A committee formed last March guides the board in evaluating work and setting service avenues. The group stresses testing and planning uptake, inviting further input and aiming to align actions with established goals.
Marshall County Red Cross reports overrun disaster budget for 1954 55. Ellsworth Bunker says March to June brings tornadoes and floods as relief work continues in upper Ohio river floods Mississippi Tennessee and Tombigbee flood areas. Feeding and sheltering evacuees in Armory Aberdeen and 11 Tennessee counties, about 5 500 families affected nationwide.
The 1955 national corn support rate will average 1.58 dollars or 87 percent of parity, down from 90 percent last year. Putnam County reported 1.64 and Marshall County 1.65 for 1954, while 1955 Marshall and Putnam figures are not yet received by the ASC. Henry ASC notes the office is handling the wheat take over.
Otto Steffey, president of the Illinois Agriculture Association, told about 1,000 Farm Bureau leaders that Extension Service personnel cannot participate in certain Farm Bureau programs. He urged mutual support while preserving the distinct roles in legislation taxation and affiliated companies. He also discussed price supports for crops and soybeans, urging balance and improvements without harming milk and dairy sectors. The association plans a May meeting to set a permanent headquarters site.
Putnam and Marshall County clubs pick Beverly Biel bite ine and Keith Belt to attend the Illinois Music Camp for two weeks, following a Sunday program at Toluca. The selection comes from a committee including Mrs. Henry McGrey and Mrs. Lee Titcomb, with donations funding the scholarships.
The First Lutheran Church of Varna reports $29188 in pledges toward a building fund campaign after an all day canvass plus a morning service sermon on The Basic Gift. Pastor Carl H. Sandgren led final canvassing instruction and commission ceremonies with Pastor O K Bosse assisting. Coffee was served at Luther Hall as volunteers reported back.
Tipton high school coach Charles Tipton presented 11 varsity baseball letters and seven varsity basketball letters at the American Legion athletic banquet. Major baseball awards went to Hiram Bracken, Roger Quinn, Tom Koehler, and others. basketball awards honored Roger Quinn, Bob Smith, Ralph Daniels, Art Forrest, Tom Lou, Steve Hunt, and Harley Henkins with several seniors recognized for leadership and effort.
Magnolia Globe Trotters host the McNabb All-Star ladies team Friday at 8 PM in Magnolia Swaney gym. The event funds the Magnolia community Methodist church building fund with MYF sponsorship.
Mrs Mae Danhof of Lacon sued four Lacon and as Chillicothe tavern owner under the dram shop act. She was awarded 10 000 of the 15 000 dollars she sought for mishaps to her husband after intoxication in said taverns. The case unfolded over four days in circuit court with a late verdict and a lengthy jury deliberation.
Henry Sehachwine high school alumni set May 24 banquet. Wayland Downey presides at Henry Building and Loan meeting. Tomorrow night officers and chairmen will meet to lay groundwork. Officers: Downey president. Rossetti vice president. Forrest secretary. Hoscheidt treasurer. Committees listed include Decoration, Table, Dish, Dance, Registration, Reception, Nominating, Program, Invitation, Memory Book, Menu with numerous named members.
The Sparland grade and high school bands and the high school chorus will present a musical program at 8 p.m. next Tuesday evening April 5 at the school. Mrs Arthur Blocher directs the grade school band and Prof Arthur Blocher directs the high school band and chorus. Marjorie Gallup will be accompanist. Solo and ensemble numbers include a girls sextette Lucille McCullough Barbara McDonald Barbara Biggar Jo Anna Campbell Judy Osborne and Beverly Sumitt. Donita Swanson plays a piano solo and Bob Turnbull sings a vocal solo. Additional pieces include a cornet duet Shirley Olson Beverly Summitt a clarinet duet JoAnne Campbell Barbara Bigger a saxophone duet Beverlyn Eulonda Jones and another vocal solo by Lucille McCullough.
The final plea for Red Cross donations is posted at the post office and by Mrs Lee Wright the chairman. To date 398 memberships have been recorded with a total collection of 603 dollars.
A note from Camp Grove shows the club applying to the Department of Conservation for 15000 pheasant chicks and 700 quail this year. Members met March 21 at Camp Grove hall to set policy for 1955 including farm-member guarantees and new dues. The group plans to raise and release birds on partner farms and will hold a general meeting at 7:30 p.m. to nominate officers.
Phillip Pickard and Kendall Ball of Wenona completed their constat ory work and joined the class of 137 at the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite in Peoria. The event took place at the Scottish Rite Cathedral with about 750 attending a spring reunion banquet preceding the conalstory work.
A tree planting demonstration in Hennepin Henry at the Floyd Allen farm, six miles northeast of the Allen property, is set for Monday afternoon April 4 at 1 pm. The event, a cooperative effort of the Marshall Putnam Soil Conservation district the Illinois Department of Conservation and the University of Illinois extension service, will show soil and wildlife conservation linkages and promote wildlife cover planting.
The Sportsman’s Club will host state Department of Conservation director Jen Palmer as a special guest at its April 28 meeting. President William Held says details are not final, but the date is set and a stag fish fry and a film titled Honkers in Witness will be featured.
Plans announced for Sparland elections in April. Steuben Township voters will elect a supervisor and highway commissioner with William Riddell Sr seeking re election and Merle Dawson and William Madison as major candidates. Sparland school election set for April 9 with three seats on board. Sparland village ballot on April 19 includes mayor treasurer clerk and four aldermen with several unopposed candidates.
Otto Louis and Marshall Downey were re elected directors at the Putnam Grain Co annual meeting held last Friday night about 150 attendees enjoyed an oyster supper. Officers were renewed Otto Louis president April Read treasurer and Roger Magnuson secretary with directors John Wherry Lloyd Pearson Kenneth Winship and Downey. Staff includes Leland Kelley manager Howard Anderson driver Marge Kelley bookkeeper and John Stanfield helper.
