A Verla Rediger family home on Floyd Monier’s T. Floyd Monier farm in Whitefield Township burned Friday noon due to a gasoline stove explosion. The rapid blaze destroyed the house and all belongings, including meat cached from four hogs and a calf. no contents were insured. The Redigers and four children sought shelter at Sugar Grove school, aided by neighbors who donated about a hundred dollars and household articles. Mr Monier plans to rebuild. Colonial Fire Underwriters settled the loss four days after the fire through Thos C Waterous.
The Chillicothe Booster Committee seeks a 35 mile highway extension from Minonk to Edelstein and a new Illinois River bridge at Chillicothe. A May 18 meeting with Peoria county officials will coordinate with Senator Madden and highway officials to advance the project. Over 1,100 signatures support the plan.
John Urbanke, a cabinet maker trained in Austria and time in Chicago, has installed a full power driven machine line on East Park Row. He funds walnut lumber from Ferdinand Braun and is producing new chairs, rocking chairs, tables, screens, and repairing furniture. He completed about six upholstered dining chairs selling around 5.75 each.
The Lacon city council raised compensation for the mayor and aldermen last week. The mayor will now be paid 5 dollars per meeting and aldermen 4 dollars per meeting, plus 1.50 dollars for each previously drawn meeting. The council was previously among the lowest paid in the region for a city of its size.
Miss Clara Louis, daughter of Mrs. Henrietta Louis, was a two week end guest in her mother's home. Miss Louis is a teacher of commercial subjects at Streator High School.
Putnam County Library Board met in Hennepin May 1 to appoint custodians for branches Swaney, Putnam, and Magnolia. Other branch appointments pending. Board discussed book changes the week of May 29 and plans to shift tasks to county librarians. Virginia Swanson Jones to meet custodians. study of book mending at Henry Public Library planned. New books listed and noted county involvement with local groups.
The Lundy Memorial Committee plans a summer observance at Frends Cemetery near McNabb honoring Benjamin Lundy a pioneer abolitionist. Dr B Q Dysart is asking Illinois State Senate and House members for financial help with the celebration potentially totaling at least 1000. Senator Lantz and Senator Gunning have pledged cooperation and urged broad contact with legislators.
J W Goleman CCC camp superintendent plans a Henry site at Third and Carroll, buys the former R O Green Funeral Home, awards Bert Hoppler the fire damaged house repairs, aiming for occupancy by June 15. Mr Coleman joins Henry with civil engineering ties, lodge and Commandery memberships.
Granville High School won the Tri County track meet yesterday at the Marshall Putnam Fair Grounds. Other scores listed show Varna Henry Tonica Magnolia Wenona Swaney with varied placements. A full event summary will appear next week in the News-Republican.
Frank Bickerman and Ed Damm report the K of C state convention held in Quincy on Monday and Tuesday May 8 and 9 was the largest of its kind they have attended.
A number of Marshall and Putnam County students earned scholarships and honors at the University of Illinois. Russell K. Stivers of Toluca is among 41 outstanding scholars, his name etched on a bronze tablet in the library. Several local students ranked in the top ten percent, including four from Henry County.
Sparland band director Arthur Blocher announced that Duane Jury and the Sparland cornet trio Georgia Watkins Shirley Brenner Esther Gibbs have won first place at the State band contest in La Salle and will compete in the National Band Contest in Indianapolis May 18. Accompanist Mrs. Rena Green and Blocher will accompany the group by car, marking the first national qualification for Sparland students.
A 15-year-old girl and her 18-year-old brother seek farm homes this summer after their mother died. They have lived with their father in a rundown building and want a real home with proper care. Contact Irene Agnew, Marshall Putnam Child Welfare Supervisor in Henry for placements.
A purebred Guernsey bull two years old was bought Friday by Emil and Barney Goetz of Mt Palatine Putnam County. The bull was purchased from Dr F C Willett of Whitefield and will be used to improve the Goetz herd on their Mt Palatine farm.
Miss Hattie Schultz aged 46 would have been 87 on May 16 died at home on the Lacon road after a heart attack and pneumonia. She was born near Lacon on May 16, 1858, one of six sisters. Funeral from the home Saturday at 2 pm with Rev. Whistler officiating and interment in Lacon Cemetery. She leaves four sisters and several nieces nephews and a foster son. Out-of-town attendees listed from Peru Toluca Peoria Chicago and Cedar Point.
The annual grade school musical program will be held Friday May 10 in the Henry gymnasium at 7 p.m. directed by Mrs. Clifford Mercian. Performances include two folk dances by first and second grades, Flower Magic by mixed third to fifth graders, a chorus of sixth to eighth grade girls, and The Pirate's Umbrella operetta by boys from grades four to seven.
Henry boys of all ages invited to a Friday night meeting at the Potter insurance office to form a local model airplane builders club required to have at least ten members for National Aeronautic Association affiliation. Glen May, Richard Sivell, Jack McKirgan, James Tindall, and Bill Woodfill are among builders.
Sealed bids due by 2 p m Monday May 15 1989 will be opened publicly for a gravel truck with a hydraulic dump body ten ply tires dust wheels and overload springs. A trade in allowance is required for a 1928 International truck owned by Senachwine Township Putnam Illinois. The commission reserves the right to reject any bid.
Henry Theatre management brings the popular Technicolor film The Princess for Sunday matinee and evening showings and again for Monday night. The program is billed as a big treat for Henry movie-goers with the colorful production expected to draw crowds.
A 28 member crew from the Rushville CCC camp arrives in Henry to prepare Riviera Park site for a new CCC camp. They will cut trees, demolish the Riviera Park dance pavilion, and salvage lumber for owner Barney Henry. A second crew maps farms in several watersheds for soil conservation, led by Asher B. Cox with Harold K. Doubet and Joe Kalwledge. Contour farming planned across Putnam and surrounding counties, with maps for the Putnam Watershed and river east side near Lacon and Florida. Officers stay at Henry Hotel. crew quarters at the Henry camp.
Harold Bell Wright 18 and his brother Frank 21 are linked to stealing a 1988 Plymouth from Russell Mallette of Bradford Sunday night in Henry. Harold was arrested. Frank fled after taking clothes. The Mallette car was recovered Monday. deputies followed clues leading to the Wrights. No charges against the girls mentioned.
Henry grocery stores and meat markets will close Thursday afternoons during June July August and the first two weeks of September. They will close at 19 80 for the balance of the day.
Sparland State Bank will close on Thursday afternoons starting June 1 and continue every Thursday afternoon until further notice. H W Stineo, principal of Toluca High School, has resigned and plans for the future are unclear. Emerson Travis, son of Leonard Travis, swerved off Wolf Hollow road when his car hit a culvert, leaving the pavement and tipping into a ditch. a barbed wire fence kept damage down and he was only dazed and uninjured.
