Botkin traced mail history from ancient times to today, noting the rise of air mail and the postal department’s financing challenges amid free matter and newspaper mail. He cited the system’s $800 million annual volume and warned on wrapping and addressing to curb losses from dead letters.
Census data released in Washington shows Marshall County listing 1181 farms in 1940 with 195.6 acres per farm while Putnam counts 505 farms at 181.4 acres average. Comparisons span 1935 and 1930 figures.
The Wonder Freeze company, leasing the vacant room, plans to reopen soon after winter occupancy by the Building Association and move to the Parker building likely as a temporary arrangement. Mrs. W. E. Blomfohr and Mrs. A. Rhoades visited Peoria on Tuesday.
Seniors present a revival style play titled Pure As The Driven Snow Working Girls Secret at Henry Gym Thursday and Friday April 17 and 18 under Rosella Hawkins. The cast includes Margaret Harney Jonathan Logan Dorathy Glatz Bill Wagner Steve Hunter Eldon Boy E Z Pickins Betty Dysart Norma Moline Lara Jean Bourdette Mary Elizabeth Owyan and Norma Klein in a melodramatic comedy praised for humor and song selections from the era.
The Marshall County Republican Central Committee recommends maintenance men and helpers for two crews in Magnolia and Mark in M.P. Counties and four crews in Marshall County split on both sides of the Illinois River. Camp Grove gets its first crew. Named are John Bell Wenona helper Christy Almone Toluca Horatio Campbell Sparland helper William Madison Sperland Walter Holsinger Lacon helper Earl Holmstrom Varna Raymond Swigart Camp Grove Charles Baker Camp Grove.
Miss Opal Keenan, the first politi cae under the Republican administration, is named junior stenographer in Penningfield Tiltiis, with report for duty Monday March 31. Roland R. Cross, M. D., director of the Department of Public Health, sent the notice. Keenan resigns as stenographer in the Potter Taw office after several years.

A flurry of social visits and travel notes from Henry and nearby towns. Mrs W A Boyle paid a brief Peoria visit while Mr and Mrs J W Taylor and son Richard visited from Kewanee. Several families hosted guests from Chicago and Kansas City over the weekend and more plans spanned trips to Champaign Shenandoah and Bloomington.
The Marshall Putnam Agricultural Conservation Association and Extension Service held a Thursday meeting at Henry National Bank building with about 115 attendees. J B Cunningham discussed tenancy as a historic but evolving institution and a 50 50 livestock share lease. E G Fruin spoke on soil fertility and housing facilities. L E Leigh reviewed the 1941 farm conservation program and quotas with questions answered by speakers.
The Illinois Commerce Commission authorized replacing diesel electric trains between Peoria Bureau Junction and nearby towns with motor bus service. Chicago Rock Island and Pacific will discontinue Nos. 221 222 227 228. Rock Island Motor Transit will operate buses on limited stops. Annual savings estimated at 44 880 for the railroad and about 15 000 in yearly operating costs with more frequent service. Mrs R A Thomason has influenza this week.
