Mrs John B Foster of Wenona reports demand for Shetland ponies led by Leo Murphy of Stoga Township. Ponies sold to a customer in Michigan and another buyer in Ul. The article notes producers including Jimmy Murphy and the Murphy family.
Mrs. Lowell Hageman visited relatives in Henry and Pekin while Mr. and Mrs. Albert Prestin hosted guests from Varna. Peoria visitors stopped by the Hagemans, Eckards, and several area families. Public health nurse Emma Smart R N plans Jacksonville conference attendance and a tour of schools for the blind and deaf.
Reservations for a two day tour to St Louis Missouri April 20 and 21 were received forming a full busload. The tour includes Forest Park art museum Jewel Box Shaw Gardens Jefferson Memorial Lindbergh trophies and shopping time. Dinner April 20 followed by Death of a Salesman or Die Meistersinger. Tour committee members are Mrs Joe Shanklin chairman Mrs Ralph Wilson Mrs Carl Otto and Mrs Leo Quinn.
Pfc. Richard L. Malavolti, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Malavolti of Hennepin, has been promoted to corporal in the U S Air Force. He has served five months with the 1936th Airways and Air Communications Service Squadron at Lagens Field, Terceira, Azores. A 1946 graduate of Hennepin high school he enlisted for three years and trained at Sheppard AFB Wichita Falls Texas. His first foreign duty tour follows clerk typist training at Fort Francis E Warren Cheyenne Wyoming.
The Cairo Evening Citizen of March 11 features a full page with Rev. Wayne A. Child and a sermon on God's Way of Redemption. The piece urges placing Christ before Easter customs and calls for Easter Sunday to be a Christian day of worship and praise. Rev. Child is the son of Mr. and Mrs. A B Child of Henry. the page was sponsored by Cairo business concerns.
Ralph W. E. Chenoweth of Tis kilwa is in Perry Memorial hospital after an operation several days ago. He expects to return home in a week or 10 days and has many friends in Henry and Putnam counties hoping for a speedy recovery. He is a former rural mail carrier on the Lone Tree route from Tiskilwa and a keen Philadelphia Athletics fan.
Memorial hospital administrator Arnold Walter says the project will raise bed capacity from 0 to 100 beds and add surgery, X ray, laboratory, treatment, laundry, storage and housekeeping services. Once built and remodeled, the facility will rank with the area’s best.
The Magnolia Juvenile Grange No. 65 organizes with 42 members aged 5 to 14. Officiating officers include matron Mrs. Howard Smith and assistants Mrs. Joe Hawks Mrs. Turner Mills and Miss Marjorie Powell, with Sidney Glover as master and Fred Stark as overseer.
Town meetings set for Tuesday April 4 to decide township spending and tax levels. Citizens urged to review next year’s budget now while officials in Winnetka Illinois debate federal funds for a new post office.
Residents of Marshall and Putnam counties continue purchasing United States savings bonds in large volumes. In February this year Marshall County spent 70 60 in E bonds and Putnam County bought 7 601 in savings bonds, with last year’s totals significantly higher.
John E. Luce a longtime Tiskilwa jeweler and community leader died at his home on Wednesday March 16 after a long illness. Born June 1 1881 he operated a jewelry store there for 46 years prior to retiring in 1948. He served as village clerk and school board member for decades and helped organize the high school band. Surviving are his wife two daughters a sister and many relatives. Funeral services were held at the Tiskilwa funeral home with Masonic rites. Burial was in Mt Bloom Cemetery.
A local report outlines the Magnolia fire district formation with officers elected Fire Chief Conrad Bickerman Assistant Chief Alan Glenn Treasurer Walter Rillage Secretary Denton Strode. A three member committee George Haws Dallas Brown James Bickerman organized the district from the new fire station.
Walter Borneman of near Hennepin led a Marshall county bounty meeting claiming 240 dollars for 47 foxes and one wolf killed by airplane. Others filing claims included Ward Harmon Frank McNutt William Baggs and Woodrow Marks with smaller counts. total 187 foxes and two wolves documented since the December board meeting.
Mr and Mrs Lowell Bjorling and Jean Altona join Mr and Mrs George Mathis for a Friday birthday supper. Local families attend plays and library events in Peru and Mendota. Bettye Jean Roach joins Leonard Rickey party in Dunlap for Beulah Bland Williams book signing. Several trips to Peoria for church and personal affairs accompany community socializing.
A Bradford meeting aims to form a community group to purchase Broadmoor Lake for public use and fishing. The Chicago Hexthwestern railroad plans to sell the water property and adjacent farmland, with state officials pledging to stock the lake if it becomes a public recreation area.
Wilma Stehl 4-H Federation president presided at Swaneyami Lacon and Lacon meetings held March 24 and 25. About 120 parents and club members attended each session with Elizabeth Day and Nancy Lansing assisting. Awards were given to Gran 3-in Boosters for three consecutive years. Farm Adviser Andrew Harris spoke on summer 4-H camp. Marjorie Frantzieb noted camp details. Desiring to attend camp should be stated by May 1. most applicants may go this year. Entertainment featured 4-H members from Granville Hennepin Boosters, Hopewell Neighbor Kids, Saratoga, Bonewells, and Lacon clubs. Refreshments served at both meetings.
Ernest L. Wright, chair of the Marshall Putnam Production Marketing administration, announced that maximum moisture for ear corn eligible for loan drops to 17.5 percent on April 1 1950 and to 15.5 percent on May 1 1950. Samples received by March 31 1950 stay under the current rule. County office paperwork must be completed by April 1 or a new sample and $3 charge apply. Producers with loan completion notices should act before April 1.
