Loren Nelson of Varna purchased a leading Duroc gilt at the Ernest A Johnson & Son sale in Prophetstown NL on January 25. Secretary B R Evans of the United Duroc Record association reported the gilt carries a fitter by Johnson's Leader, the top selling Duroc boar of 1949. Fifty one Duroc bred gilts sold in the sale averaging 174 dollars, marking a strong national sale.

Music instructor Geraldine Richmond dies in Route 88 crash
Lacon music instructor Geraldine Richmond known in Wyoming Camp Grove and Stark county died after her car left Route 88 near Camp Grove and crashed into a tree. She died at St Francis hospital from chest and body injuries about an hour after the 3 pm crash while returning from teaching. An inquest by Peoria County Coroner Chauncey Wood was held with State Officer Phil Endress testifying. Richmond, 57, a Knox College graduate who taught violin and piano, led a local band and taught about 40 private pupils. Surviving are three brothers Donald, Paul and Lyle. Funeral arrangements were announced for 2 pm Saturday at Ehringer and Son funeral home in Lacon.

Fred Bestold of Lacon was named county supervisor of assessments by the Marshall County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday the first ballot after applications were read. Six votes secured Bestold, with other contenders George Heininger Henry Kehlenbach J W Jesse and two withdrawn candidates. The office is in the former county judge’s room and Bestold’s background as county treasurer and property appraiser influenced the selection.
