Joann Clarence named salutatorian with a 3.81 average and active in band glee club Student Council Future Homemakers of America yearbook staff and sousaphone contest participation.
Michael Fahy of Toluca, chair of the Marshall County chapter of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis, announced a major expansion of polio research funding. A $200,000 March of Dimes grant via the research council will support fellowships for virology neurology and epidemiology, with up to 6000 dollars per fellow annually and laboratory expenses up to 1000 dollars.
Forrest and Owens win civil service posts to run mail routes in Henry City beginning July 1 1947. Forrest assigned to route one and Owens to route two plus parcel post duties, with Washington approval expected. Francis McEvoy chose welfare work over a local post office posting. Free city delivery preparations advance as Hentz and Hoppler install street markers and boxes while residents prepare house numbers.
Ten Henry area schools favor consolidation after a well attended Tuesday meeting. Attendees heard that two boards would disappear and a new district would form if the vote passes. Petitions require 200 signatures with May 13 notices and polls set for 12 to 7 p.m. CDT at city hall Union School Whitefield Town Hall and Hoffman School.
Donna Stotler 23 wife of Robert Stotler formerly of Saratoga died in Olney Illinois hospital after December illness from injuries suffered in a 1943 automobile crash. The Stotlers married in California while both workers in a shipyard and later lived with Harold Shearer before moving to Nobles Coogan home in Noble. Funeral plans incomplete. A note on traffic fatalities follows urging safe driving.
Rutland physician S G Peterson 72 longtime central Illinois figure died at 2 10 am Monday at his home. He had battled ill health since April. Survivors include two stepchildren two brothers and his wife Anna Murphy preceded him in death. Peterson built a large Rutland practice, served on the village board and school board, and was linked with St Marys hospital in Streator. Funeral services were held Wednesday at Tallyn funeral home Minank with burial at Rutland.
Mrs Catherine Reavy 99 died May 3 at her daughter Mary Fulrath’s home in Waukesha Wis. She observed her 99th birthday April 18 and was the oldest of seven children of Peter and Frances Mattemavas born in Henry. Funeral at St Patrick’s Hennepin with burial beside husband. Attendees included children George Joliet Edward Moline Louis LaSalle John Hennepin and others from nearby towns.
Frank Drvid Marshall son of Roy and Della Newton Marshall was born February 2 1893 in La Salle Illinois. He lived in La Salle and Chicago where he married Ernestine Bennett and worked 23 years as a foreman with the American District Telegraph Company. He died April 20 1947 after surgery in 1946 survived by his wife two daughters four grandchildren and a brother. Funeral services were at Shields Funeral Home Oglesby and St Marys Church Henry with interment Calvary Cemetery.
Harold B. Jury of Washburn has been named chairman of the Woodford County Board of Supervisors in a regional leadership update.
Henry Fire Department hosts a corn festival at Henry High School gym tonight at 8 30. Admission is 1 dollar with 20 free games, then five cents per game. Prizes range from 5 to 20 dollars with 500 to 1000 dollars in prizes donated by local business people. Proceeds fund new Henry Fire Department equipment.
Sparland juniors and seniors travel to Chicago by chartered bus with sponsors Miss Stateler and Mr Dunn and guest Mrs Dunn. They visit Museum of Science and Industry, Harrison Hotel, Merchandise Mart, WMAQ Studio, Art Institute, Historical Society, Blackstone Theater, Oriental Institute, Field Museum, Aquarium, and staged shows. The trip ends with a late arrival home praising the experience.
Farmers crowded the streets to work amid rain and late spring delays. Oats were planted under tough conditions and most fields were not later worked. With modern tractors and long hours, crews plan to catch up, using night shifts to cover more ground than in past horse era days.
The Henry Memorial Post No. 8943 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars will meet at their hall on Friday night May 9 for the next regular session. The post has installed two tables a billiards and a pool with George Nichols Darrell Prather and Charles Bowars recovering them. New equipment for the tables arrived Thursday. Commander Ed Brennan of the American Legion says the VFW may stay at their current location and may obtain a license if they wish.
Marshall County Sheriff Park L. McAllister faced a chaotic night as 18 year old Lawrence Diller from Benton Harbor Michigan was jailed on vagrancy in Henry and found with a card bearing the name and address of missing Wisconsin girl Georgia Jean Weckler. While initial suspicions linked Diller to the Fort Atkinson kidnapping, investigators soon ruled the lead out. Diller said he copied the name from a newspaper to aid the hunt. Police in Chicago Milwaukee Peoria and elsewhere pressed the sheriff by phone as reporters chased a possible suspect, eventually leaving him exhausted for an early trip to Vandalia to escort a prisoner.
William Van DeVeer was elected president of the Peoria district Methodist Youth Fellowship at the annual convention in Delavan on May 4. He also became a delegate to the National Methodist Rural Life Conference at Lincoln Nebraska July 29 to 31. Attendees from Henry included Janice Mercian Marilyn Morse and Marjorie Morse William Van DeVeer and Rev Donald Lemkau. The Peoria district includes about one hundred Methodist churches. Other officers elected were vice president Donna Lou Thompson Kewanee secretary Pat Birkett of Washington IL and treasurer Charles Crasen of News Nab.
County health nurse Mrs. Emma Smart used a lamp supplied by the State to screen pupils at St. Mary's Parochial School and Henry Grade School for scalp ringworm. A few scattered cases were found in lower grades and among absent students. Prior cases respond well to treatment and spread is thought under control.
The Henry Methodist Church men's choir will sing during Sunday services on May 11. Director Mrs Charles Pagemiller organist Mrs Charles Bourdette and trumpeters Albert Cronkrite and Richard Forney lead the group. Members include Paul Crabbs E E Liljequist Charles Bourdette Charles Holmes Roy Steele and others. A Tuesday night rehearsal was followed by a social hour and refreshments.
Marshall County Airport Commission chairman Paul Grives of Lacon and members Clark Harter of Venona and Harold Bullington of Henry traveled Tuesday to Champaign on county airport land purchase discussions for the project near Lacon.
The new Henry City Council convened at city hall Monday. Alderman Ed Wiedman succeeded Allen Berry in Ward 1, taking office with no opposition. Re-elected Aldermen Bert Hoppler and Emeil Nilson were sworn in. Committees were named, bonuses approved for Water Superintendent C L Applegate, and roles for City Clerk, Engineer, and Police Chief confirmed. Preparations for free mail delivery come July and street work continue as posts and numbers are assigned.
The American Legion Henry Post No. 323 will offer the Van DeVeer building on Second Street for sale after relocating to the new home next to the post office. Ed Brennan, commander, says disposition method will be announced soon. Financing the new building purchase will be bond funded by Legion members.
The Community Organization of Girl Scouts in Henry collected 114.19 in donations to fund materials training for leaders and related activities. Contributors include Mrs. Albert Kapraun and Mrs. Rankin Johnston who sought businessmen and Mrs. Julius Hscheldt Mrs. Kenneth Chance and Mrs. Eugene Kirby who contacted patients and friends.
