City leaders and business group officials met to plan financing for park area improvements and street lighting cuts. They debated tax methods, cost sharing with property owners, and a possible referendum with a judge to decide approval.
The Marshall County welfare committee met to oppose House Bill 37 which would let estates of old age recipients be charged to recover state and county funds. Director Francis McEvoy noted $14,670.90 recovered in two years in Marshall County with statewide recovery near $1 million annually. The group discussed exemptions for the first recipient’s estate and earnings exemptions as bills move through Springfield. The meeting also showcased drunkometer and lie detector tests used by the sheriff’s office, with Louis Phillips as the subject in a demonstration.
Owen Construction Company of Washburn, operated by Cliff Owen, has won the Henry contract to rebuild Miller Furniture after a fire. Work began recently and is due to finish in seven weeks, including a second floor, new rafters and roof, and updated wiring. The store will stock new furniture and appliances and reopen after completion. Miller's continues business from an Edward Street annex.
Memorial Day services will be held at Putnam cemetery on Monday May 30 at 10 a.m. Roger Magnuson serves as chairman and will announce the program in a future issue of the Henry News Republican.
Harry J. Shanks announces a meeting of Henry Businessmen’s Association and property owners in business areas at 7 30 pm Friday May 20 at the Knights of Columbus hall on Adaward Street. They will discuss financial plans for proposed street lighting and sidewalk improvements ahead of the city council’s next meeting.
A spring recital at Henry Senachwine high school auditorium featured Muse pupils of Sister Mary Michael of St Marys school. The stage decorations and colored lights created a festive mood as the audience applauded the program. Father Laurence Schumach spoke briefly and a freewill offering will fund St Marys redecorating project.
The Henry fire department reports strong donations from business districts and plans a house to house canvass in residential areas late next week. Tonight a meeting will organize the campaign. Funds will replace outdated equipment and gear to upgrade firefighting weapons.
The Marshall Putnam Health and Tuberculosis association held its annual meeting in Henry in the Farm Bureau building. Mrs Ray Stage of Granville was re elected president with a slate including Mrs W A Schwanke and Alain Konuhler. The report by Mrs Emma Smart covered 1954 55 activities and the 1954 55 TB seal sale totaled 41369 21.

The annual Hennepin athletic banquet honors grade and high school basketball teams. It will be at Deck Memorial gymnasium at 7 p.m. on Monday May 16 with families bringing their own food and table service. coffee and milk will be furnished.
Clement Gill named president of the Camp Grove Sportsmen's Club replacing Pete Dries who retires after long service. New officers include Tom Green secretary Tom Cain vice president Clarence Kelley treasurer with 15 townships in five counties represented among directors and supervisors. A 60 by 84 foot livestock show building is under construction at the Marshall Putnam fairgrounds to shelter the 4 H shows and livestock events.
The Marshall County Department of Public Welfare plans to move from Lacon to Henry. It will lease space in the Dental Arts building from Dr J H Wagner, with monthly rent cut from 110 to 55 dollars. Francis L McEvoy of Henry serves as director and Springfield makes final decisions.
A buyer from Indiana won three LaRose lots including a concrete block garage 44 by 60 feet a modern six room house and a vacant lot for 9500 with 2500 for the extra land. The sale settled the Lloyd G Adams estate with Robert A Barnes of Lacon as attorney in charge. Francis Keegan and son acted as auctioneers and FR and Hazel Bond served as executors.
Henry Sinachwine P T A schedules a May 18 meeting titled Planning for the Future. Preliminary plans for next year will be developed and members asked to suggest topics for tapes. The next year's officers to be installed are President Mira Monier Freeman, Vice President Mrs Russell Glover, Secretary John Sears, Treasurer Mrs Fayne Umphress.
The Illinois state division of highways awarded contracts on May 5 for road building in 19 counties totaling about 1.05 million dollars. This brings the new work under Governor Stratton's 1955 highway program to roughly 31 million dollars.
Miss Lela Gray of Saratoga died Friday morning after a year long heart condition. Services were held Sunday at the Boose funeral home with Rev. Thomas J. Crapp officiating. Interment was in Henry City cemetery. pallbearers were neighbors from the Saratoga community.
The Rev Howard Brummitt attended the annual Synod meeting and Mrs Lee Wright with Miss May Ebaugh attended the Woman s Auxiliary annual meeting of the Episcopal Diocese of Quincy in Moline last week Tuesday and Wednesday.
