With ice thick as 2 inches and a strong wind, he fled upstairs to a bed with a tied boat, waited for help per a WHO radio broadcast, and watched water rise a foot each hour. Neighbors Mason and Snyder eventually reached him after a 9 mile ice trek, marking the worst flood in 60 years.
