Superintendent Swanson announced a series of petitions seeking to form a LaRose Lacon unified school system. He sets May 28 as the date to address the 30 day requirement and to begin terms, with elections to follow as legal proceedings proceed and district residents debate independence.
Walter Guderjan and the Varma High team celebrate as the High Wheelved notice reveals the Cartlanhip Award winners at MacEire Jacksonville. The Our Year Scholarship Merjan recognizes competitive excellence among students and teams.
Miss Lois Lenz daughter of Mr and Mrs Ernest Lenz of Varna won an organ scholarship at Illinois Wesleyan University School of Music. She is junior organist at St Pauls Lutheran Varna and a high school senior entering Wesleyan this fall to major in organ. Her instructor is Rev C A Mennicke a colleague of the American Guild of Organists.
Ford Attends State School on Conservation in Lake Villa for intensive two weeks with 47 new conservation officers. The training covered law enforcement and fish and game propagation. notable attendees included Leonard Schmvartz director and Paul Dunn informational representative. The lakes development program was defeated in the Legislature and no work will proceed after July 1 1949.
The Illinois Attorney General and State Liquor Control Commission announce a new ruling denying tavern license renewals for on premises gambling. The decision reverses prior opinions and directs sheriffs and prosecutors to report gambling. The commission will use full powers to revoke licenses of offending operators.
George Koehler was elected president of a newly formed Henry business group aimed at promoting the city as a business center and advancing local firm interests. Frank Halaglere named vice president and Mrs. J. T. Dauber secretary with Dayne F. Farr as treasurer.
Robert Morse of Senachwine High received a National Scholastic Writing Award certificate of merit for his historical article Historical Background of the Red Man. His regional entry, based on George Wheeler farm data from Putnam and an interview, earned honorable mention and eligibility for the national contest in New York. The project was done in English classes under Margaret Anne Stipp with participation from over 100,000 students nationwide in 19 senior and 4 junior divisions.
Unseasonably warm days followed by extreme heat and a late cold snap left farmers short of rain. While oats seedings and corn ground prep progressed, growth lags in oats and pastures due to moisture scarcity. Planting, begun in several fields, continued as farmers awaited a favorable starting date and river conditions to improve soil moisture.

Nicholas Konrad a longtime Henry resident died May 7 at St Margaret's Hospital Spring Valley after a brief illness Born August 10 1876 in Spring Valley he was son of John and Elizabeth Konrad brother of Joseph Konrad of Henry Survived by three children a nephew and several relatives He tended navigation lights on the Illinois and Alexy river worked in river lands was a woodsman and naturalist known for dispensing herbs Funeral held at St Marys Church Green Funeral Home Monday at 2 p.m with interment in Calvary Cemetery Pallbearers named William McKenzie Nort Brown William Merlan V 2B Child Harold Friday and Elmer Neuhalfen
Senachwine Alumni officers and committee chairs met at Francis Murphy home in Putnam on Monday night May 10. President Wayne Winship resigned and Mrs Jim Hageman was elected to fill the vacancy. The annual banquet date was set for May 28 at Putnam Town Hall. Officers present were Vice President May Condit Secretary Mrs Clarence Kelley Treasurer Benjamin Eckard. table chair Margaret Annee Program chair Elsie Whierry. The next meeting is Thursday night May 12 at the Francis Murphy home.
The first week of May 1949 brought hot summer weather with thermometers registering as high as 93 degrees.

In a county wide election held Saturday the majority supported a county library unit for Marshall County. Wenona Lacon and Henry cities voted to exclude their own libraries. The vote was 247 for 31 against with precincts showing varied support. A board will be appointed to decide headquarters and a Springfield representative will be in Marshall County Monday to finalize arrangements.
The Lacon Alumni Association canceled its annual banquet and dance due to scheduling difficulties after the date was set. No alternative date was available, making this year the final event for the senior class as the district moves to Varna.
George Price, 74, retired farmer from Milo, died Tuesday at home. Funeral services are set for Thursday afternoon at Bradford Church with Rev. Donald Wood officiating. Burial will be in Toulon Cemetery. Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Divelbiss and Mrs. Anna Divelbiss along with guests Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Stewart of Hollywood, California, had dinner Tuesday with Mrs. Laura Divelbiss and Pearl.
A class of sixteen children eight boys eight girls received their first Holy Communion at St Marys Church Sunday May 8 at the 8 oclock mass. They were instructed and presented by the Sisters of St Marys School and shown with Father Laurence Schumacher pastor of St Marys in the photo.
Graveside military burial for First Lieutenant C Henry Downey killed in action February 22 1944 over Hamelin Germany was held at 3 pm May 7 at Putnam cemetery. The American Legion Post 1044 of Henry assisted by Rev Donald Lemkau and pallbearers six first cousins ex service men. Remains were accompanied from Chicago by Lt Lloyd Blanchard. Downey born February 24 1919 near Putnam was the son of Mr and Mrs William Downey and served since February 21 1941 in the quartermaster corps and later joined the air corps with the Eighth Air Force in England. Surviving are his parents two sisters Louise and Irene and one brother James.
In appreciation for the sympathy and aid given by relatives friends neighbors the American Legion and all others who helped them in their sorrow Mr and Mrs William Downey and Family thank you for your kindness.
George Daniels 78 of Chicago died May 11 at Woodstock Hospital after several months illness. Funeral services will be Friday at 2 pm at the Funeral Home with Fr Laurence Schumacher officiating. Burial at Calvary Cemetery. He leaves two sons Harold of McHenry and Edwin of Chicago, six grandchildren and other relatives. An obituary will be in the next issue.
Invitations are circulating for the 591th Henry Seenadhwine Alumni banquet to be held at the Henry gymnasium May 30. Serving begins at 6:00 p.m. CST. Alumni needing an invitation should contact secretary Miss Joan Bauter. all members are invited.
Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Aukland of Wenona traveled by train on Friday, May 6, to visit their son Leslie and family in Wichita Kansas, visiting Mrs. Aukland's sisters and other relatives there. After a two week stay they plan to tour Shickley Nebraska to see Ed Ketchum and family, Ed Ketchum being Mrs. Aukland’s sister. The Ketchums have lived in Nebraska since their marriage 50 years ago. The Auklands could not attend the Ketchums' golden wedding anniversary earlier this year due to Mr. Aukland’s illness.
The Magnolia-Swaney High School wins use of the old Swaney grade school building for agriculture and home economics with upgrades for 125 students. Henry city council raises water rates 26 cents monthly to fund a $60,000 waterworks expansion, outlining bond sale details and new connection charges.
Bertha Dean born near Lacon March 28, 1872 married Arthur Dean February 25, 1898. Survived by husband and children Marvin Utica Lorene Fenwick Carroll Gaylord. seven grandchildren. siblings Lizzie Kelley Mary Van Meter William Dagner. Died May 5 at Rest Home Rutland after seven weeks illness. Funeral at Magnolia Methodist Church with Rev Nothdurft. burial Magnolia Cemetery.
St. Mary's Parish launched a funding drive to build a memorial parish hall in honor of Father Schauer. Early pledges are promising, and remaining parishioners are asked to pledge by Sunday. Plans include designated volunteers contacting nonrespondents to request proportionate contributions.
The Hank's roller skating rink formally opened Saturday at the Marshall Putnam Fair Grounds. A sizable crowd attended despite unseasonable weather. To serve schoolchildren, the rink will operate 4:00 to 5:15 each afternoon, with other hours unchanged: 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., 7:30 to 10:00 p.m., and 10:00 to 10:30 for private parties. Louis Hank is proprietor and manager.
Greg Owens of Bradford has been employed by Camp Grove State Bank to fill the vacancy created by the death of Emmett Hickey. Owens has 18 months banking experience and has worked in insurance. He is the son of Dan Owens and will continue living in Bradford while commuting to Camp Grove.
