Theodore Smith a prominent farmer near McNabb entered a faulty gas generating pit to repair it and collapsed. Edwin Cox his assistant, and Mrs. Laura Smith with Miss Lyman Godfrey helped in a daring two height rescue. Cox and Smith were revived by neighbors and doctors and remain weak for some time.
A news dispatch says the government may take ownership of corn stored in sealed cribs on August 1 unless prices rise. A 45 cent per bushel advance is in effect as government loans exceed $120 million with banks adding large sums. In Illinois Iowa and Indiana loans total about $47 million and nearly 74 000 notes were negotiated in these states.
The Bureau County board will not act on liquor licenses and will lack a regulatory measure until its June meeting. Attorney General Otto Kerner ruled the $1,000 fee adopted April 11 is illegal, leaving the board without a liquor regulation plan.
A tenant house on the Lawrence Ash farm near McNabb burned Saturday night. The John Lank family were away when flames were discovered and forced to flee, leaving behind personal effects. The owner suspects a cigarette started the blaze smouldering for hours before ignition.
Circuit Judge John M. Niehaus, 79, a prominent Illinois jurist, died at his Peoria home after a heart attack. He had long served in Peoria and surrounding counties, held roles from state legislator to state's attorney, master in chancery, circuit judge, and last appellate judge.
Henry High School Alumni Association members met last Wednesday in the community room to organize plans for the annual banquet and dance set for Tuesday evening May 29. Wayne Child chaired the meeting and committees were named for program, menu, invitations, dance, reception, nominating, and decorations with multiple as listed.
President Roosevelt issued a proclamation calling for observance of Mothers Day on Sunday May 13. He ordered the display of the United States flag on government buildings homes and other suitable places and urged that churches fraternal and welfare groups help mothers and children in need of life’s necessities.
Retail liquor stores in Tskilwa are limited to two with licenses at 360 dollars per year each. Two beer licenses cost 60 dollars annually. Closing hours are 10 on weekdays and 11 on Saturdays. Taverns close all day Sunday and cannot open before six in the morning.
Mrs William Baugh, aged 84, died Friday after a fall and hip fracture. Born Feb 14 1850 in Heathtown England she emigrated with husband William Baugh to Marshall County in 1879. Surviving children include Mrs Frank Gugerty Mrs James Colligan Mrs Anton Schaefer Jr Mrs A F E Ertle and Edward Baugh with six grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Funeral Sunday at St Johns Episcopal Church and burial at Henry City cemetery.
The Henry Greys opened their 1934 baseball season with a 7 to 4 victory over Camp Grove. Pitchers Green and Helper fanned nine each, while the Greys collected 19 hits and struck out many times on air.
Henry officials press ahead to secure a $70 000 paving project funded by 20 500 federal grant under NRA PWA. State share 27 000 to 30 000. city to raise about 20 000 with bonds repaid in ten years. Congressman Dirksen aided. Kinsey prepared technical details for highway work in Springfield. Plans call for 36 foot main pave ment along Western and Third streets with a 44 foot spur on Edwards street. Local leaders pledged ongoing advocacy to start soon.
Three new aldermen sworn in as New City Council organized for the coming year after adjourning the old council. Harry Nilson Edson Abbott and Ralph Brown advance to wards one two and three respectively. Mayor Otto announced committee and official appointments for the year. Police and city attorney listed along with waterworks superintendent and board of health members. Appointments confirmed by the council.
Thousands in the middle western states and Marshall Putnam counties face drought anxieties as the driest April since 1925 leaves precipitation at 1.12 inches, well below normal. Above normal temperatures and late cold snaps have damaged crops and seeds, with gardeners fearing reduced yields across home and farm plots.
A new Gamble Stores agency will open next week in Henry in the Krenz building on Edwards street. Bruce Bauter will manage the store, formerly with Hunter Lumber and News Republican. Expected opening about May 16 with a wide variety of merchandise and auto accessories.
John T. Rose widely known resident of Tonica died Saturday morning at his son's home in Tonica after a brief illness. Born in Germany he moved to Richland township in 1869 then to Iowa in 1888. He returned to Tonica in 1927 to live with his son. Surviving are three sons H C Rose BE H Rose of Tonica and John Rose of Los Angeles. two daughters Mrs Ohldenberg Phillips Kansas and Mrs William Lente Kansas City. ten grandchildren. His body was taken to Atlantic Iowa for burial with funeral held Wednesday.
Gov Henry Horner signed the Sieberns bill on Saturday to simplify inheritance tax payments by allowing county treasurers to withhold 3750 from each payment until administrative costs are paid.
Mr and Mrs Charles Heininger of Putnam announce the birth of a baby girl born on Sunday May 6 The newborn weighed 544 pounds at birth and joins the family with joyous news from Putnam County
Merritt Onyun a 17 year old Henry High School junior died after a car he rode in overturned while attempting to pass another vehicle on Route 29 north of Henry. Lyman Hunt 11 sustained multiple injuries and was hospitalized at home. Coroner ruled accidental death. Services held at Presbyterian church with large crowd and flowers.
Obituary note from the Kewanee Star Courier recalls Miss Amanda Jane Camery born March 30 1854 Bureau County. She died Tuesday at the Public Hospital Kewanee where she lived with her brother Harvey. Funeral Thursday 1 30 pm at Cavanagh and Schuenemann mortuary burial Sugar Grove Cemetery Henry. Survivors include sisters Laura Edwards and Nora Camery and brothers Harvey and Fred Camery. She was a member of the M E church.
Miss Ellen Mae Downey daughter of Mr and Mrs Elmer Downey Putnam and Clyde Britton of Henry united in marriage Saturday April 21 at the Methodist church parsonage in Hennepin. Rev Albert Obrecht performed the ceremony. The bride a Putnam native graduated from Senachwine High School in 1930 and has lived with her parents. The groom formerly Indiana native now residing in Henry near the Illinois site has worked on the new bridge construction with Powers Thompson. The couple will reside in Henry for now.
