Torrance Is Elected President of Putnam County Education Association

Wol Torrance, principal of Senachwine Grade School District 534 in Putnam, was elected president of the Putnam County Education Association on Thursday, April 22. He defeated incumbent Warren Stout, a social studies teacher at Putnam County High School, Granville. Also elected were James David of Hennepin as vice president, Fred Kinkin of Standard Grade School as treasurer, and Mrs Deryl Schertz of Henry as secretary.

Putnam Supervisors Name Griffith as Chairman for 1969

The Putnam County Board of Supervisors organized for the coming year naming W. Lynn Griffith of McNabb chairman. Griffith represents Magnolia Township and has served since 1969. Robert Kidd of Granville was seated as a new member after replacing Julius Hansen. Zoning was approved to convert a 7.69 acre tract in Senachwine Township owned by Mrs. William E. Clift Jr. to residential use, to be known as the Clift Subdivision with six lots.

Unofficial Candy Sale Claimed for Little League Benefit

A group is selling candy citywide to raise funds for Little League Baseball but has no connection to local Henry II officials or the organized Little League. Henry II officials say their ag day will be held later in spring and residents should donate then.

Funeral services for Barney Bergantz 96

Barney Bergantz a retired Henry farmer died Sunday May 2 at St Margaret's Hospital Spring Valley Funeral services were held Tuesday at St Joseph's Church with Rev Roger D Noonan officiating Interment in St Patrick's Cemetery Pallbearers included William Nelson Bernard Nelson Melvin Rice Jr Tom Rice Marion Jester and John Short The Child Memorial Home managed arrangements Bergantz born August 18 1874 in Marshall County to Lorenz and Josephine Whettal Bergantz married February 18 1904 to Mary Apfel who died in 1963 He is survived by three sons Bernard Ivan and Francis Bergantz three daughters Edith Rice Gertrude Nelson and Margaret Williams ten grandchildren and eight great grandchildren Two sons three sisters and two brothers preceded him in death

Henry Little League Builds Equipment House

Henry Little League has a permanent equipment building at the diamond made possible by a donation of lumber from M D Printing Co sourced from a German press crating. Officers in Jenny Jays garage attached doors and siding, with two front double doors and HENRY on each side. Weidman’s Lumber Gambles Read Bros. cooperation and flatbed truck use are acknowledged. Panthers claim conference title with record track show

Flynn, Winship, Shevokas lead Putnam County Hue School to a 75 point victory over Low Point-Washburn at Metamora. Mike Winship posts a 10 04.5 two mile and Flynn adds a 52-4% shot put as three new marks enter the record book alongside Stan Shevakas discus and other top placers.

Sparland District Sets Junior College Deadlines

Sparland District No. 3 residents must file letters of intent by May 15 to attend a public junior college for the simmer session. Computer Trouble Hits Henry News Office This Week

The Henry News office faced computer failure in their Compugraphic photo typesetting system. A company technician could not fix it. a veteran serviceman worked through Friday and Saturday without resolution. Ottawa Daily Times lent help on Tuesday but no corrections were possible.

Henry Harbor Improvement Permits Filed in Illinois

The Illinois division of waterways reports four construction permit applications for Henry Harbor dredging on the right bank of the Illinois River. Public input may be sent to John C. Guillou at 201 W. Monroe St Springfield before May 7. Marshall asks the city of Henry to dredge the harbor.

Wenona Airman Earns Distinguished Flying Cross

U S Air Force Major David E. Yare son of Mrs Mary E Yare Wenona Illinois received the Distinguished Flying Cross for extraordinary aerial achievement in Southeast Asia. He supported a heavy bomber strike as an EB 66 reconnaissance electronic warfare officer remaining in the target area under antiaircraft fire until the mission was completed. Assigned at Takhli Royal Thai Air Force Base during his combat tour he was honored at Ent AFB Colorado where he serves as a personnel officer with a unit of the Aerospace Defense Command.

General Telephone rural upgrading ahead of plans

General Telephone Company of Illinois reports rapid progress on a $50 million rural improvement program. Operating VP David E Anderson says the plan to eliminate all rural multi party service by 1973 is ahead of schedule with 128 of 324 exchanges upgraded to Suburban Service. Over 68 000 rural subscribers will gain improved service, with towns including Hennepin Henry Magnolia Washburn Wenona completed and others like Camp Grove LaRose Lostant Sparland Toluca Varna slated through 1973.

Fires Hit Vacant Farms Near Henry Across Two Days

A string of suspicious blazes strikes vacant properties near Henry. At 12 a.m. April 28 a farmhouse burned to the ground two and a half miles north of Henry on Route 29, with Arson suspected. Earlier, around 2:20 a.m. April 26, a vacant farm home on Western Avenue, owned by heirs of the late Leslie Gustafson, was destroyed. Henry Fire Protection District investigated with help from the police chief. A grass fire on Route 18 and a car fire on Route 26 prompted additional responses. Investigations continue into the causes of the fires and no injuries reported.

Steel truck spill blocks Rt 26 reopening after spill

A mishap on Rt 26 one-half mile east of Hennepin spilled 30 000 pounds of steel ingots from a flatbed bound for Jones and Laughlin Steel Plant. A broken restraining strap caused the load to fall. the road reopened April 28. Sheriff Martha Calbow notes the expressway route from Peoria to Chicago.
