Two U S submarines the Sculpin and another unnamed sub are missing after leaving coastal waters off Cromwell Washington. Captain Cromwell aged 42 from Illinois served as an aide to Admiral Withers and later joined the Pacific Fleet before his death.
Twenty five county fairs in the Northern Illinois division gathered Tuesday at LaSalle for a meeting of fair officials led by John Garvin Wenona president Halsey Monier Sparland secretary and treasurer Landa F Boyle McNabb superintendent beef cattle. The aim was to harmonize uniform premium lists for livestock and exhibits across fairs. Monier presides over the Northern Illinois District Fair Association and over the Central Illinois Trotting and Pacing Association. The Marshall Putnam Fair Association plans future meetings at the Henry State Bank building to finalize plans for the 1944 Henry fair.

Private Daerial Prather, serving with the U S Air Corps in New Guinea, reports receiving a Christmas present sent months earlier from Henry and Magnolia Community chests. He notes a moving picture show and a small candy shop at his post, observes natives and disease in the area, and mentions sending home a $19.11 money order.
Kathryn Brunski and Jack Murray of Wenona High School are chosen as DAR first by senior class members. Brunski led in class activities, chorus, and school programs with perfect four year honor rolls. Murray, a four letter athlete in baseball and basketball, earned high scholastic and citizenship ratings and starred in the senior play.
Harry J Barnes manager of the Illinois Oil Company and a Henry City Council member lies in critical condition with little chance of survival. Telegrams seek his son Private John Delbert Barnes who is on maneuvers in Louisiana. Red Cross contact efforts reported no word by noon.
A group of former pot-luck regulars met Tuesday at the invitation of Mrs. Rankin-Johnston to entertain Mrs. Delbert Mercer, a visitor in Henry. Attending were Mesdames Clinton Friday, Dayne Farry, E. Brennan, Orla Kemper, Alice Finnegan, Marjorie Walker, and Mrs. Lawrence Zierler and Mrs. Harold Friday could not attend.
Dale Eugene Bowen, son of Mrs. Gladys G Wood of Henry, Illinois, has graduated from the Naval Air Training Center in Corpus Christi and is commissioned as an ensign in the U S Naval Reserve. He is the first Henry resident to earn the Wings of Gold. Bowen will take a 15 day furlough before more training at Corpus Christi.
Marshall County Treasurer Oscar Olson of Varna said residents will likely receive tax statements by May 15 or June 1. The delay affects down state counties in Illinois as well. A State Supreme Court ruling allows the Department of Revenue to assess railroad properties and utility stock at 54 percent of value, up from 37 percent last year, but counties need two months to complete mailing after assessments. Some counties may see slight rate changes due to railroad reassessments, yet Marshall and Putnam counties have small railroad estates, minimizing impact. Olson attended a Springfield meeting with assessors and clerks to gather details on the tax statement process.
Eugene V Stadel son of Mr and Mrs John Stadel of Henry was promoted from second to first lieutenant in the Army. He is stationed at Camp Ellis near Lewistown TH where thousands train and he oversees dental supplies. Stadel was previously director of the Marshall Putnam Farm Bureau 4 F Club leader and is known in Marshall and Putnam Counties. He was commissioned at Camp Berkeley Texas March 31 1943 and transferred to Camp Ellis April 15. His wife, employed in Chicago, joined him after their marriage.
Miles Shirley Anne Miller daughter of Mr and Mrs Arthur Miller of Magnolia has been selected winner of the D A R award for Magnolia Township High School. She served as class president sophmore year vice president junior year and editor of the News Eye this year.
Aviation Cadet Edgar Kh. Putnam has completed basic flight training and begins advanced flying school at Luke Field in Phoenix Arizona.
Mrs Lyle Coolidge hosted a no host farewell for Evans Butler at their home last Thursday night. Butler reported for army service Monday morning. Guests included Evans Butler Loren Bryan Hampton Long and Lyle Coolidge with Mr and Mrs Verne Akright unable to attend due to illness.
A 1944 Marshall County Red Cross War Fund Drive update credits Louis Colehower of Wenona as chairman and reports county progress beyond its quota by 1866.50 dollars. Most townships meet or exceed targets. Saratoga trails slightly, Henry Township shows strong rural support, and many workers and residents are thanked for efforts.
Putnam County Illinois reaches its Red Cross fundraising quota surpassing the state fourth in the drive. Mrs. Howard Smith of McNabb, county chairman, received a Telegram from the St. Louis area office praising the surpassing of the chapter war fund goal. Total sent to Red Cross headquarters was 3210.87 against a 2600 quota with expectation of further increases.
The Marshall Putnam Bankers Association and the Sinois Bankers Association will award 15 cash prizes to 4 H and Future Farmers of America members for the best farm project records. Prizes range from 12 to 200, total 60, with judges evaluating neatness, size, efficiency, and improved production based on extension recommendations.

A congratulatory letter arrived today for Louis Colehower and the Marshall County Red Cross chapter from Venona Myrna regarding exceeding the 1944 War Fund goal. The regional director praises the chapter as the 12th in the state to go over quota and urges continued donations to support fighting men and victory bonds.

Henry Grade School board seats to be filled on Saturday April 8 with three expiring terms up for reelection. Dr BQ Dysart president Robert Ingels and PB Shaver seek new terms. Henry High School has four vacancies with four incumbents seeking reelection unopposed. No teacher contracts awarded yet for next year.
Sergeant Kenneth J Williams, son of Mr and Mrs Williams of Henry, is stationed at Fort Washington Maryland attending the Adjutant General's School. He will undergo eight weeks of training in Army administration procedures as announced by Stuart W Wright 1st Lieutenant AGD Public Relations Officer.
The Henry Theatre shows In His Side a Red Cross feature each night for a week with after show bottle collections. Mrs C O Duke and Mrs Emil Nilson lead the fundraising in surgical dressings uniforms and will be joined tonight by Henry Woman's Club representatives to pass the donation bottles.
Herschel Blazer of Aledo, superintendent of Illinois printing, visited Henry and Lacon to discuss the Republican primary slate led by Governor Dwight H. Green. He cites support for Lyons for U S Senator and Arnold Benson for secretary of state, with a statewide organization strong in Cook County under John Dempsey.
Granville youth Gordon Gordon Gordon Gordon Gordon Gordon Philip Gordon of Granville died in Italy on February 20 from wounds received in action two years four days after enlisting in the nation’s service. Survived by parents two brothers three sisters and other relatives in Granville and Chicago.
A meeting at the Farm Bureau building in Henry will discuss creating a canning center in Henry this year. Attendees include Roy Felé Ben Hauber Bruce Rauter Walter Duke Miss Iola School Mia Orla Kemper Marshall Putnam and I. H. Daubs from McNabb who led last year. Funds are available from the State Vocational Defense Council and a city official will assist in operations. McNabb plans to run a similar earning center again this year.
Northwestern University Evanston announces 169 Illinois students join 400 new men in the Navy V-12 training program. Among them is Henry boy Joseph Greenlee Meihsner. The V-12 program prepares students as prospective officer candidates with radio operator and midshipman training. Mrs Hastings confined to home with a severe void last week.
