County Legion posts discuss memorial plaque and oxygen tent
A Marshall County American Legion council meeting led by newly elected county commander Clarence Austinarno examined a bronze plaque honoring county veterans to be mounted at the courthouse. Floyd Robinson urged memorial plans while four posts agreed to proceed with the memorial and fund needs. An oxygen tent project was explored though equipment was incomplete. The gathering featured impersonations by Henry Senachwine boy and a lunch with sauerkraut and refreshments. The next county council meeting will be at Wenonah.

Clarence Clarence died at his home in Sparland on Tuesday March 16 1948 at 11 15 pm age 81 years ten months and days after a stroke the previous day He was born to William and Ita Clarence in Sparland area He married Minnie Rickey on October 31 and they lived in Saratoga Township He is survived by widow three sons Parland Ted of California and ne of Indiana two daughters Inez Hall of Henry and Ila Sordych of Chicago Twelve grandchildren and great grandchildren Two brothers Ian Fred preceded him in death Funeral services were held at ten o clock Friday at the Funeral Home with the Rev Gordon Downey and Benefiel singing The Old Rugged Cross and In the Garden at Sparland cemetery Willis Walter and George Rickey Charles de Strettarsatters attended the rites.

An appeal seeks B type blood donors for Herbert Schmitt of Putnam who faces a critical operation at St Margaret s Hospital on Tuesday March 23. Mrs. W. H. Baker Laid To Rest On Tuesday
Funeral services for Mrs. W. H. Baker 83 were held at Lindbloom Funeral Home. She died Sunday March 14 at St. Margaret’s Hospital Spring Valley after an operation. Surviving children include Lucinda Nora Ethel and Floyd with Bertha Parsons Cora predeceased. Six grandchildren and three great grandchildren listed along with siblings and nieces. The Rev. Donald Lemkau officiated with Miss Annis Quinn and Mrs. Ethel Benefiel as musicians. Interment in Henry City Cemetery with pallbearers named.

About 30 Cedar Point Telephone Company subscribers in Putnam County urged the Illinois Commerce Commission at Springfield to allow switching to Granville Telephone Company. They cite inadequate service and describe helping to build their own lines during recent snow and sleet outages. Tonica schools merge vote passes by wide margins in Tonica and Ashley precincts, with consolidation affecting districts 22, 75, 76, 77, 84, 87, and 88.
