An old newspaper page promotes a personal accident insurance plan offering protection for fatal injuries, loss of sight, or other accidents. It stresses universal eligibility, broad benefits, and affordability, with examples of everyday risk from travel to school and work.
The 1964 Junior Sports Jamboree for Henry area will be held Saturday May 16 at Henry Senachwine high school track. About 80 boys and girls have signed to compete with events including six relays and 28 track and field races. Winners advance to East Peoria and Sterling Rock Falls state finals. entry deadline extended to May 15.
Edward Fay, band director, aims to expand the Henry school band by adding seven instruments next year. Planned additions include two flutes two trombones one baritone two tenor sax two alto sax one oboe two cornets one tuba two French horns and four clarinets. Outdoor practice is held in Central Park on Wednesdays and Fridays with spectators welcome and drivers asked to provide safe transportation home.
The Marshall Putnam County ASCS office at Henry reports a one week extension for the wheat program sign-up. The new deadline is Friday May 22 and the registration is currently in progress at the Henry office.
In Marshall County Republican and Democratic parties held a special primary to nominate candidates for clerk of the 3rd District Appellate Court. John E. Hall won the Republican nomination defeating Gadon Peace of Ottawa. J Slingsby was the Democratic nominee with write ins. The light turnout included Jam McIntyre Intosh with 18 votes and other local totals reported for the Republican slate across several townships.
Putnam County voters chose on Tuesday May 12 with 44 ballots cast for the appellate court clerk of the Third Judicial District. John B. Hall led Gordon Peace 19 to 10 in Putnam, 14 write in votes for Emmett Slingshy, Ottawa, and one blank ballot. Five election judges oversaw a single precinct in the county clerk's office at the courthouse in Hennepin. Normally Putnam has seven precincts.
Funeral services for 91 year old Mrs. Julia Hartley were held at St Joseph's Church with Rev Roger D Noonan presiding. Interment followed in the parish cemetery. Pallbearers included Alvin Barry Ivan Barry C F Meredith Lloyd Murphy Ned Potter and Virgil Bo. Ries Mortuary supervised arrangements. Mrs Hartley resided at St Joseph Home and had been a hospital patient four days. She was born December 28 1873 in Henry daughter of Nicholas and Elizabeth Klein. She married William Hartley November 27 1897 in Henry. he died in 1951. Survivors include daughter Mrs Nah Imel Schafer of Henry patron Gordon Hartley of Henry John Hartley of Camp Grove one granddaughter two sisters and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial services for Mrs Gertrude Potter Helfarth of Phoenix Ariz who died February 15 1964 in Desert Terrace Nursing Home will be held at 2 p m Saturday at St Johns Episcopal Church with the Rev Howard Brammitt officiating Burial will be in Henry Cemetery Ries Mortuary in charge There will be no visitation Born October 23 1876 in Henry she was a Potter and House descendant a Henry High School graduate 1895 longtime St Johns member and former organist She married Carl F Hallfarth in 1910 later ran a jewelry store in Henry now Shanks Jewelers She moved to Arizona in 1918 resided in Phoenix since 1932 Her survivors include sister Miss Sarah Elsie Potter of Phoenix two nephews Igned Potter Jr of Tucson and Ned Potter of Henry two nieces Mrs John Bailey Mary Potter of Princeton and Mrs Helen Potter Johnson of Henry several grand nieces and nephews One brother Fred W Potter Sr preceded her in death.
Dr John H Wagner longtime Henry dentist and former mayor died unexpectedly May 9 in his offices in Henry Funeral services were at Green Funeral Home with Rev Howard Brummutt officiating He was born July 15 1897 in Princeton and married Marjorie Duke He leaves two sons Dr William Wagner and Dr John Wagner and six grandchildren.
A cold front and gusty showers across Marshall Putnam counties delayed corn planting on Tuesday. Rain varied from mist to drizzle overnight, with black silt deposits reported on Route 17 and high winds stripping topsoil, while temps ranged from 49 to 78 degrees in Henry.
All drivers are urged to be especially alert when the school band is marching. Do not attempt to pass students without giving warning and time for the band to move safely out of the way in orderly formation.
Lloyd Hunter, a Henry resident and former lumber businessman from LaSalle and Tolono, died Monday after a hospital stay. Services were held today at 2 p.m. at Green Funeral Home with Rev A C Journey officiating. He is survived by his wife Lilian, a daughter Jean Selby, a son John Hunter, six grandchildren, and siblings Alden Hunter and Mrs William Ong, with burial in Henry.
Local neighbors and friends plowed and harrowed 50 acres near Whitefield corners for Joe Pairan who is recovering from severe burns from a Henry plant air explosion months ago. The event included multiple farmers using three to six bottom plows and attracted a large showing of volunteers and area residents.
Henry city council approves Eddy Simmons's six month roller rink permit for the old grade school on Read Brothers property. The plan aims for four weeknights and Sunday sessions with curfew compliance and skate rental on site. Simmons pledges cooperation and police support as residents assess noise and safety.
George Hathway, president of Central Illinois Light Company, will speak at the Henry Chamber of Commerce annual meeting set for Thursday night June 18. The event will be held at the newly opened Henry Harbow restaurant, debuting earlier this week.
