Reports indicate Marshall County may host an artificial lake near Varna as part of a statewide inland water plan. State conservation agencies evaluated seven potential sites in the eastern part of Marshall and neighboring counties, with initial land acquisition possible in 1961 if funding advances through the General Assembly.
Republican candidate E Wright for state treasurer and W Smith for superintendent of public instruction will attend a reception from 5 to PST at the Club. Both have roots in the Chicago area and Bureau County, with prior roles including administrator work. LaMoille and Peoria connections are noted among attendees and hosts.
Mrs Lyle Buck Garrels 65 died unexpectedly Tuesday morning in Peoria after a routine clinic and shopping trip. She was a longtime Lacon resident, wife of Fred G. Garrels, Marshall County circuit clerk. She held civic roles with First Methodist Church and various local groups, and is survived by her husband, two sisters, a niece and three nephews. Visitation Thursday. funeral Friday at First Methodist Church with burial in Bacon Cemetery.
Henry’s team trains at the Goodrich Chemical plant as utility department staff prepare to fire boilers next Monday. Orville Taylor leads the new department foreman crew with additional local workers to join by May 19.
Lawrence Newman and Henry Harvey along with Lowell Harvey of Lacon were named candidates for Local 641 president at a May 6 meeting at Lacon city hall. Slated for other offices are Roscoe Jason vice president Raymond Pozzi recording secretary and secretary treasurer Lawrence Neuhalsen Julius Seaman and Nicholas Spellious as trustees and A C Gauwitz as business agent. Election set for June 3 with no contest for the presidency.

F H Elhaustn, longtime principal of Mid-County high school Varnt, is appointed superintendent of the Sparland unit school system. He will begin duties July 1, succeeding retiring EL Clinard.
Henry city council awarded Franks Hardware of Sparland the pool improvement contract after bids for oil water heater, floor drains, and new foot baths. The total bid with additions comes to 1588.05 dollars, with labor cost set at 2.25 per hour.
The annual Cancer fund drive in Henry township will be held next Monday night May 19 starting at 7 p m. House to house solicitation will be conducted by the Daughters of Isabella. Mrs Clara Ziegler is the Henry township fund drive chairman for the Marshall Putnam Cancer Society.
Marshall County Red Cross reports the May Henry bloodmobile visit yielded 94 pints, 21 pints below the 115 pint goal and 11 pints short for the year after 103 donors appeared. Despite hard work by committee chair Mrs. Kenneth Chance and many volunteers, outside help was low and store closings amid mushroom season reduced turnout.
Engineers report finds the Henry city hall structurally sound though weathered. Plans include new doors, public restrooms, a two inch water main, and possible removal of the stair to maximize door space. The Harrington lot may be bought for 1000 dollars to extend the building.
Henry lodge 119 AF and AM held its first gathering in the rebuilt Lucas building on May 10 after fire destroyed the prior hall. The event marked the lodge’s return to a dedicated home with two candidates raised to Master Mason and honors for district officers and benefactor Oscar H. Davis who donated the altar.
Henry Illinois hosts the 37th annual Marshall Putnam Fair running Tuesday through Friday August 26 27 28 29 with exhibits vendors and scheduled activities in Marshall Putnam celebrations.
