Johnson, sexton at the Johnson City cemetery, developed a stove thaw technique to dig graves in frozen ground. A modified cream-can tank and fuel supply heat a buried pipe system to thaw down to about 14 inches, allowing four foot graves with minimal mud, despite skepticism from motorists and neighbors.
Members of the Bureau gather for a drive led by Neal and the Ins General sales staff as the New Persia Drive Farm Bureau reports progress and collections through February with Mitten to date exceeding prior totals.
Sparland officials plan talks with Steuben Township Supervisor W. S. Ridde this month about using the town hall for meetings and possible remodeling. Mayor Lyle Schupp and trustees will be present, with concerns over a new meeting venue and a potential bargain with the township. The board also discussed 20 mph speed signs on North Center street and locating a garbage dump, urging Laconite Barnett to stop dumping at the town dump near the Catholic cemetery.
About 40 residents gathered Friday night at Hopewell town hall for an open discussion on a blacktop road in the township. Proposals included connecting the Tax school corner to Washburn via a direct north route, with long range plans to cross the township and link with the Lacon Hennepin road for surfaced connections between Henry and areas south and east.
Alderman Robert Davis was brought home Saturday from St. Margaret's hospital in Spring Valley after falling on the ice in front of his home the previous Monday. He will wear a cast for six to eight weeks and be confined to his home for three weeks.
Read Brothers Henry hardware and implement firm purchased the Mallard Motor company buildings on Third street near the Henry depot Francizg Read and his brother Edgar own the firm. The building was sold to Richard Kapraun who built it years ago and has been leased to Mallard Motor for years. The Crocker Implement building in the same block remains unaffected.
Funeral services for John Umphress of this city will be held Thursday at 2 pm at Henry Methodist Church with Rev Darrell Williams officiating. Interment in Henry City cemetery with Masonic rites by Henry Lodge AP AM. He died March 4 1958 after an extended illness at St Margaret's hospital Spring Valley. Survived by wife Margaret Whitaker and three sons Fayne Raymond Dwight, plus grandchildren and 10 siblings. An obituary will be published next week.
Dr A F Tochalauski of Henry has filed nominating petitions for the Henry grade school board of education. Leo Quinn Lawrence Rowe and Royal Kays also filed petitions with Board Secretary J Tindall. Three members are to be elected for three years. deadline March 21. Quinn and Rowe seek re election. Robert Dewey retires. High school board candidates Elmer Lord Alvin Foster and Jesse Phillips also filed petitions for three year terms, with petitions due March 21 to secretary A Ernest Rose.
Saratoga township aims to complete its second blacktop road under a bond funded program by season's end. Previous work covered nine miles in 1957 and included routes from Camp Grove to Whitefield line and from the Howes estate toward Klein land. The remaining three and a half miles near Murphy land will finish the across township road, with other cross-township and aid roads also in progress. The piece notes plans to shift Murphy road toward state and federal aid and critiques delay in Western avenue development connecting Henry, Streator, and other towns.
eastern links from Dwight to Galesburg form a route with Route 66 and Route 88 connections. Township equipment purchases last year include an $11,000 Seaman tiller and rollers to finish three oil coats. Road maintenance continues after blacktop, with bond funds and motor fuel tax revenue funding about forty to fifty percent of the current road work.
Equipment at Camp Grove keeps most road machinery in a quonset garage across from Camp Grove State Bank. Commissioner Salisbury and his son Robert perform most maintenance, including overhaul work on truck motors, with Robert noted for farm mechanics excellence. Salisbury serves a third term as road commissioner. Murphy is in a second term as supervisor.
Henry Senachwine high school students qualified for the state music contest in Macomb. Allen Quinn won first in vocal solo and Patsy Boyle first in baton twirling. Other entrants included Carol Mattern Ruth Ann Abright Allen Quinn Ronnie Foster Eldon Daniels and Eugenia Morse with accompanists Mrs Lee Titcomb Mia Lawrence Daniels and Eugenia Morse.
Forty Hours Devotion at St Mary's church starts Sunday March 16 with Rev Joseph Wolvers pastor of Sacred Heart parish Rutland conducting. Masses on Monday and Tuesday will be at 6 and 8 am and devotions at 7 30 pm on Sunday Monday and Tuesday with closing Tuesday evening March 18.
The American Legion Fast S22 of Henry sponsors a smoker and fish fry in their new hall on Saturday evening March 8 beginning at five o'clock. Leo Smith Laurence Newman Bud Barker Leonard Ries and Tom Clark handle arrangements and ticket sales. A large public gathering is expected and all are invited.
Mrs John Curry and her infant son arrived home last Thursday from Peoria hospital and are resting at their residence north of Sparland.
