Clinton district selects Edward Keen as superintendent

The Putnam Community Unit 535 names Dr. Edward W Keen 43 as superintendent of schools. Keen previously led the nine south district at Clinton and is described as aligning with state education leadership while joining a team from Kilinois State.

Local School District Appoints New Administrator in Centerville Building

Whool district in Superior Wisconsin assigns a new administrator to oversee nine centers with 115 teachers and 55 non certified staff. The incoming leader, a Lake Forest College graduate with an education doctorate, formerly served at West Pike High School and Williamsville High School, assuming duties July 11 1963. He envisions expanding programs as the district consolidates operations in a new Centerville building and anticipates future growth in pupil numbers.

Henry Junior Woman's Club to March for MS Hope Chest

Henry area members and friends march on May 17 under direction of Mrs. Larry Lord Mrs. Mark Tawney and Mrs. John Stroope for the Multiple Sclerosis Hope Chest drive. The group lists many marchers with more to be announced next week. funds support MS research and local patient services with a goal above last year’s near 500 dollars.

Magnolia-Swaney High names valedictorian and salutatorian

Daniel Carl Peterson is valedictorian with a 4.92 GPA at Magnolia-Swaney High School. William Carl Nielsen is salutatorian with a 4.85 GPA. Peterson held multiple leadership roles and honors, plans accounting, and received scholarships. Nielsen transferred from Tonica High School, held student leadership posts, and earned senior class president and National Honor Society offices.

Holgar Brask 85 a Lacan resident died Saturday at Methodist hospital Peoria from a self inflicted gunshot He had suffered strokes and illness recently He was born in Denmark and immigrated to the United States in 1907 He operated the Lacon Bottling Works and was a 50 year Mason He is survived by his wife a daughter and four grandchildren Funeral services were held at Lenz Memorial Home and burial followed in Lacon Catholic cemetery Coroner held an inquest next day

Henry-Senachwine Students Stage Talent Show Fundraiser

Flora and Hex Girls join Henry-Senachwine High School for a Friday May 20 talent show at 8 p.m. to raise 750 dollars for the AFS student project. Student volunteers will canvas town May 16 to sell tickets. Costa Rica AFS student Flora Duran leads a group singing Spanish numbers.

Putnam School Board Names New Teacher at Senachwine

James Mowery has been engaged by the Senachwine grade school board to teach fourth, fifth, and sixth grades. He replaces Mrs. Deryl Schertz who will attend ing school next year. Iner Anderson, a candidate for Putnam county superintendent of schools, will not take office until August 1967 if elected and will continue as principal for the 1966 67 school year.

Young Republicans Elect Officers in Marshall County

Officers elected for the coming year at a meeting of Marshall County Young Republicans held at the court house in Lacon Tuesday evening were President Mrs Rita West Lacon vice president William Turnbull Sparland secretary Mrs Jack Johnson Lacon and treasurer Norman Fairbanks Lacon Election year plans were discussed and refreshments served.

Frost Destroys Local Fruit Gardens and Crops

Unseasonably cold weather with lows near 28 and 25 degrees damaged local produce. Early gardens were destroyed and may need replanting. Fruit growers estimate up to 95 percent loss of the apple crop. Corn will also need replanting as heavy rains delay crops.

Children’s Summer Reading Start June 13 at Henry Library

Children in second grade at Henry Grade School visited Henry Public Library with teachers Mrs Don Quimby and Mrs Hollace Rickey. Several returned for new library cards as staff explained the signup steps and the upcoming summer reading program themed “Mary Poppens” set to begin in the second week of June.

Mrs Arvid Magnuson and daughters in law attended a church shower at Tishkilwa given by hostesses for Miss Evelyn Allen of Peoria who will marry Charles Sash of Buda on Sunday afternoon June 19.

Illinois Valley community junior college gains strong region wide vote

Candidate Robert Whitney, Magnolia township farmer and Farm Bureau president, seeks a seat on the new Illinois Valley Community Junior College board. The May 7 election produced lopsided support across urban, rural, and specific districts, with totals showing wide approval in LaSalle Peru High and Putnam counties. First filing for candidates opens May 20 and closes June 10.

Henry Adopts Interim Zoning Ordinance

Henry city council approved an interim zoning ordinance after a public hearing at the Legion building. The plan sets lot, yard, and setback requirements, keeps grain and livestock farming outside the city as permitted uses, and allows variances for nonresidential uses. Planning consultant Thompson Dykes and the commission revised the proposal. long-range planning for Henry and Marshall county begins.

Hennepin Village Board Grants Telephone Franchise with 25 Year Term

The Hennepin village board unanimously approved a telephone service franchise for General Telephone Co at a special meeting led by Trustee Ernest Bassi. The 25 year term replaces the original 50 years and may involve returning the current telephone building to the village if not needed after a dial system conversion. Company reps C H Dunn and Norman Franklin attended. Theodore Boggle was sworn in as a new trustee replacing Robert Judd.
