Fred LeRoy Kuhl 55, a Putnam County farmer from Magnolia, died after a surgery and lengthy illness. Funeral services were held at Magnolia Community Methodist Church with interment in Henry Cemetery. Survivors include wife Mary Darlene and three children Robert John and Shirley, plus four sisters and six brothers.
Funeral services for Mrs. John Morse 84 of Henry were held May 8 at St. John's Episcopal Church Henry with graveside rites in Henry Cemetery. She taught in rural schools before marriage to John L. Morse in 1903. four sons, three daughters survive along with 20 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren and many relatives. The Green Funeral Home cared for arrangements.
After Jones & Laughlin Steel announced plans for a large Hennepin manufacturing center, rumors swirled of high farm prices, new bank, daily newspaper, and even a second post office. Herbert Johnson of the firm cautions that plans will take time, while Henry and nearby towns push zoning and growth measures.
Friends and neighbors of the Darrell Elys family, who lost all possessions in the Henry area tornado on April 24, invite the public to an open house and miscellaneous shower at St. Mary’s school hall on Sunday May 16 from 1 to 4 p.m.
Henry grade school board met Monday May 10 approving the hire of David Drake for junior high science and accepting a resignation from speech correctionist Mrs Gerald Hemstreet. Bids on bus garage drive improvements and blacktopping were tabled. Magnolia Nursery won a bid for 64 sugar maple trees. Purchases authorized include an electric duplicator a cafeteria table a convection oven and a power mower. Next meeting set for June 7.
The annual Henry Grade School awards night will be held Thursday evening May 13 at 7 30 p m Pupils in athletics music art literary spelling and essay events will receive awards. Awards will be presented by various faculty members and sponsoring organization members. An eighth grade history project display will be open to the public.
The annual spring district meet ing of the American Red Cross blood program for the Peoria Region will be held in Toulon Stark county on Thursday May 20. A luncheon will be served at noon in the Shackceterta restaurant. Attendees include Mrs Robert V Dewey and Mrs William Koehler of Henry and Miss Eleanor Russell of Lacon from the Marshall county chapter.
Mayor Joseph Magelli presided as the Henry council met in the municipal building Monday night with all aldermen present. The meeting approved the treasurer’s April 30 balances and announced Newman as general public works superintendent with Hastings as assistant. Salaries were raised for Newman from 400 to 450 dollars monthly and other staff increases were approved, including the assistant city clerk and police personnel. A history marker for the boat harbor site was discussed for possible placement with city approval.
The Henry Illinois community notes Rev. Hubert Lytle will move to Springfield on June 1 1965 to become associate pastor of the First Methodist Church at Fifth Street and Capital Avenue, with Dr Joseph Albrecht as pastor. Lytle will lead membership and preach monthly. his wife will resign teaching duties in Henry.
A Sunday service at St Marys Church Bogner featured May 9 with participants Regina Flinner Debra Reichen Peggy Neuhalsen David Simmons and Eugene Damm. Top row includes Jim Betterman Scott Simmons Rev Laurence Schumacher Pat Chambers Joe Sendelbach and Shawn Piers.
The council approves 1980 45 for Williams street harbor road work funded from harbor income and notes 1120 51 revenue last year from the Wallace Oil harbor lease. A Memorial Day pool opening is planned with Phil Brown as manager at 75 per week, and Rose to remain police committee chair. Discussion includes tavern license applications and nuisance petitions.
