Otto Paulsen woke about 3:00 a.m. Sunday to heavy smoke and flames in his south Steuben Township dwelling. He escaped with a few clothes, leaving the house and contents to burn. A wallet with money and canned meat were lost. fog hindered warning others. The Paulsen family operates two farms and others were away.

Funeral for Hazel Klein Held After Pneumonia Death
Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon for Hazel Klein 41 who died Saturday at her sister Mrs George Efferdings Putnam home from pneumonia. Services were at her aunt Miss Bag eys Henry home and at the M E church with Rev D W Madvering and Rev J A Johnson assisting. Casket bearers included Eugene Bacon Frank Eckard Jr Lloyd Wheel and George Wheeler James Ransom Jr Bert Sparling. The body was taken to Allegan Michigan for interment after a graveside service by Rev F J Fethers. She was born June 14 1890 at Sparland daughter of Peter D and Clara Corney Klein and lived in Marshall county Oklahoma Michigan and Kansas City before returning to Putnam. She leaves two brothers Marvin Klein Charleston Kansas Floyd Klein Alle gan Michigan three sisters Mrs Melvin Myers Youngstown Ohio Mrs George Efferding Putnam and Beulah Klein Grand Rapids Michigan and several nieces nephews and relatives.

The Oglesby plant of the Marquette Cement company received the largest single order for Portland cement in state history from Illinois for 2,500,000 barrels at 1.44 dollars per barrel. Indiana awarded 200,000 barrels to the same plant. The Alpha company of LaSalle won 700,000 barrels from Illinois. Shipments will be from Peru by barge, ensuring hundreds of jobs for months.
