A public speakers night in Springfield touched on Route 29 north of the city and county concerns. The Featured Speaker urged focus on jobs for Illinois residents, population growth, and services for the aging.
Miss Minnie Bickerman died early today at St Francis hospital Peoria. Funeral services will be at St Marys church Peoria Friday at 10 a m with Father Laurence Schumacher officiating. Visitation after 8 p m Thursday at Ries Mortuary with Rosary at 8 p m. Burial in Calvary Cemetery. She was 71 or 72, a graduate of Henry JIlgh School and Browns Business College. She worked at Holts East Peoria and Commonwealth Edison Chicago before retirement. Survived by Henry Bickerman Peoria brother and several nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by Fred Bickerman and three sisters Anna Barry Julia Lawsha and Gertrude Neuhalfen.
The Henry Jaycees sponsor an Easter Egg Hunt for children up to six years old at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Central and Waterworks parks. Prizes donated by local merchants include bowling, gift certificates, Easter baskets, toys, and more. Call 5092 before March to donate prizes.
Manuel Salas of Crystal City Texas will bring his crew of US asparagus cutters to Henry in two to three weeks to harvest on the Potter farm. Illinois directive barring foreign harvest workers alarms Rochelle Mendota DeKalb ward Belvidere growers who have depended on workers from Mexico and the British West Indies. The canning industry fears local employment will not meet harvest needs, threatening crop and packing plant employment.

Bruce K. Bauter announces March 25 through April 15 for the annual Salvation Army fund appeal in Henry. The drive supports local needs and state programs aiding unwed mothers, summer camp, families of prisoners, veterans, disaster relief, and rehabilitation services. Local committee members praise community support to fund humanitarian activities.
Roy L. French, longtime Sparland lumber yard manager at Allen Lumber, resigns to become a salesman for Georgia-Pacific Plywood. He will cover lumber dealers from Peoria south to Springfield, based out of Peoria office, with headquarters in Portland Oregon. He and his wife and two children plan to move south of Peoria. French has served as village clerk and Merchan ts association chair, and contributed a column Creative Lines to the News-Republican.
Henry Lodge No 119 announces a dinner meeting and stated meeting next Tuesday March 28 at 6:30 p m in the Henry Masonic judge rooms to conduct the third degree for a new candidate. All master Masons are invited to attend and witness the work of past masters.
Putnam and Henry grade school bands presented an entertaining program for the Henry Senachwine P T A meeting on March 15 in the high school auditorium. Directors Gerald Faye and Plymn Penock led eleven numbers. Ed Ransom chaired the business portion. An April nominating committee and advisory report were announced for the April 19 meeting at 7:30 p.m.
The Rt Rev Francis William Lichfield bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Quincy consecrated the new altar at St John’s Church last Sunday afternoon. Clergy and the congregation attended a reception in the American Legion building afterward. The bishop also visited St Francis Church Chillicothe earlier that day and administered Holy Confirmation to a class including Mrs Bruce K Bouter of Henry.
Alvie Gebhardt, noted basketball official from Peoria, will speak at the Henry athletic dinner on Tuesday April 4 at 6 30 p m in the Henry American Legion building attended by athletes from St Marys Henry grade school and Henry Senachwine high school. Local committee members include William Hoscheldt Francia Mc Evdy Max Aliird Ned Potter with Yatter as emcee. Gebhardt refereed Tri County games and Northwest Region NC AA tourney play and now officiates in the Missouri Valley conference in Cincinnati St Louis and other centers.
The St Marys Church Holy Week services run Monday March 27 through Easter Sunday with High Masses for specified individuals, confessions on Wednesday, institution of the Blessed Sacrament on Thursday, Masses for Good Friday and Holy Saturday, and Easter Sunday Masses at 8:00 and 10:00 a.m.
Union of Henry churches schedules Maundy Thursday 8 p m at Henry Methodist and Good Friday 1 30 to 3 p m at Presbyterian with speakers from four churches. Rev Darrell Williams leads Maundy Thursday. A fifth candidate for the Henry Consolidated Grade School board is Robert Bogner, a Whitefield township farmer, per Secretary James Tindall. Previously filed contenders include Royal Kays, Leo Quinn seeking re election, and Mrs. Jatin S Hunter and Charles Cooper.
Forty Hours Devotion at St. Josephs church began with the 8 o clock Mass Friday March 17 led by Rev Fr McCarthy CSV from Spalding Institute Peoria and drew strong attendance. The closing solemnity Sunday featured Act of Consecration Litany of the Saints and benediction with clergy and parishioners processing.
