themselves outgained untreated ones by 20 to 30 pounds over 38 days.

A reader notes higher egg prices and army purchases boosting fat and shell eggs yet some farmers kill productive hens. He urges expanding poultry output to meet wartime needs and prevent harming the war effort by reducing supplies.
The period May 7-11 saw total receipts of 19 800 hogs 1 825 cattle 610 calves and 125 sheep, with hogs topping at 22.00 early and closing around 21.25. Cattle and calf prices ranged with prime steers up to 38.00 and various grades near steady amid fluctuating weekly supplies.
A University of Wisconsin variety named Piper reduces the prussic acid poisoning risk in early Sudan grass growth. Piper shows greater disease resistance and stays green longer in fall than common Sudan types, while remaining palatable and at least as good for leafiness and seed production.
The Steuben Rangers 4-H club met May 3 at LaPrairie school with 41 attending including parents. Jim Mattingly spoke on Choosing a Gift and Doreen Streitmatter on Selecting Hogs for a Better Litter. Paul Streitmatter was named softball team manager. Wayne Gallup announced the next meeting for May 17 at LaPrairie school.
The May meeting of the Mar Marshall Putnam Rural Youth reported 30 attendees. Plans for the spring dance tonight at Lacon Country Club and an overnight outing August 25 26 were set. A softball team was approved with Ringman as manager. Entertainment included Elvaretta Bennett and Joe Butler.
Henry Whitefield Boosters met at the Burgau Farm building Friday May 11 to discuss cement and farm electricity projects for 4-H members. Plans for a softball team and a special study meeting on farm electricity were announced with refreshments served and a next gathering set for June 1975.
Dick Herm, PR director for the Peoria Livestock Exchange, says cattle numbers will be light for 30 to 60 days and advises marketing ready cattle. He notes price controls may stay and foresees rollbacks in August and October, with fattening limited to average good in beef. Hog prices widen and top out hogs at 200 to 225 pounds as demand shifts to pork. Spring lambs should be marketed at 80 to 95 pounds.
The eighth grade visited Midway Airport the Museum of Science and Industry Marshall Field and Company Toffinetti restaurant and the Chicago Temple. Students answered which sights were most interesting, with Susan Ingels highlighting the Museum exhibits and Sheilah Hurt the doll house and telephone sections.
Students recount museum exhibits at the Museum of Science and Industry and Marshall Field's with remarks on Colleen Moore's doll house the airport Stevens Hotel and Lake Michigan. Several comments name Field's Chicago Temple and the downtown area as memorable attractions.
A compilation of student notes and events includes Duane Arnold and Sheilah Hurt, Lane Tuesday night performances, eighth grade Mrs Hager class reflections, seventh and eighth graders dinner with skits and jokes, graduation practice plans, and thanks to Bill Patrick for publicity support.
Migs Reynolds, town librarian, helped a stalled car at Main and Walnut by calmly offering to use her own engine to start it while the horn-blaring driver stayed in place. The driver stopped after her jesting challenge, ending the disruption.
