Report outlines caucuses for Democratic and Republican parties in Henry. Mayor Fred A. Ford seeks re-election along with likely aldermen and city officials. City improvements funded by WPA and water system progress cited as broad support factors.
Mrs R C Tomlinson of McNabb has been added this week as a regular correspondent for the Henry News-Republican. Her weekly newsletter will cover McNabb and Quaker Lane communities and appear as a standard feature of the paper. Previously she contributed from the Quaker Lane area.
Miss Hazel Marie Hoyle and Walter Curley Boyle wed at the Methodist Episcopal Church in McNabb with 150 guests. The ceremony featured a white satin lace gown, pink and blue bridesmaids, and music by Miss BerNice Whitney. The couple, graduates of Swaney and the University of Illinois, will live in Hennepin after April 3.
The Bureau County Board met in Inceton to audit a 1560 bill for deputy protection during the Wisconsin Bridge & Son Co project. Union pickets halted work at Putnam and LaSalle counties, forcing a shift to Bureau County where progress was made, saving Putnam from footing the entire cost. The article notes Bureau County’s financial resilience and mentions the Public Library being open Wednesdays and Saturdays until five.
Sparland High School’s Hilltoppers, under Coach L J K Wallace, went 18 wins and 8 losses in the regular season and tied Toluca for the Illinois Valley Conference title. To many college mentors they’ve attracted attention, signaling strong future prospects for Sparland’s players.
A Springfield bill exempting sales of water by private and municipal utilities from the three percent state sales tax will save the city of Henry about two hundred dollars yearly. The measure, now sent to the Senate, taxes electric current but exempts water, touted as a life necessity. Henry also stands to receive a state refund for water taxes paid under the old act ruled unconstitutional by Justice Clyde I Stone.
In a Democratic caucus at Lacon city hall B F Shafer Lyric Theatre proprietor was nominated for mayor with Arthur Chauwitz as city clerk Helen Anske treasurer and aldermen named for each ward Wayne Howard Fred Boers Rudolph Danhof John Allen Andrew Baldwin Morris Dynn. In the Republican caucus Doug las Burlingame incumbent mayor pro tem was nominated for mayor Earl Sharick for city clerk Mark Green treasurer and aldermen Walter Holsinger James McGowan Louis Wenz Oliver Ely Emory Hutzell Burlingame will succeed Mayor Grieves who is wintering in Florida and will not seek reelection.
Wesley Anderson will retire this spring as Wheatland Township supervisor in Bureau County. Walter Rosenquist is the Republican nominee for county board. Other Wheatland Republican nominees include Harry Bean for town clerk Howard Anderson for assessor William O Neill for constable and Leon Fosdick for justice of the peace. Wheatland Township lies northwest of Henry in Bureau County and is half the size of a full township. It is entirely rural and has no residents on the pauper list, a distinction held by a single township in the county.
Tonight at Henry Gymnasium the Bureau Independents host Steele's Independents in a basketball game at 7:80. Steele features the five Steele brothers Hook Jim Stub Toad and Wart with Coach William Bennington Leo Smith and Bob McBride.
Clarence O. Duke president of the Henry High School Alumni Association calls tonight’s meeting of officers to plan a minstrel show and dance in the second week after Easter. Mrs. Merrill W. Holmes of Bradford serves as secretary. Plans to be announced soon.
Local WPA planted ornamental trees along Henry Fall. Youths have damaged several trees showing disregard for public property. Authorities monitor the vandals and will prosecute if misdeeds continue.
Edward Burleson died Tuesday at 12 30 a m at St Luke s hospital in Chicago after a few days with pneumonia He was husband of Olive Burleson who on March 1 became adviser of the Marshall Putnam Home Bureau Funeral services and burial were held this Thursday morning at Maroa Illinois
Master-in-chancery H V Graybill sold 32 acres of the John J Moritz estate near Benson at 275 an acre, a new high in post low mood prices, the sale approved in Eureka Circuit Court. Purchaser John Schierer owns adjacent land. Earlier highs included Leonard Miller to John Bachman 77 acres at 200, and Charles Ripple to John Woelfle 42 acres at 200, west of Secor and in Oho Township.
After a warm spell with temperatures above 60 degrees Marshall and Putnam counties enjoyed near springlike weather. Residents planned early gardens while tourists and locals enjoyed outdoor activity and river views from the Henry bridge. Fishermen anticipate a strong open season on the Illinois River and lakes based on last year’s success.
Newman's defeated Hunter's in three straight games led by Tom Cain 156 Norbert Schwartz 133 and Gene Clift 132. High scorers for Hunter's were Bill Greek 125 Joe Thompson 111 and Charles Brown 111. Ericson's won the first game against Tindall's then Tindall's captured the next two by slim margins. A weekly prize of 1 dollar for top week score runs March 11 to March 17. Standings through February 26 show Ericson's 23-4 Newton's 20-10 Newman's 20-7 Tindall's 16-11 Watercott's 12-18 Hunter's 7-23 Kroger's 5-22.
The Henry WPA crew spreads gravel on badly rutted streets and alleys damaged by spring thaws. Gravel is hauled from a city gravel pit near Riviera Park, cleaned up for excavation, with trucking costing about 20 cents per load. Trucks are owned by Louis Hank and Ed Miles.
Public sale notices list two events a March 13 livestock sale at J T Dauber Sales Barn Mainstreet Henry and a March 20 public auction at Belsly Hardware Iacon Illinois.
Marshall County Board of Supervisors met in Lacon with three retiring members J W Bogner Glen Harper and Amzi Orrison. County auditor M B Coker praised finances noting 1936 tax levy 4189249 and collections 39203889 with 2689156 uncollected.
Burton Barker 44 died at 9 30 Wednesday morning at Elgin State hospital after a short illness with lobar pneumonia. He lived in Aurora and worked at the Burlington railroad yards for more than 15 years. He is survived by his wife and daughter Agnes a sister Mrs Clar ence Schneider of Henry and brothers Carl Barker of near Bradford and Albie Barker of Princeton. Funeral services 2 o'clock Friday at Burkhart Funeral Home Sandwich NL with burial in Sandwich cemetery. Mr and Mrs Schneider of Henry will attend.
Marshall Lodge I O O F hosted the regular monthly meeting of the lodges in District No 30. A class of candidates was initiated with the Granville degree staff. A social hour with lunch and smoker followed the degree work. Members from Hennepin Granville Magnolia Wenona and Henry attended.
