Local churches and clubs including Methodist Presbyterian Bible and Others join Henry County Welfare Council to promote a screening of A Square Deal Child. A meeting Friday at the farm bureau hall invites members of the American Legion Post 323 and other organizations to attend and help publicize the event.
A bumper crop of asparagus is anticipated on the Potter farm near Henry with 70 acres in cultivation. Manager Guimond notes 507 acres are ready to cut, and the crop will be shipped to a Canning Company in Princeton. Harvesting runs two months, with daily picking during warm weather as fields mature.

Executors of the estate of the late Esbon D. Coons sold 200 acres at public auction last Thursday afternoon in Werona. J. P. Manley bought 80 acres and Léonard Coons, son of the deceased, took the remaining 120 acres. Both parcels brought 305 per acre.
The 70th annual synod of the Diocese of Quincy met in May 1814 at St. John's Church in Ke Wan es with several hundred clergy and lay delegates. Rt Rev William L Essex presided and Mrs D D Battles led the Woman's Auxiliary. a diocesan banquet and evensong followed at Hotel Kewanee and St. John's Church.
The Henry School Band directed by Arthur Blocher made its first state contest appearance at Macomb last Saturday, with only two other Class D bands present. They earned a third place overall, while several individuals from Sprland Putnam and Henry received honors including Moby Finfgeld second and Jock Ingels third on sousaphone. Joann Clarence of Sparland won first on sousaphone, and John Stipp and Donna Pairan from Putnam earned second on alto sax and sousaphone respectively.
Ray B. Litchfield of the Marshall Putnam AAA committee announces that potato producers under three acres may qualify for the 1947 price support program though farm goals are uncited. Producers must notify the county office before June 1 to be eligible, as excess production has narrowed support to those within acreage goals or under three acres.
Henry Volunteer Fire Department earned more than 915 at the corn festival held in the Henry High School gym on Thursday May 8. About 450 attendees filled the gym and bleachers, with tickets sale approaching 500 and profits partly from soda sales. Organizers led by Walter Duke and Floyd Baker note donations from numerous local businesses and residents, and apologize for an overlooked acknowledgment to Williams Tavern.
The Senachwine honor roll board has been removed and will be placed in a permanent board at Putnam Town Hall. Frank Halagiere will open a Royal Blue market at the Henry location after A P firm closes Saturday night. Halagiere will run the grocery department with World War II veteran Herbert Mattern in charge of meat. The A P chain has closed nearby Eureka Chillicothe Galva and Bradford stores. Rural consolidation with Toluca Grade School was defeated in a May 10 vote.
Baccalaureate exercises are set for Sunday evening May 25 at 8 p m at Putnam Christian Church with Rev G Mullins delivering You and Yours and six graduates named William E Clift Robert A Delsinger Elizabeth Morgan Mary Jean Murphy Eleanor Jane Pierson and Barbara M Wright. Commencement follows Tuesday May 27 at 8 p m with Lloyd French Princeton addressing the school J B Crandall announces Mary Jean Murphy vale dictorian and Barbara M Wright salutatorian.
Dr. Van Houeling, director of the veterinary medical relations department of the Illinois Agricultural Association, will speak Tuesday night to the Marshall Putnam Rural Youth Group at the Farm Bureau building in Henry. His talk, Personality Development and Fitting Oneself to the Responsibilities of Later Life, will start at 8 p.m. Daylight Saving Time. Seniors from all Marshall and Putnam high schools are invited as guests.
John N Wilson, longtime Swaney Community resident, died after several weeks illness. His wife Hannah Mary preceded him October 10, 1944. He leaves three sons Alfred D of Milford Indiana Arthur G and Ralph C of McNabb, one daughter Mrs J D Hawks, two sisters Mrs Laura Carruthers and Mrs Newburn of Chicago. Funeral Friday at 3 PM at the Friends meeting near McNabb. A full obituary will be published next week.
Henry Memorial Post 8943 voting to host a free smoker Friday May 23 with free fish refreshments open to the public starting eight o clock. Regular meetings set for Thursdays eight thirty during summer. VFW Pool Club opens to public membership with new tables cloth and balls. seven tables planned for sale and future upgrades. Charles Morgan Arthur Dorff and Robert Schmitt lead refreshments and committee work.
The 1947 Illinois fair season opens with events in McLeansboro Metropolis and Rushville July 1 to 5. Arnold Benson reports eighty three fairs scheduled, up from seventy five last year, with many county and state fairs listed across multiple dates and counties from July through September.
Chris R. Anderson of Lacon announces Woodland Owners' Co op erative of Peoria Inc offers 800 shares at 25 dollars each to raise 20000 for a portable sawmill and logging outfit. The cooperative, which markets standing trees logs pulpwood and firewood, sees demand for native lumber for local farms. Counties in Illinois affiliate. stock limited to 500 dollars per purchaser.
The Wenona wedding of Mrs. Rose Phillips of Cambridge Iowa and Mr Floyd Bell took place at 2 30 Saturday May 3. The ceremony was by Rev Walter E Lichtsinn at his Wenona home. Rose Phillips arrived in New York on the Queen Elizabeth April 25 with her 10 year old son Keith. Bell, who runs a service station, brought them to Wenona where they are welcomed as the town s first foreign war bride and her son.
The public is invited to a regular monthly health committee meeting in Henry at 8 p.m. Thursday May 22 in the farm bureau building directors' room. Organizers hope representatives from two counties attend and all interested individuals are urged to attend.
Corn planters moved through neighborhoods in Marshall and Putnam Counties on May 15. On well drained soil much corn will be planted this week, while damp low lands will delay planting for days. Soybeans will also be planted on a large scale. East side homes received a heavy rain, slowing progress, while the west side advanced. Oats are sprouting well and pastures are in excellent condition.
Henry Grade School will hold eighth grade commencement in the school gym at 8 p.m. on Friday May 28 DST. The program features invocation by Father C W Clifford, solos by Joe Buter and John Leman, instrumental ensemble, and a list of graduates led by diplomas presented by Dr By Q Dow. Father E M Farrell gives the address with Rev Donald Lam offering benediction. Class colors are red and white, flower carnation, motto To climb the mountain of success we must have spikes of knowledge.
National 4 H Sunday will be observed May 25 with 4 H Club members nationwide pausing to give thanks for experiences and the 4 H program theme Working Together for a Better Home and World Community. Clubs plan food baskets for needy families and flowers for the aged while ministers in some communities include 4 H work in sermons to promote local improvements and aid to distant lands.
Sale dates are claimed Saturday May 17 at a residence on School Street with household effects of the late Mrs Rosa Ball in Lacon I. James Ward is owner. Also every Saturday Henry community sale at the Marshall Putnam Fair Grounds with sale manager Halsey Monler Francis Keegan and Ben McAllister assisting.
The State highway department plans a fifth bid round for Route 29 near Sparland and Route 17 east of Lacon. Project includes 1.53 miles of Route 17 concrete near Lacon Country Club and 4.12 miles of Route 29 concrete north of Sparland. Previous bids were rejected as excessive due to labor and material shortages slowing contract commitments.
The first four grades of Swaney McNabb Grade School at McNabb entertained mothers and friends with a program on Friday May 9 directed by Mrs Pearl Crain and Mrs Rhoda Wright. Pupils presented animal character skits songs recitations a playlet and gifts of potted plants. Nearly one hundred guests attended the PTA room reception with punch cookies and a tulip narcissus centerpiece.
William Wart Steele son of Mr and Mrs John Steele of Henry resigns from guard post at Pontiac State Penitentiary to join his father in the upholstery business. He is a Marine veteran of Iwo Jima discharged in 1945 and is noted for athletic prowess with several local baseball teams ready to sign him. Dewey Wright owner of Dewey's Acres announces free outdoor movies every Thursday night this summer beginning tonight May.
