Illinois counties will assess personal property at full value beginning next year to relieve real estate tax burden. The state tax commission instructs counties to itemize 41 personal property categories and standardize auto assessments using township lists.
The First National Bank of Chillicothe opened for business after orders from the national banking department, with no restrictions. President H. B. Forsythe and cashier C. B. Zinser led a steady stream of deposits as operations resumed.
The Republican party of Henry Township will hold a meeting at City Hall tomorrow evening at 7 30 under the township central committee. The meeting is of general interest and all are urged to attend.
The Marshall County Democratic Committee met at the courthouse in Lacon Saturday afternoon and selected delegates and alternates to the judicial convention in Peoria on Friday April 7. Delegates include Andrew Merdian Sara toga township G C Swallow Whitefield township William Kinney Steuben township Otis McClary Richland township A M Stoner Roberts township Morris Dunn Lacon township George Heininger Henry township William Schlosser Hopewell township. Approximately 3 000 hunger strikers will pass through Henry on April 6 en route to Springfield to press for legislative relief. They will be joined by more marchers in towns along the route and seek talks with political leaders. Demands include weekly cash relief, a home debt moratorium, unemployment insurance funded by employers and the state, and release of 22 Christian County miners. Discrimination against Negro, foreign-born, and striking workers in relief distribution should end.
A Putnam County Taxpayers League committee asked the county board of supervisors at the courthouse on March 15 1938 to hire the county clerk at 200 a year the circuit clerk at 180 a year eliminate the county treasurer clerk hire and have the county judge refund 360 and the county farm superintendent refund 50 from their salaries for the balance of the year.
The Henry township annual officer election is set for next Tuesday April 4 with full Republican and Democratic tickets. Roy Miller leads the Republican slate for supervisor and Barney Mercian heads the Democratic bid. All offices elected will serve four years.
Two Henry girls earned honors at the Golden Basketball tournament in Rock Island last week. Opal Keenan was chosen center on the all-star tourney team and Verla Waughop received third place medal for high point honors as Henry girls placed fourth.
The secretary of state will supply each county clerk with a township list of automobile owners for tax assessment. The county clerk will pass the list to the assessor so no owner or car is missed during the tax process.
The Agriculture Secretary announced a 30 percent acreage reduction for cash crops as a condition of 1933 crop production loans totaling 90 million dollars from Reconstruction Finance funds. It lists exemptions, loan limits, interest, repayment dates, and enforcement provisions with penalties for false claims.
Representative Everett M. Dirksen of Pekin is named to the Immigration Territory and the District of Columbia committees by the Republican committee on committees. He sought Interstate and Foreign Commerce, but vacancies were filled. His first draft will be a bill allowing beer sales in the District of Columbia.
Mr and Mrs Ira Burton entertained a six o clock dinner at their home Tuesday evening in honor of Mr and Mrs Clement Fogerty. The evening was spent at cards until a late hour. Those present were Mr and Mrs Calvin Schlosser and Calvin Eugenie, Mr and Mrs Clement Fogerty and Audrey Ellen, Joseph Shearer and Miss Dorothy Hawksworth.
The Henry city council will hold a regular session at City Hall next Monday evening, April 3, outlining agenda items and local governance matters for residents.
Edwardsville and Madison county merchants sought a hearing on the state sales tax constitutionality, set for April 8 at the county courthouse, while continuing collection until a court opinion. A Henry meeting adopted a plan to charge a 1 to 3 cent scale on retail purchases to fund the 3 percent sales tax, with a temporary rule and a resolution signed by local business men.
Tonica a 600 population village has been bone dry since its 1859 land grant by A. J. West. The grant prohibited any liquor business on 160 acres, a clause repeatedly upheld in court as a constitutional measure. No dispensary is expected to operate even if temperance laws shift.
Funeral services for Mrs Lawrence Grosscup 48 longtime Magnolia resident were held Saturday at 1 PM at Macon Methodist Church. The body went to Brig hton Iowa for burial beside a daughter. She was active in church and social life and survived by her husband, parents Marshall Funk of Collins Iowa a sister Mrs Harold Morine of Hennepin.
The First National Bank and the First State Bank of Lacon reopen for business after holiday closure by presidential decree. The national bank has operated, while the state bank resumed last week.
Voters in Marshall county will mark ballots in April and June as four elections are scheduled. The calendar lists township supervisor and town clerk races on April 4, school district director and board member elections on April 8, city and village officers on April 18, and a judicial election for three circuit judges in the 10th judicial circuit on June 5, spanning Stark, Marshall, Peoria, Putnam and Tazewell counties.
The firm of Duke Brothers hardware and implement dealers reports a large clover seed business this spring. About 1500 bushels have been handled so far, seed brought from distant points due to prevailing bargains. Seed is received by Duke, cleaned, and bagged for delivery to seed dealers nationwide.
Federated Bible classes of Marshall and Putnam counties will meet in Sparland on April 6. Radio entertainer from La Salle will present a sample lesson by Secretary May. Address titled Christian Patriotism will be delivered by Senator Gunning of Princeton. Members hope this becomes a historic event.
Jr. and Mrs. Calvin Shelesser entertained a number of friends at a card party Wednesday evening. Hearts was the game of the evening. Refreshments were served.
The board of directors applied to the national bank examiner in Chicago for a conservator to oversee the First Henry National Bank. The conservator would have full authority, report only to the Federal government, and could hire staff while restricting withdrawals from non signing patrons. A new book system and possible service charges are planned, with no fixed term for the conservator.
A get together of the cousins and their families of Mrs Ada Mc Beath and Robert McAfee of Perry Town was held at Thomas Cain’s near Camp Grove on Tuesday evening March 21. The event featured games and visiting, followed by lunch, with attendees including Edw Darling family Floyd Smith Lary Dawson and families Olan Newman family Jack Johnston John Smith Ivan Ely and babe Clyde Young and son Everett Elmer Cain and daughter Fred Smith family and Thomas Cain and son.
Mr and Mrs John E Staab of Chillicothe announce the birth of a baby boy Lloyd Vernon on Monday morning March 20 weighing eight pounds. This is their second son. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs Frank Ziegler and Mr and Mrs Mike Staab of Chillicothe.
Sunday union service at the Methodist church under the local W C T U organization drew a large audience. The program portrayed the recent hearing before the Ways and Means Committee in Congress.
