Rutland district school trustees meet to discuss expansion and state recognition for the Wenona area school. Local residents question bus routes and preschool needs as the board weighs moving the administration to Minonk or Wenona and plans a March vote.
The Pantagraph quotes Roscoe Ball of Verona as saying the Rutland to Wenona petition passed 4 to 2 after a secret ballot vote. Ball notes two opponents were Ray Litchfield and Emory Johnson. Viron Gustafson moved the petition. no second halted motion until Ball seconded it. Merger effective July 1 1955 with potential detachment before then.
The Republican central committee was informed that Congressman Harold Velde recommends Bayard W. Wright for acting postmaster of Lacon Illinois. A copy of Velde's letter to the assistant postmaster general and a secretary's note explain the veteran status advantage in appointments. Wright, a Veterans Administration employee in Schenectady, was unavailable for comment.
William Spicer of Sparland was chosen by James Leonard Shelton to receive a $50 cash award from the Henry merchants drawing. Mrs Spicer attended to claim the prize as Jim Hurd Bill Hoscheidt led the drawing with Charles Williams operating the sound setup.
Henry Rotary club president Ray Hunt has arranged a party including members, ladies, and guests to travel by bus to Peoria next Monday evening March 14. The Caterpillar Tractor company will host a dinner and plant tour with Wallace Carlson as evening program chairman.
The Ottawa chapter of the National Farm Loan Association reports a strong year ending December 31 1954 with long term loans totaling 522 800 and new loans 502 600 in value. Total stock investments reach 175 130 with reserves of 207 345 28, reflecting solid finances and growth. Officers include Elmer McCormick president John Garvin vice president Earl Anderson director and Clarence Held director along with other local officers.
Henry city council assisted Bruce Brown on a residential property issue near River Street by addressing a tree and fence on public street. A letter will be sent to owner Roy Hill requesting removal, and Brown will lease for street improvements funded by the city with white rock materials. Aldermen plan an on the net conference with Brown Saturday morning. Also notice Dr Earl Torell announces new public office hours 7 pm to 9 pm starting March 14 at 314 Edward Street K of C building.
Russell Glover was named Monday night by the city council to serve as superintendent of streets. He will receive a beginning salary of 225 dollars a month and his appointment runs until the end of the fiscal year on May 2, 1955, when annual appointments will be made. The city seeks an auditor to perform the annual audit of the city’s books in compliance with state law. Spencer Lorton of Cowden, who has audited the books for two years, is unavailable due to trouble with the federal government.
Henry City Treasurer Gale Warner presented balances of city funds to the March council meeting. The general fund shows 6541.60 with bills paid. water fund 2721.63. motor fuel 1858. special water 272.36. special fire 198.81. special swimming pool 418.74. general swimming pool 399.64. band account 200.00. police fund 180.20.
McNabb Lutheran Church celebrates its 60th anniversary with Lenten services from March 17 to 20 led by Rev Edward A Hansen of the Lutheran Bible Institute. A special Sunday program includes a fellowship dinner, reminiscences, and singing after services. The church tower and grounds are noted landmarks as the congregation reflects on its Danish heritage and community aging.
Henry residents will vote on three issues April 19 in city elections. Aldermen for three wards, a daylight saving time referendum for the next two years, and a proposal to grant council power to authorize library building expansion at Central Park. Polling places: Ward 1 City Hall, Ward 2 Henry Bradess, Ward 3 W. W. Dewey depot office area.
Henry post 323 commander Vince Cofold asked the city council to use Central and Waterworks parks for the Legion sponsored Fourth of July events. The council approved the request and the celebration will run on July 2, 3 and 4.
Engineers from Peru Illinois J Chamilin and Michael Kenny visited Henry Street to survey downtown and depot districts for planned street lighting and sidewalks. Accompanied by Mayor F Klein and city officials, they presented a preliminary cost study while noting possible reductions for cost considerations.
Henry may require a user fee for the dumping grounds to fund supervision and maintenance. A city council committee is considering the plan after reports of waste spilling and ground leveling costs, noting other towns charge for access and aiming to curb careless dumping on city land.
Twenty two fox hunters joined the Camp Grove Sports men’s club for a Sunday hunt in Stark county near Lawn Ridge Valley township. They covered one square mile due to hunter shortage. next Sunday they plan to extend into LaPrairie township along Route 88 from Lao Prairie road to Lawn Ridge with meet points at Camp Grove 9 30 and Smiths Garage Lawn Ridge 10 00.
The Sparland Adult Farmers' class resumes its tenth meeting on Thursday night March 10 at 7 30 at LaPrairie grade school. Dr Grant of Wyoming and Dr McCully of Lacon return to discuss keeping livestock healthy and the latest in disease prevention and cure.
William Kelley of Princeton will fill the pulpit at Henry Presbyterian Church this Sunday March 13. He serves as moderator of the Henry church during a period of pulpit vacancy.
Wilbur Plager of the Iowa Swine Producers association will speak at a meat hog demonstration at Magnolia-Swaney high school at 7 30 pm Tuesday March 22. His talk includes live hogs on the hoof and dressed carcasses with slides. Harold Boucher of the Hampshire Swine Registry Peoria will explain the certified meat hog program.
Clarence Stansell of McNabb president of the Marshall Putnam Fair association. Halsey Mon ier of Snarland secretary and treasurer attended the state meeting at Springfield. They were joined by Clinton Lundgren Magnolia and Louis Hofer Henry department superintendents. They contracted with the George Flijnt organization of Chicago for free act attractions for the 1955 Wrars Han Pooraomtatr. MP officials booked attractions including the Trana World Auto Daredevils for Friday night during the fair.
Marshall Putnam Woman's clubs present a 15 numbers program at Toluca High School auditorium 2 p m Sunday March 27. Proceeds fund summer music camp for two students. last year Diane Kief and Keith Bell attended. Music committee chaired by Mrs Clyde Courtney arrays local club members. Each county club contributes one program number. no admission charge but a free will offering.
The Mid-County adult farmer and homemaking classes culminate with a family night on Monday March 14 at Varna High School. Activities begin 6 30 PM with a potluck supper, each family bringing a dish and service, followed by planned recreation for attendees and their families.
Charles Wabel of Eureka, brother of James Wabel of this city, died Tuesday morning. Funeral services will be held in Eureka Thursday afternoon followed by interment at Magnolia. A complete obituary will be published next week.
Henry city council granted 50 year franchises Monday to Illinois Central Telephone and Illinois Bell Telephone. The agreements allow growth and borrowing to improve service, with Henry gaining six free phones and additional fixtures as usage rises. A. C. Hawley attended for Illinois Central. local manager Bryan Williams was unable to attend.
