The region faced a northeast gale and unseasonal blizzard Saturday and Sunday, dropping seven to ten inches of snow on the level with wind gusts 25 to 30 mph. Drifts two to six feet blocked highways while rail service on the Chicago Peoria line ran 15 minutes to 30 minutes late. State officials urged motorists to stay off roads as many highways were impassable and plows worked nonstop. Some travelers abandoned autos and sought shelter in farmhouses. Grain and plant life concerns arose, but crop damage was not expected to be serious.

Illinois River traffic opens during past week
