In Magnolia Friday evening the Magnolia literary meet awarded Henry third place in the poetry and declamation events. Granville took first and Lostant second with cups presented to winners. participants included Aaron, Swaney, Theo, Colby, and others from Lostant, Sparland, Tonica, and Hop kins.
The field for school board includes I. E. Broaddus as a new candidate. Marty Mattiogh will not seek re election, Edmund Quinn and J. O. Winship seek re election as directors. On the grade board J. H. Wagg er Clyde Worley and Charles Meier up for re election as president and directors. Polls open 2 to 5 pm.
Evans leads county pauper demands for the quarter ending March with 838.13 dollars, up 25 from December, followed by Bennington and Henry Sigber. List covers townships Henry and Steuben, Robers, Whitefield, Saratoga and Hopewell with varied cash, groceries, coal and medical payments totaling 561.08 for Henry area and smaller sums for others.
A sale of fifteen Jersey cattle shipped from Wisconsin by the Kiwanis club and local businessmen averaged 146.66 dollars each, totaling 2110.60. Buyers included Fred Voehl Louis Hofer William Foxerty who bought two head each and H Stoner Wm Thiel bar Wymer Schlosser Elmer Wier Chris Olson Frank Ziegler Flavel Bland Otto Hassler and Mike Schwi derski who purchased one each.
Saturday night a thief failed to steal two cars in succession near Dr. Nielsen’s and a Chevrolet coach. Mr and Mrs George Burt observed a tall slender man in a grey overcoat and black slouch hat lingering near the cars and alerted bystanders. The suspect fled through the back after Nightwatchman Evan Sleater, but was not found.
Henry Township voters will select a constable and a school trustee on the Republican and Democratic tickets. Republican candidates are Wm Rambo Sr for constable and J A Williams for school trustee. Democratic choices are Jack Wil for constable and Wm Hein for school trustee. Polls open from 7:00 a m to 5:00 p m.
Fifteen western horses sold at auction bringing in 965 dollars total. The average per horse was 64.33 with the top price reaching 75 dollars.
The Federated Men’s Bible Class of Marshall County adopted a plan urging converted members to evangelize unconverted peers, fund religious education for youths, and provide daily Bible schooling. It calls for full church attendance, accredited classes with the Illinois Council of Religious Education, and home and community faith activities. Rev Rompel, Mrs Phillips, Mrs Downey, Wilford Wright, Rev Nilsson, and Rev Rezner attended.
Ellen Barry had her tonsils removed at the hospital on Monday. Junior Roberts recovering from measles and croup is able to be up and around now. The Ladies Aid bake sale at Kirin's garage for the Christian church was well patronized and cleared about $16.00.
Frank L. Miller a widowed farmer living near Benson, Richland county, hanged himself on Saturday night. The coroner's inquest and neighbors noted heavy debt and a looming foreclosure sale set for April 5. Miller's body was found Sunday morning by his hired man Don Rogers after discovering overshoes in the kitchen.
Adam Staab fractured his collar bone Friday while trimming grape vines at Mrs. Anna Schmitt’s home. The grape arbor cross-piece gave way, sending him to the cement walk and causing a bad bruise and severe pain. He is resting easier now.
A Wednesday April 6 meeting in Marshall at the Henry Theatre will discuss boosting the dairy industry in Marshall and Putnam counties. A.B. Lynch, dairy marketing head for the Illinois Agricultural Association, will speak, with several local talks planned. The dairy cow’s growing revenue helps many farmers stay on the farm.
Two white mice were caught in a trap the past week by Mrs. Maude Hamm of Hennepin. Albinos of any bird or animal life are rarely seen or caught.
The Department of Public Works will hold a public hearing at the Pere Marquette Hotel in Peoria at 10 o clock Wednesday April 6 1927 regarding the proposed location of Route 88 from Peoria to Buda via Camp Grove and Bradford.
Rev and Mrs Paul L Corbin missionaries in China sit about 500 miles from the conflict. Located northwest of the war, they may travel northeast to Peking if forced to move. They will stay as long as possible while most missionaries have decided to depart.
The Henry high and grade schools hold a preliminary contest at the M E Church on Tuesday April 5 at 8 pm. Winners advance to the Sparland Invitational on April 15 and Venona on April 22. Participants perform declamations music orations and instrumental works with judges rendering a decision.
Mrs George Prather of Annawan visits with sons Warren Edward and William and families. Henry high school will compete in the Sparland Literary contest in Lacon on April 15. Mr and Mrs Ola Hunt of Sparland visited Mrs T S Hunt. Emma Martins new home at the late Susan Peters residence is being redecorated. George Dally and daughter called on John Diverbiss. Joseph Newhalfen family and Ralph Merdian visited relatives at DePue. Clifford Green of Chicago visited with his parents Patrick and Mrs Green. George Deitsch spent days at the country home of Mrs George Shurts.
Kinney's Royal Entertainers led by Hickman Kincaid broadcast from WLBI Wenona Mondays 9 to 10 30 pm with enhanced power. The ensemble features Matthew Steele Frank Humphrey Gene Clarence Wm Williams Nar er Princeton Milford Marshall and others performing a 24 piece program of vocal and instrumental numbers including Someones Losin Susan and Whisper You'll Be Mine.
Frank E. Anderson of Lone Tree attempted death by hanging in a wash house yesterday morning about 6 30. He was found a few minutes later by a son and rescued. Weak heart and eyes plus a fear of cancer cited as causes and failing health raise fear of recurrence due to pneumonia history.
The foods class of the high school hosted the annual school board dinner Tuesday evening. All members and their wives attended except C. L. Clawson. The four course menu included orange ice, mashed potatoes and gravy, breaded pork chops, creamed string beans, rolls, coffee, cream, jelly, butter, pear salad, Paradise pudding, wafers and mints.
A marriage license was issued to Daisy Belk and Harry Scrivens of Henry at Lacon the past week. We have been unable to locate anyone who knows them to obtain a complete story.
H H Brown opens a cash only grocery store opposite the Niblock school on the Niblock farm, about five miles west of Henry. He will operate a strictly cash business.
Mrs. Jesse Phelps hosted the Saratoga unit meeting with Miss Souder of Illinois and Miss Emma Scott guiding lessons on Keeping Household Accounts and Gardening. Eight members enrolled, a pot luck lunch followed, and planning for Better Homes Week was noted with next meeting set for April 20 at Mrs. Francis Quinn's home.
The state highway department outlines a new alignment for Route 89 from Hennepin south to Metamora passing west of Magnolia and north of McNabb. It details crossings, turns near Granville Varna Washburn La Rose and Peoria, with a planned viaduct south of La Rose and further work to finalize locations near Hennepin and Washburn.
Mr and Mrs Joseph Hank welcome a son named Edwin Peter born Sunday. The baby weighs five pounds and both mother and child are doing well. Grandparents include Edwin Van Wagner of Kansas City and Mr and Mrs Peter Hank.
The Henry municipal band conducted by Géof P. Thompson performed at the opera house Friday evening. A modest audience enjoyed several fine selections, trombone and cornet solos by Leslie Klein and Bert Wimner, xylophone solos by Wilfred Wright, and a piano accompaniment by Miss Rose Reinbeck with George Harney.
Chicago baseball fans found a sign in Charles Greenlee's garage recalling the July 21 1915 game when the Henry Greys beat the Chicago White Sox 3 to 2. Frank Coe had a copy made to display at Sox headquarters after spring training.
Dr and Mrs E W Newhalsen of Peoria hosted Sunday dinner with Dr and Mrs W M Kaliher. Kenneth Parrett of Normal visited with uncle Harry Wierman over Sunday. Mrs Bertha Wall of Bradford attended nephew Clarence Roach's funeral last Tuesday. Mr and Mrs Co V Conkrite and Mr and Mrs Herbert Doyle and son John attended Sunday dinner at Karl Doyle's home and worship at Saratoga M E church.
