Farm Bureau Leaders Seek Congress Support

Ninety eight farmers from eighty eight Illinois counties traveled to Washington to urge Congress to back Farm Bureau positions on farm labor marketing and export markets. They pressed for national legislation tailored to agriculture and quick remedies to prevent crop losses from strikes and boycotts. They urged expansion of research on corn blight and supported responsible pollution controls and fair practices under the Agricultural Fair Practices Act. The eight annual Farmers To Washington program was sponsored by the Illinois Agricultural Association and state Farm Bureau.

Four Positions Open On Sparland School Board

Four seats on the Sparland Unit District No 3 school board are up for election April 10. Filing ends March 19 with petitions obtainable from secretary Lloyd Davis Jr. Seats include two full terms and additional partial terms for residents of Whitefield Saratoga LaPrairie Steuben Township and others.

David D. Gill manager of General Telephone Company of Illinois announced the 1971 directories for Henry subscribers would be mailed this week. The cover features phone styles and colors and listings are now interlocked alphabetically by name. Call the office if not received by March 22.

Mallards Open Practice Ahead of Spring Baseball

The Henry Mallards begin spring workouts with coach Robert Newell in the gym on March 15 as they prep for a home opener against Princeville on April 5. They tied Toluca and Putnam County for first in the Tri-County Conference last fall at 7-1, 7-3 overall.

Assessors Attend 13th Property Tax Workshop at Peoria

Manock and three county township assessors attended the 13th annual workshop for assessing officials at the Hotel Pere Marquette in Peoria. The three day program by Property Assessment Institute includes expert instruction and ends with an exam toward becoming a Certified Illinois Assessing Officer. Lio Haas of Bloomington is chairman.

Mustangs Attend 4-H Horse Clinic at Cambridge

The Marshall Putnam Mustangs 4-H Horse and Pony Club joined a Henry County 4-H Clinic in Cambridge. Steve Jesse tied for high score in judging with three others. Sue Jesse placed in the top ten. An Illinois Wesleyan University July instructional program will be hosted with state and county officials aiding.

James Cummins Takes Over The Paint Store

Mr and Mrs James Cummins of Henry become the new owners of The Paint Store this Monday. Dick Brown remains as a contractor with the store and Cummins runs his plastering business. The staff stays intact and the Henry location offers O'Brien paints wallpaper and household items with a wallpaper sale now underway.

Henry Grade Board Extends Contracts and Approves Funds

Henry Community Consolidated Grade School Board met March 8 1971 approving minutes payroll and bills. The treasurer reported funds across multiple accounts and a 20000 transfer to Education Fund. Several non tenure teachers received contract extensions for 1971 72. A bus request for Drum and Bugle Corps was denied and election judges were named. The meeting adjourned to March 15.

City Buys Barker Property In Henry Harbor Area

The city completed purchase of William Barker river-front property adjoining Henry Harbor. Checks totaling 5000 were prepared for Barker siblings Robert of Clanton and Florence Hilton of Pekin, with legal fees 15 and taxes 61.54 approved as part of price.

Tractor Safety School Begins

A three night Tractor Safety School sponsored by Vocational Agriculture and Extension Service runs March 16 23 and 30 at Henry High School starting at 630 pm. The course meets federal child labor exemption rules requiring a 10 hour program and exams for youths under 16 who work off farm. 1970 Marshall County Census Highlights Population Shift

The 1970 Marshall County population was 13,302, down 0.2 percent from 1960. State population reached 11,113,976, rising 102 percent from 1960. White residents totaled 13,289 with 999 percent of the count, while 1,067 children under five and 3,483 ages 5 to 17 were recorded.

Henry Red Cross Drive Underway in Henry District
