The Henry Greys defeated the fast traveling nine 9 to 4 in the opening game. Clark pitched for the opponents with mixed results as Henry’s ninth inning rally produced their nine runs. Stoner and Travers sparked the offense with key hits while Peden, Kissinger, and Smith contributed multi hit efforts.
In the eighth inning Wallace singled Haasi doubled and Clark reached on a Texas leaguer. Williams doubled later and Stoner tripled scoring two, Ford, Ginnochio and Haas contributed RBI hits as four runs came in. Final line shows four runs four hits one error. Attendance 400.
The Epworth League banquet on Monday May first drew about eighty attendees. Music by the orchestra accompanied two Gretchen Schiffbauer solos and speakers Rev L N Thompson of Lacon and Dr J T Jones of Rock Island. Dr Jones announced a Rock Island River Bluff Institute and faculty plans including Rev Turner as Henry pastor. Walter Helper acted as toastmaster and Tadias Aid Society served the menu.
Miss Ina Henkins daughter of Mr and Mrs Albert Heinrich and William Heinrich son of Henry were married in Peoria on May 3. They left for a short wedding trip to La Salle and Chicago. Mrs Heinrich is popular and well regarded. the groom is a prosperous young farmer of sterling character.
Miss Geraldine Richmond directed a grade level music revue in the public schools showcasing songs, dances, living pictures, and a doll ship story. Performances featured sixth to eighth graders with costumes inspired by Gypsy, Dutch, and American Indian themes, aided by teachers and local supporters from Bacon and Putnam.
Dr E W Newhalfen purchased the North Seventh Street building through a trade with Mr Benson of Peoria. The site is now occupied by the Kelsey harness shop with Newhalfen renting to Mr Kelsey and retaining certain transit rights over adjacent areas.
The American a SE on witt pivera movier at the opera-house next Thursday May 11 features The Untamed starring Tom Mix plus The Wandering Bath Tub and other specials. Proceeds go to the Community House fund, a worthy cause needing town support.
William H Applen, 73, of Saratoga Township, died April 30, 1922 after a brief illness. Born July 28, 1848 near Rome Illinois he lived as a blacksmith, farmer and horseman leaving a large family and many relatives. Interment was in Magnolia cemetery with a large funeral service at Whitefield M B Church and M E B Church.
Fred L. Defenbaugh born Magnolia March 20 1876 died St Marys hospital Streator April 26 1922 after appendicitis and bowel obstruction at age 46. Son of Samuel and Mary, survived by Frances Sivell his wife and siblings with parents predeceased. He attended Magnolia public school and married Frances Sivell January 20 1896.
Henry Mayor Pace will toss the first ball to open the baseball season in Henry as Galva visits. The game is scheduled for Sunday with a 2:30 p.m. start and seats in the grandstand are urged to be filled.
Dr. D. C. Johnson, with fifteen years experience, moves from Belvidere Illinois to Henry to open an eye care practice Saturday. He will fit glasses and treat eye troubles, occupying space in the Hartley addition with his wife Mrs Johnson and son Harold. The Johnsons are welcomed as a valued addition to Henry’s business life.
Gus Panos spends a few days in Chicago. Mrs. Whesler visits Pathan relatives. Albert Longeran of Princeton makes a call. Charles Jones and Albert Barth on a Davenport business trip. Mrs. C A Phillips and son visit Scranton kin. Heininger couple attend Bradford ball game and visit Aunt Deisher. Mrs. Weber of Bureau returns home after winter with Motter family. Bayne family and friends spend Sunday at Glenn Strawn home west of Sparland. Camp family to be home soon from Texas. Sterewhalfen Newhalfen and Peter man share Sunday dinner with Mead family. Bickerman family hosts Wolfe and Katherine of McNabb and Hoeferlin family.
About 400 people gathered on the school campus last Thursday to mark U S Grant's 100th birth anniversary and dedicate a flag given to the Grammar School by W R C No 2 Henry. Teachers pupils and officials gave addresses praising bravery loyalty and courtesy. county superintendent Wes B King spoke on values and Grant's example.
Residents of Senachwine township will vote on May 20 in Putnam on creating an addition to the existing building to form a four year high school. The plan would absorb most of the township and part of Bureau county, aiming to provide local higher education and equal access across the county.
A correction notes an error in last week’s item about a visit at Peoria. The couple should read Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Goebel rather than Mr. and Mrs. Walter Gabriel.
The Henry Alumni Association will hold a business meeting in the Directors Room of the First National Bank Building on Monday evening May 8 at 8 o clock. All members are urged to be present. O. H. Davis President.
