Hunger strikers to pass through Illinois route to Springfield

Approximately 3 000 hunger strikers will pass through Henry on April 6 en route to Springfield to press for legislative relief. They will be joined by more marchers in towns along the route and seek talks with political leaders. Demands include weekly cash relief, a home debt moratorium, unemployment insurance funded by employers and the state, and release of 22 Christian County miners. Discrimination against Negro, foreign-born, and striking workers in relief distribution should end.

A Putnam County Taxpayers League committee asked the county board of supervisors at the courthouse on March 15 1938 to hire the county clerk at 200 a year the circuit clerk at 180 a year eliminate the county treasurer clerk hire and have the county judge refund 360 and the county farm superintendent refund 50 from their salaries for the balance of the year.

Government Cuts Acreages for Crop Loans

The Agriculture Secretary announced a 30 percent acreage reduction for cash crops as a condition of 1933 crop production loans totaling 90 million dollars from Reconstruction Finance funds. Mr and Mrs Ira Burton entertained a six o clock dinner at their home Tuesday evening in honor of Mr and Mrs Clement Fogerty. The evening was spent at cards until a late hour. Henry Merchants Form Sales Tax Plan In Illinois Town

Edwardsville and Madison county merchants sought a hearing on the state sales tax constitutionality, set for April 8 at the county courthouse, while continuing collection until a court opinion. A Henry meeting adopted a plan to charge a 1 to 3 cent scale on retail purchases to fund the 3 percent sales tax, with a temporary rule and a resolution signed by local business men.

Funeral services for Mrs Lawrence Grosscup 48 longtime Magnolia resident were held Saturday at 1 PM at Macon Methodist Church. The body went to Brig hton Iowa for burial beside a daughter. Voters in Marshall county will mark ballots in April and June as four elections are scheduled. The calendar lists township supervisor and town clerk races on April 4, school district director and board member elections on April 8, city and village officers on April 18, and a judicial election for three circuit judges in the 10th judicial circuit on June 5, spanning Stark, Marshall, Peoria, Putnam and Tazewell counties.

Henry Bank Seeks Conservator to Run First Henry National

The board of directors applied to the national bank examiner in Chicago for a conservator to oversee the First Henry National Bank. The conservator would have full authority, report only to the Federal government, and could hire staff while restricting withdrawals from non signing patrons. A new book system and possible service charges are planned, with no fixed term for the conservator.
