Sparland resident Wilder Brown, 48, died at Henry hospital after a coal wagon accident in Sparland. A coroner's jury ruled the death accidental after witnesses described Brown falling from the wagon as the team jerked on pavement.

They call for a one half reduction in current year taxes and a fifty percent cut in city road and school costs, with officials urged to provide services gratis during the downturn. Lacon topped the Marshall county grade school literary and musical contest with 18 points, winning three firsts and a second. Washburn finished second with 12 points. Winners include Mabel Ann Thompson and Edward Jacobs in piano, Gene Swanson in boys vocal, Marjorie Wiley in girls vocal, and Lacon taking chorus. Judges were Ramona Beard and Clyde Lyon of EurekaCollege. The event, held at Lacon city hall and Lacon school, concluded in one evening.

The Washington Bicentennial celebration committee for Marshall and Putnam counties met at the courthouse in Lacon on Tuesday evening in a joint session with the Marshall Putnam Fair association. Prizes of 25 15 and 10 were voted for the best Washington life event float to open the fair. Each township is asked to present floats with a program committee listed. Farm Board Plans 90-Day Flour Supply for Marshall County
A Marshall County poor farm board meeting in Lacon set up township lists of needy families to receive flour from the National Red Cross. About 225 sacks are sought, drawn from wheat held by the Federal Farm Board. The Red Cross will allocate flour via county organizations to those named by supervisors. Fred C. Toluca Hit By Severe Windstorm Friday Night
A windstorm swept Toluca Friday shortly after 6 pm causing chimney and roof damage, shattered windows, and debris across the city. The Toluca Star-Herald office suffered a chimney collapse, Hunter-Allen Lumber sheds were unroofed, and the Santa Fe station and post office also sustained damage. Illinois university scholarship exam set for June 4
The University of Illinois will hold its annual competitive scholarship examination for high school graduates on Saturday June 4 in Lacon at the office of County Supt. O T Stateler. The top county scorer with an average of 70 or higher earns a four year scholarship covering most fees. Morning and afternoon sessions include English composition rhetoric algebra geometry in the morning and grouped subjects in history language and science in the afternoon. The winner must meet entrance requirements and enroll next September.

Judge Daily Adjourns January Term of Court in Lacon
The final session of the January term was held at the Lacon courthouse. A sealed verdict found Chris Glant not guilty of charges related to farm loan notes after six hours of deliberation. Judge Daily adjourned the term with several orders and scheduled the May term to begin May 28.
