A fragmented report outlines city council concerns over municipal finances. Officials warn that tax burdens remain low but the city must stay in the black, with talks on receivership and contingency plans for future budgets.
Henry city council chair Lawrence Newman announces William Forrest as pool manager and Marshall Stoner as lifeguard and instructor. The pool opens on Decoration Day for June to August with family 15 dollar, individual monthly 4 dollar, individual season 7 dollar, adult 4 50, under 12 children rates. The new chlorination keeps water fresh and daily operation steady after modernization.
At a family pot luck gathering in the Pouch Methodist Church, Henry and Saratoga circuits held the fourth quarterly conference. Dr. Claude M. Temple urged prayers at home and praised church reports, approving a one-year renewal for Pastor Bennett with a salary raise. Bennett and his wife thanked congregations for four years of service and Mrs Bennett's illness support.
Dick Bradley known as the talkin tail or of Peoria will speak at St. Mary's Communion breakfast on Sunday May 17 after the 8 o clock mass. He will entertain fathers sons and invited guests with his local adapted humor. Masses May 17 begin at 6 and 8 4m to accommodate workers.
Obituary notices honor Cecilia Clare Kearney Hennessey wife of T E Hennessey who died suddenly at home April 29 at age 67. Services held at St Josephs Church with Rev H B Causey officiating. Interment in St Patrick's cemetery. Family, friends, and many from Peoria Henry Bradford and Chicago attended.
Ray Saltzman retired April 28 1953 from his Varna Illinois station agent job for the G M O railway after four decades of service. He began in 1910 in Hopedale worked long hours for low pay, later moving to Varna in 1913 and marrying Irma Hurt in 1934. The Saltzmans plan a western tour driving to the Pacific Northwest Bryce and Zion parks and a return to Hackensack Minnesota for a summer home before autumn duck hunting season.
Arthur Blocher resigns as band instructor effective year end. He came to Henry in 1938 and declined a new contract. He taught at Malden West Bureau Sparland and Henry and plans one more day at West Bureau next year.
Frances Noder, daughter of Mr and Mrs Michael Noder, Mec Nabb, joins 44 Mount St. Clare students touring Washington DC and colonial Virginia this week. Highlights include the White House, Congressional Library, Capitol, Jamestown, Williamsburg, Mount Vernon, and a two night Potomac River stay. Four faculty members accompany the group.
Buzzy Haddon Per dow returns from nine months in Japan and arrives at his parents home on a 30 day leave including travel. He drove from California and will report back to Coronado, his new base, after the leave.
Illinois State Police Officer Garrett spoke on teen automobile safety to about 140 Henry local students and parents at Henry-Senachwine High School. He presented a safety film, highlighted a survey of 175 violations in six and a half hours, and urged stricter traffic rule adherence.
Citizens National bank of Toluca hosts an open house in its newly remodeled quarters tomorrow May 7. The bank, organized in 1919, shows deposits of 3 467 672 80 and lists James Hattan and B J Ghigiieri among current officers with Frances Durham Betty Kennedy and others among staff.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 pm at Boose funeral home for Harry Porter Monroe a retired farmer who died Monday night May 4 at St Margaret's hospital Spring Valley He was born Sept 26 1872 in the Tiskilwa area and married Harriett Tanquary Feb 3 1894 The couple farmed west and south of Henry later moving to Henry Survivors are nephews and nieces on the Tanquary side with no children and several relatives in Kansas and Arizona
Henry Boy Scouts held an afternoon camping trip at the dump grounds near Hennepin with a camp fire service and court of honor Sunday. About 20 Scouts and 20 parents attended. Jerry Farr earned first class and two merit badges, Public Speaking among them, as did Bill Greek and Bill Child with their respective badges.
Henry State Bank plans an open house Friday from 7 to 10 PM to mark 50 years since its Sparland origin and 1941 move to Henry. The bank began as a private firm with eight partners including William Riddell and J. Thompsoni. Warren Wescott served as cashier until 1937. The Sparland institution incorporated in 1920 as a state bank with William S. Riddell as president and Dr. E. E. Royce among directors. post 1941, Dayne Farr became cashier.
May Queen Kay Newton daughter of Mr and Mrs Lawrence Newton was chosen by parish girls at St Marys church after the 8 oclock mass. The May Crowning program on Sunday features the living Rosary with attendants Lorraine Kaliher and Jean Marie Schmitt, and school children. Rev Harold Prendergast Camp Grove will speak followed by Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. Everyone is welcome to attend.
Swift brothers Percy and Clare purchased the tract offered at public auction last Saturday. The land includes a residence and a large shop on the north side of the road near Whitefield corners. sale overseen by Walter C. Overbeck, attorney for Henry.
About 150 members of the Camp Grove Sportsmen's Club hunted west of Henry last Sunday. A feral wolf weighing 1 pound was shot on the first drive, five foxes were killed, and several deer were seen in the timber. Lunch was provided by Bill King and Alden Rickey of Rickey Studios. The group, described as the largest ever in the area, plans another hunt. The wolf den was found west of Henry, with remains of five pigs three chickens and one hen pheasant reported nearby. The club is said to be the largest sportsmen’s group in Illinois, drawing members from Marshall Peoria Putnam Stark and Bureau counties.
