Cpl Edwin Wabel youngest son of Mr and Mrs Earl Wabel of Saratoga reports rest in a hospital after breaking an ankle and being fitted up for work in the army. He trained with a medical unit in the States and then served overseas in England France and Holland as an air corps truck driver near Paris. He recalls seeing the Eiffel Tower Arc de Triomphe and other landmarks while moving through Europe. His brother Pfc Lawrence Wabel is stationed at Miami Beach after more than two years in the Pacific theater.
Chris Olsen of near Whitefield sold his 207 acre Whitefield farm to Roy Forney of Varna after an auction on March 20. Forney will operate the place next year and plans to move there later, with agents Frank Morgan of Henry and John Limits of Magnolia assisting the sale.
Gretchen Phillips, daughter of Mr and Mrs Philips of Varna, was chosen by the Varna Township High School senior class and faculty as the D A R good citizen award winner for the current school year. A full account and her photo will appear in next week’s issue.
Mr. and Mrs. J. W Exement who farmed in Saratoga Township for 40 years move to Bradford. They sold their farm years ago and Floyd Van Ostrand will operate it this year.
Auction notices across Henry County schedule sales from March 16 to March 22. Francis Keegan and Koehler lead public and administrator sales with multiple bidders and clerks, plus farm and estate auctions near Bradford and Henry.

She leaves her mother a sister and three brothers in Chicago. Funeral services were held in Chicago Wednesday at 9 am and burial followed in Henry City Cemetery.
Clergymen from five Henry churches announce a cooperative three hour Good Friday observance on March 30. The Methodist Presbyterian Christian Fundamental Bible Church and Henry Apostolic Tabernacle will join in a union service at the Presbyterian Church using the Seven Last Words from the Cross as the program basis. The service is divided into seven 25 minute periods with hymn scripture reading and prayer in each period.
Fire drills were held yesterday in the Henry Public School building and at St Mary's School under the supervision of John Perino of Spring Valley deputy State fire marshal. Officials planned future drills and an educational meeting for the public on Friday April 27 at the school auditorium with State Fire Marshal John Craig and a technician to address the meeting. Fire extinguishers in public buildings were inspected and renewed where needed.
Henry City Council on March 5 named the city election officials for Tuesday April 17. First Ward judges are Bert Newman Ralph Brown Ed Hennessey clerks Etta Rambo and Mrs Bruce Bauter. Second Ward judges Charles Bourdette John Lindgren Henry Melater clerks Mrs Walter Baldwin and Mrs Gorton Downey. Third Ward judges Elmer Deck Albert Haynes and YU Dusenberry clerks Mrs Clinton Friday and Mrs Ray Hunt.

Mrs Linn Downey received a letter from her son Private Wayland Downey who had landed in San Francisco on March 9. He was wounded in the Philippines six weeks earlier and now travels home aboard a Dutch ship. He lost his right leg above the knee, has a fractured hip and two shrapnel wounds, with his entire body in a cast. He writes he is in fine spirits and hopes to be near Henry so family can visit often.
Varna Rotary Club on March 13 presided by vice president Andrew Trulin with president absent. Billy Keinitz shared Navy service tales and Ben Moews discussed hybrid corn, showing farm reels and antique corn memorabilia. Guests included Kemnitz, Palm, Flesburg, Wolth, Wenk, Eddington, and Maagoon from Lacon.
Illinois State Highway department seeks bids to purchase and remove several buildings on the Route 29 right of way near Sparland. The Nightwonger property includes two houses and other structures. Sealed bids due March 29 at 11 am in the county highway office, Court House, Lacon.

Lieutenant Clark Keller son of Mr and Mrs Conrad Keller of Mc Nab b has reportedly participated in at least five bombing raids over Japan. After the Nagoya mission Allied photos showed fires and extensive damage at the Alchi aircraft Works Eloku plant. Keller, in the air corps since 1940, married Lillian Allen of Ballinger Texas on February 1 1943.
Marshall County faces a spate of robberies with at least four incidents in the past week. The largest hit was the Blue Ribbon Tavern in Henry, where $2,000 cash, twelve cases of whiskey, a radio, and a slot machine were stolen after forcing a basement door. Police linked prints to suspects but have not identified them. Other break ins occurred at LaRose Schumacher filling station, Sparland Fred Gehr, and Lacott Bud Wenz, with items stolen including ice cream, a suit, a watch, a ring, pennies, and papers. investigators believe separate offenders operated in each case.
Scouts of the Creve Coeur Council will run a March to April paper drive called the Eisenhower Campaign. Troops aim to collect at least 1000 pounds each, with rewards including a distinctive medal and a World War II shell casing for units averaging 1000 pounds per registered member. Individual scouts collecting 1000 pounds receive a medal with ribbon.
Melvin Klein, son of Mr and Mrs Fd Klein of Lacon and grandson of Mr Frank Wunder of Henry, serves with the Marines on Iwo Jima about 750 miles from home. In a brief letter he said he is well but time to write is short. This marks his second overseas period after prior service in the South Pacific and a furlough at home last summer.

On March 14 the Legionnaires and Auxiliary held their annual birthday party. They discussed a March 22 community dinner at the Farm Bureau building. The event featured tables, birthday cake, and coffee amid a well attended gathering.
