A county survey committee reports consideration of consolidating Toluca and Saratoga districts with a nearby high school in a public meeting. The plan aims to unite the east side of Mar county with Saratoga and others, pending voter approval and district organization.
Reverend Walter Ward formerly pastor of Henry and Sparland Methodist Churches and his wife have moved to Chillicothe, settling there over a week ago. The couple, well known in Henry and Bettis Passonage area, were seeking a home in Lacon before choosing Chillicothe for health reasons and church ties with the Methodist Church of Chillicothe.
The Henry PTA will hold its regular monthly meeting on Wednesday evening May 19 in the Henry gymnasium. Officers will be seated, program plans for next year discussed, and a fine program featuring Mrs. Blocher and her tonette band, the grade school band, and the high school band planned.
Harold Orville Barnes of Sterling dies at home from a heart ailment after a truck incident at work with Northwestern Steel and Wire. Funeral services were held May 12 at Sterling for the husband of Grace Hicks and father of four, with extended family attending Riverside Cemetery.
Fr. Grayoria assistant rector of St. Paul’s Church Peoria will speak on the work of missionaries in the Philippine Islands. The talk is scheduled for next Wednesday evening at 7 in the Edward Street hall and is open to the public, both men and women.
Henry Community Consolidated Grade School board hires C. W. Foulon, former Washburn principal, as new Henry principal for the coming school year. He holds a master's in education from the University of Illinois, taught at Arcola and Washburn, and served in the U. S. Navy last year. He and his family will move to Henry and begin duties in September.
Edna Marie Armbruster 19 year old daughter of Edward and Nellie Armbruster of Lacon died May 6 1948 at St Margaret s Hospital Spring Valley after illness since May 4 She was born May 20 1928 in Hopewell Township and attended Varna Township High School Northwestern Beauty Academy and worked at Caterpillar Tract or Co in Peoria She was one of eight children and survived by parents and siblings Funeral services were held at Immaculate Conception Church Lacon with Rev Father Richard O Loughlin officiating Interment was in the Catholic cemetery at Lacon Brennan Funeral Home Henry in charge of arrangements
The Henry Consolidated Grade School graduation will be held Thursday May 20 at 8 p.m. D T. at the Henry-Seracinvine eyashy. Diploma receivers include Jacqueline Bailey Nancy Bidwell Joe Clift Jack DeWalt Jerry Dysart Peggy Finfgeld Bobby Hurd Charles Johnston Clara Jean Kirby Donald Maddox Eleanor Morse Sue Pierson Eleanor Ries Fred Schneider Robert Searle Thomas Smith and Marshall Stoner. Two Saratoga Township students taught by Mrs Edna Newman Shirley Jean Stotler and Audrey Jean Ely will also receive diplomas. The ceremony includes memory gems and Preamble recitation as part of a church service with individual musical and recitation numbers. E E Liljequist is principal and John Morgensen will present diplomas with C W Swanson the county superintendent as speaker.
A preliminary Army Engineers report recommends replacing the Illinois and Mississippi Canal with a new 99.759 million project for Hennepin. The plan includes a 64 mile canal from Bureau Illinois to Hampton Illinois with seven locks, 38 bridges, and reconstruction of the feeder canal and Sterling dam to serve main waterway traffic.
Plans are underway to open a kindergarten this fall with Mrs. Robert McBride and Mrs. James Henderson collaborating on the project. McBride holds a BS in Education from Illinois State Normal University and Henderson brings six years of elementary experience. Classes run 9 to 11 30 a m five days weekly, with both teachers available for conferences with interested mothers.
Marshall County library board discussed forming a Marshall County library unit with Joe Langston district librarian detailing effects on Henry’s library and countywide benefits. The meeting elected Mrs. Robert Ingels secretary treasurer and heard a report of over 10 000 books loaned and a $63 cash balance. New shelving and memorial funds from Stephen Clare Brown and his wife Ethel Claybourne Brown were noted as ongoing efforts.
The Ottawa deanery of the National Council of Catholic Women will hold a Sunday meeting in Arlington. Benediction at St Patrick's Church at 1 30 p m followed by a 2 o'clock meeting in the church hall. Ladies of St Marys and St Josephs churches Henry will attend.
Mary Miller, a sophomore at Henry High School in Macomb, earned second place in the state music contest. The event highlighted competitive performances by students across the state.
Henry merchants last week organized a shopping event attracting customers from within and outside the city. They stayed open later than usual to serve patrons and offered merchandise at reasonable prices, boosting business and drawing shoppers from distant territories.
Two Illinois counties Woodford Putnam and Marshall led a large GOP gathering in the state armory Springfield. Over six thousand attendees from Rockford to Cairo represented counties with Cook County sending more than two thousand including a sizable Negro group. Delegates praised Governor Dwight H Green for financial stewardship and World War II bonuses while noting tax reductions and education funding.
Mary Ries of Lacon has earned valedictorian honors for Varna Township High School's 41948 graduating class. She carries a 4.12 average over four years and led school life in band chorus music festivals dramatics and the school newspaper Varna Hi Spots serving this year as editor. She completed a commercial training course in high school.
Donald Schwanke son of Mr and Mrs Walter Schwanke Varna receives salutatory honors for the 1948 Varna Township High School graduating class. He carries a 4.01 average after four years and has varsity letters in basketball and baseball. He has led in band chorus plays class leadership and student government while active in 4-H and church youth groups. He plans a future in agriculture or college study.
Governor Green acknowledged the effort to back him as a presidential candidate but pledged to stay out of the campaign due to his role as national party chair. He urged no premature commitments by the Illinois delegation before Philadelphia. Delegates at large include Sen. C Wayland Brooks Col. Robert McCormick and James S Kemper.
Marshall County plans work on the Broaddust farm east of Lacon to create the new public airport. The land was purchased by the county a year ago with state matching funds planned for grading drainage fencing and seeding. A Chicago trip with Governor Dwight Green secured state support and outlined timing for contracts in the near future.
Farm Adviser Paul Laffey announces Marshall Putnam Farm Bureau clean-up week May 17 through May 22. Farmers urged to tidy farms, dispose manure from buildings, and spray with DDT in early June to combat disease-carrying flies while fertilizing fields.
L. F. Klein of Henry, newly elected chairman of the Marshall County Republican Central Committee, called a Thursday night meeting at the courthouse in Lacon. He pledged to recognize all members, run business by majority rule, and aim for 100 percent cooperation as the committee plans its future course.
