Northwest Christian Church convention opens in Illinois

Delegates representing more than 100 Christian churches in western Illinois arrived for the sixteenth annual Northwest Christian Church and Missionary Society district convention. The program includes morning devotions, reports, and a banquet at Hotel Henry with speakers Clyde Lyon and O T Mattox, as Eureka College leaders perform.

Bible Classes to Meet at La Prairie May 12

The Marshall Putnam Men’s Federated Bible classes announce a May 12 gathering at the U P church near La Prairie Marshall County with Rev John Acheson of Princeton as speaker on Strawberries for Prunes after a 7 pm banquet. Rev A S Bailey leads the program committee and invites all men interested in Bible study to attend.

Lacon Man Operates New Barge Line On Illinois Waterway

Captain Frank Deneen, veteran mariner from Lacon, now runs a two-barge line on the Illinois deep waterway with the Hiawasee as a pusher. He vessels weekly two round trips between Ottawa and Peoria carrying grain in 50 000 bushel barges. Crew includes Foreman Dewey Green night watchman Lorenz cook Lazen and engineer from Beardstown and Havana. Deneen believes the deep waterway will boost Illinois valley commerce.

Henry High Athletes Dominate Lostant Track Meet

Henry High School won the Lostant track meet despite muddy conditions led by Ray Hunt winning three sprints and hurdles with 20 points. Quinney Swaney and Massie starred for Swaney. Henry's Leo Smith and Martin added strong showings as Henry's 47 1/3 point tally topped Swaney and Lostant. The squad travels to La Salle on Saturday May 13 for district competition aiming for state in Champaign.

Illinois Bass Season Opens June 15 Across Zones

The statewide fishing calendar lists the north central zone black bass season from June 15 to February 29 and the southern zone from June 1 to February 29. Other species such as crappie yellow perch sunfish goggle eyes bluegills buffalo bullhead cat carp catfish and white perch have year round openings with a closed period only for series dating June 2 to April 14.

Valentine Bogner born January 28 1861 at Kickapoo Illinois died May 6 1933 at Henry hospital aged 72 years 8 months 8 days after ruptured appendix operation. Supreme Court strikes down State sales tax in Illinois

The Illinois 3 percent sales tax is ruled unconstitutional by the state Supreme Court. Justices rule two clauses discriminatory and in conflict with the Illinois constitution. The court orders no collection pending rehearing options, with refunds sought and possible redraft of a lower rate.

State Senator Vogelsang Dies After Emergency Operation

State Senator Clifford J. Vogelsang of Taylorville Illinois died Monday night May 8 following emergency surgery for acute appendicitis. A former Henry resident and lawyer, Vogelsang moved to Pana then Taylorville, served as Christian County judge, and was elected to the fortieth district senate last fall. He helped pass a bill protecting public officials from liability for funds in closed banks and was active in civic groups. Funeral services were held at the First Methodist Episcopal Church in Taylorville.

Poppy Day set for May 27 in Henry unit

Henry unit of the American Legion Auxiliary announces May 27 as Poppy Day. Volunteers will wear and sell Memorial poppies to honor World War dead and support disabled veterans and their families. Poppy girls will distribute flowers across downtown with proceeds aiding local relief activities.

Eighth Grade Graduation Exercises Set For May 12

Henry Bridge Closed After Barge Hits Pier

A barge laden with steel towed by the William Turnbull struck the Henry Bridge pier, knocking away about a quarter of the structure and closing the bridge to traffic. The tug and cargo continued to Memphis after a safety inquiry was ordered by the War Department. A Springfield delegation visited state highway officials to review the bridge situation.

Protests Reach Conservator Actions at Henry National Bank

Washington dispatches report protests against Adolph Wirtz conservator of the First Henry National Bank. Congressmen Dirksen and Comptroller O Connor received protests over alleged arbitrary handling of bank records and assets. An inquiry order was issued by the Comptroller of the Currency directing James Fidler to investigate, possibly visiting Henry. Wirtz declined further comment, defending his actions.

William Reginald Dies of Heart Attack at 65

William Reginald 65 of Henry died Tuesday morning from a heart attack after being in good health the prior day. Funeral services will be Friday at 3 PM at the Methodist Episcopal church with Rev. J A Johnson officiating. Interment in Henry City cemetery. He leaves a wife and three brothers John Joseph and Charles, all of Henry.

Washouts Halt Mail and Rail Service Here

Train and mail service are at a standstill due to multiple washouts on the Rock Island line. The Mossville bridge was washed out after heavy Peoria area rainfall last night. Emergency crews work on repair, with service expected to resume late today.
