The News-Republican urges a big crowd to Henry for Dollar Day on Thursday March 21 1929. Merchants promise wide merchandise stock and large discounts across many stores to draw shoppers from surrounding areas and test home trading.
Marshall county is credited with forty five thousand five hundred ninety eight dollars as its share of the refund under state bond issue acts. The refund relates to hard road sections later incorporated into the state highway system. Only funds for roads built to state highway specifications and paid to contractors are available.
Mx and Mrs Russell Fulton of Chicago announce the birth of a 4 pound baby girl Wednesday morning at Charles Sherman’s home in Washburn. Mother and babe are fine. Mrs Sherman is grandmother and Mrs J M Bell is great grandmother. Mrs Fulton was formerly Miss Viola Rowe of this city.
At 1 30 Saturday afternoon fire destroyed the William Winterscheid farm home on Hennepin Prairie. The modern house burned completely with only a few pieces of furniture saved. Mrs Winterscheid was visiting her daughter in Michigan at the time. Mr Winterscheid had been ill with flu and was alone when the fire broke out. He held some insurance.
Mrs. Daniel Vail a long-time Henry county resident died March 9 at her home after a short illness from pneumonia complications at age 50. She leaves a husband four children and several relatives. funeral services were held at her residence led by Rev G W Kinsman with Eastern Star rites and burial in city cemetery.
The Kiwanis Club enjoyed a program featuring Miss Johnston and Miss Bullington of Metamora with piano accompaniment praised by all. State Superintendent Francis Blair will speak on Lincoln at the open house in the school gymnasium. About 150 dinners expected. Lyon Karr of Verona and Illinois Bankers' Association vice president will address the club on March 21.
The township central committee met and organized selecting E. B. Wright as chairman A. E Ertle as secretary and T E Hennessey as treasurer for the coming year Members plan to meet soon to outline plans for township and city elections.
Park McAlister and family have moved from the farm into the Pranle Ganzer house on Carroll street.
The revival, postponed due to illness, starts Sunday with five nights at three churches. Rev. G W Kinsman, Rev D W Madden, and Rev P F Roberts preach nightly at Presbyterian, Christian, and Methodist churches through next Wednesday and Sunday. A union Lord's Supper will be held Thursday night at the Methodist church with elders and deacons assisting.
In Wenona last Friday Wenona edged Henry High 16 to 15 in a tense district tournament first game. Henry High’s defense kept it close early, but Wenona wore down the foes and took the win on late free throws. Wenona then fell to Lostant in the semifinals while Minonk captured the district championship.
The Christian Church Missionary Society met at Mrs. Francis Knight's home with Mrs. Clift leading prayer. Mrs. Bracken presented Forty-five Years in India and Mrs. Knight shared I Am World Call the March monologue. Treasurer Mrs. Phillips announced the annual apportionment raised to the last quarter. Fifteen members attended.
Sparland couple George Baggs and Zelma ter were wed Saturday evening at the bride’s mother Mrs. Charles Kincaid home. The ceremony was performed by John Adams. The Baggses will reside in the Kincaid home with Mr. Baggs planning to work the farm for Henry Schupp and the bride staying in Hopewell township this summer.
The twelfth community meeting series in Marshall and Putnam counties is finished with cooperation from Illinois Farmers Institute Marshall Putnam Farm Bureau and Marshall Putnam Home Bureau. Speakers Mrs Ernest Giehl and M G Buskirk highlighted youth 4 H work and farmer self reliance.
Henry sees a brief spell of springlike weather with temperatures reaching 67 degrees on Tuesday and 62 on Wednesday, lifting spirits and inviting outdoor activities for locals. A severe snow storm in the Rockies caused marooned small towns and highways buried under up to three feet of snow.
Land owners tenants and others outside the city are invited to Henry City Hall on Thursday March 21 at 2 7 for a meeting of the fire truck committee. Elmer Quinn Charles Read L F Boyle and a Henry Fire representative will discuss the feasibility of buying a fire truck for use outside city limits and request a large turnout.
When people return home from their winter sojourn in the south they are warmly greeted by friends. This week a notable visitor, Mr. A. Robin, was sighted in the city as a forerunner of Spring. The sighting brings glad tidings to Henryites and is credited with spreading cheerful news.
Leslie Klein has sold his interest in the Hoff and Klein plumbing business to partner William Hoff who will operate the business alone. The deal is completed and Klein has not announced definite future plans.
Sunday morning between 8 and 9 o clock the home of Mr and Mrs George Mattern nine miles west of Henry was wrecked by fire. Neighbors and friends rushed to aid but only furniture was saved as the two story frame house burned rapidly. The structure carried partial insurance.
Mrs. Sarah Elizabeth Fountain, wife of James Fountain, died Sunday March 10 at 11 30 a m at her home on School Street after long illness. She was born January 11 1855 in Illinois and lived here 74 years. her survivors include her husband two brothers and several sisters. Funeral services were held Tuesday at the M E church with Rev Kinsman officiating and burial in Henry Cemetery beside her daughter Luella who had predeceased her.
Arlene Bush Keffeler, born August 7 1900 in this city, died February 18 in Kansas City Missouri. She leaves her husband Anthony G Keffeler and son Robert five. also mother Della M Bush sisters Mae and Mrs Joe Finnegan and brother Harry. Funeral held at St Mary's church with Requiem Mass and burial at Mt Calvary. Catholic rites comforted her final hour. Burial procession included Jacquinot Spies Messing Nevens Hestroffer Beck and others from Catholic Printing delegation.
The D A R were pleasantly entertained at Mrs Coggeshalls home on March 9. The meeting preceded the state conference to be held in Aurora this month. Mrs Dewey Mrs Duke and Mrs Starliper plan to attend and return with plans for the coming year.
Carol Bodeen, son of Mr and Mrs, left this morning for an aviation study program after years as a chauffeur on the White Star bus between the city and Peoria. The plan includes both theoretical and practical flight work. Local families, including Elmer Hunt and the Hannums, hosted a Sunday gathering with relatives from Peoria and Grand Rapids.
Voters cast about 71 ballots across parties in a low turnout city primary. No major contests appeared in mayor, clerk, or treasurer races, with minor nominations and write-ins shaping precinct committee positions in wards one through three.
Miss Mary McKee state 4-H club leader for girls will visit Henry March 22 to conduct training schools for club leaders at the Home Bureau office starting at 10 o clock. Last year 18 standard 4-H girls clubs were organized in Marshall Putnam with 160 members. Standards require five members an adult leader regular program and officers. Achievements clubs must hold six meetings exhibit demonstrate and 75 percent completion and final report with an achievement day at year end. Projects offered include clothing meal planning preparation and baking and canning.
Democrats in caucus named candidates for township election to be held Tuesday in April. George Heininger chaired. E B Wright acted as replacement. Nominees include Howard Stoner for Justice of the Peace Evan Sleater for preventee nstable Vincent Mercian for School Trustee district No 31. A seven member township central committee was appointed to fill vacancies.
George Wallace youngest son of Mr and Mrs James Wallace died Tuesday afternoon after several weeks illness at age 24. Funeral services were held at St Josephs church with the K of C farewell service. A complete obituary will appear next week.
