Mayor Fred A Ford announces appointments for the year with council approval. Salaries stay the same as prior years. New water plant tanks and switchboard installed. dog licenses to be issued. asphalt paving planned with WPA help. Financial status shows a general fund balance but outstanding obligations ahead.
Robbers held up the O Hazel dance pavilion near McNabb early Monday after 8 am. Two men in a blue Ford coach stole two ending machines from owner George Biszak and his daughter, who reported the break-in after the thieves cut telephone lines. The robbers, described as two men and an accomplice, fled in a Ford. Loss estimated at about two hundred dollars. The intruders acted without violence.
Three men held up Ad's Ye Olde Tavern on ite 29 south of Henry this noon, taking away sending machines. The sighting mirrors a similar job at O'Hazel Pavilion, suggesting a staged method.
Classified notice reports a bicycle stolen from the porch of Mark Allard of Henry. Scott Osborne of Lacon located the wheel a mile away and returned it, noting it was found in a field behind a fence in Saratoga Township ten miles west of Henry, with investigators pursuing leads.
Five boosters dismantled a building on Western Avenue for the Marshall Putnam Fair with lumber headed to the Fair Grounds for a possible new office. Donors included Emil Goetz Lostant Carl Rose Henry John Fehring Henry C D Marshall Sparland and George Appel Lostant substitute for John Garvin president of the Fair Association. The group discussed opening the fair on Labor Day September 5 to draw visitors from Peoria Peru La Salle Streator Princeton and surrounding counties. They also debated a new fence around the race track a baseball diamond a piano purchase and other improvements for the season.
Memorial services were held at Henry City Cemetery for Thomas L. Jones 80 former Henry banker who died at his Arlington Virginia home Monday. He spent most of his life in Marshall County and was connected with the First National Bank in Henry until 1910. He was an uncle of Mrs Clarence Duke and Lloyd Jones. The funeral cortege traveled from Bureau to Henry Cemetery with brief services officiated by Rev H G Dusenberry. Interment followed. The widow and son Ellsworth Jones with wife will return to Arlington after visiting Henry.
The Illinois River bridge at Lacon is slated to cost about 578 994 dollars with painting and traffic setup, likely rising to around 600 000 dollars including incidental expenses. Wally Green of Standard and formerly of Henry was chosen chair man of the Putnam County Democratic Central Committee at a Tuesday meeting in Hennepin. Green serves as a State highway patrolman assigned to paved roads in Putnam and Marshall Counties. Mark E Kays of Magnolia was elected secretary and treasurer, with Green L F Boyle George Grasser Joe Panier and Mark Kays named as delegates to the Democratic State convention.
Several hundred pounds of buffalo fish were stolen Sunday night from a crate on the lakeside north of Henry. The fish belonged to Henry Sievers Ed Hall and John Orr. The trio has endured a rough season with about twenty thousand pounds of carp and buffalo lost when their storing barge was ripped apart to free fish.
John Bumgarner of McNabb addressed the Lowmanhip com mitteemen on the 1938 soil conservation and corn allotment program. The State committee estimates 55 percent compliance nationally, with local variation in Marshall Putnam and surrounding areas. Carryover corn projected at 400 million bushels for October 1, 1938, vs 886 million in 1933.
Walter IE Cook of Toledo Ohio retires from railroad service after 48 years. Born in Putnam he moved to Ohio as a youth and started with the New York Central in 1890. He became chief cashier of the Ann Arbor Railroad in 1912 and serves until retirement on April 30. He celebrated his 71st birthday that day.
The Henry School Band will give its first public performance on Thursday night May 12 in the high school gym. The 15 minute concert precedes the annual senior play. Superintendent Roy F Steele says the band has made excellent progress and invites all community members to attend.
A Varna reunion for former residents now living in the Chicago area will be held May 10 at the Sky Top roof in the Medical Arts Building Chicago. The Sparland High School Band, in its second season, earned notable honors at the State high school band contest in Rock Island. Director Arthur Blocher is pictured in the foreground with both high and grade school players and lists the segment rosters across instruments for the combined group.
Alvin E Hofer 36 son of Mr and Mrs Valentine Hofer of Peoria and formerly of Henry died suddenly of a heart attack in Pueblo Colorado on April 30 6. He leaves two sisters Mrs Eleanor Dunlay of Dunlap and Mrs Dorothy Wittan of Peoria. Funeral was held Wednesday at 9 30 a m at St Marys Church Henry with Rev Andrew Schauer. pallbearers named. Out of town relatives attended.
Two new sousaphones purchased for the Henry School Pand. One funded by Henry City Council from Mercian Drug Store, the other by grade and high school boards from Wood Fill Jewelry Store. Cost around SIGS Gach, saving over a hundred dollars versus Peoria prices. Horns become permanent band property and will be played by Bernice Sipe and Jeannette Bullington.

Two contracts for the new Hennepin bridge were awarded Tuesday in Springfield. Wisconsin Bridge & Iron Co. will erect the steel for 76750, and K Knudson Co. of Chicago will paint the bridge for 6550. Empire Construction Co. of Chicago bid 347345 for floor and walls, but bids exceeded estimates and new bids will be invited.

Ed Reismeyer of the Elmer Hunt farm in Whitefield Township lost about 150 chicks in a brood house fire. The chicks were insured through Millway Hatchery at Henry and will be replaced by the hatchery.
