Henry Organized Drive Boosts Scout Booster Effort

Henry hosts a Tuesday dawn fundraising drive organized by the Boy Scouts of America to support a local cause. Led by Henry civic groups and six captains, crews will solicit donations with a $200 goal. kickoff breakfast at Peoples Cafe precedes the event, chaired by A. Lindbloom.

Missing in Action Dick Sivell in World War II

War Department reports Private Richard J. Sivell serving in the Philippines at the time of Corregidor's surrender on May 7 1942 listed as missing in action while awaiting Japanese POW lists. Born September 1919 he enlisted September 1940 trained at Rantoul Lowry Field Savannah and served as a bombardier with the 27th Bomb Group departing San Francisco November 7 1941 for the Philippines.

Putnam Farmer Delivers Scrap Iron for Local Salvage Drive

Putnam farmer Martin Kapraun brought a wagonload of scrap iron to Henry store as part of a town wide salvage effort. Walter Duke, Henry hardware merchant, helps unload the load from the wagon. The iron came from the Kapraun family barn and was sold to Orrin Turner, Henry salvage dealer, who has gathered over a hundred tons in the current campaign. Most iron originated from local farms.

Corporal Raymond D French Graduates to Officers’ Candidate School

Corporal Raymond D French son of Mr and Mrs Guy French of Putnam has completed preparatory school and training at Fort Sill Oklahoma He was inducted February 11 1942 at Camp Grant and now attends Officers Candidate School Class 27 at Fort Sill He was an assistant farm adviser in Champaign County before enlistment and married Betty Ann Somers on December 23 1941 in Lawton Oklahoma.

Henry Boy Scouts Drive Wartime Service in Henry

Henry Boy Scout Troop No 88 reports weeks of war effort work. They collected 6,524 pounds of paper and about 4,000 pounds of magazines from Henry citizens and disposed of them for war benefit. Scouts funded 5 dollars to Recoss and aided scrap salvage and patrol duties after the Lacon tornado.

The 1941 financial report shows Andrew Meydian, township road commissioner, receiving 109.50 for shoveling show and 302.00 in wages, for services tendered to Mr. Merchant in 1940. Two warrants issued in 19 but not shown until 1941.

The Henry family, Mr and Mrs T E Hennessey, report three sons serving in the U S Army and Air Force. Corporal Harold F Hennessey, at Jefferson Barracks Missouri, enlisted May 28 1941. Private Paul F Hennessey of Albuquerque Air Base New Mexico enlisted January 6 1942 after training. Sergeant Thomas W Hennessey drafted August 18 1941 stationed at Camp Robinson Arkansas.

Henry Boys Before County Court In Marshall County

Two Henry youths William Prather and Ralph Brown faced a county court hearing after several days in jail for break in and stealing from Henry school and residents. Judge Donald Gregg presided as State's Attorney Robert A Barnes prosecuted. cases were continued with likely leniency for Prather and possible transfer for Brown to a farm or institution. Others, Joe Malone and Clifford Anderson, were jailed on related charges and bound over to the Marshall County Grand Jury.

Applicants for sugar ration on registration day

Applicants for sugar ration must bring War Ration Books when filling applications at the charity board. They should know last year’s canning total, remaining amount, and planned canning for this year. The Henry deputy sugar board meets 1:00 to 3:20 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays at Henry City Hall, with extra registrars added due to high demand. Last Friday the board functioned with several fill‑ins and registered 152 families on Wednesday of this week.

Henry Thiel 33 of Henry, a Jehovah’s Witness, refused induction and was taken to Peoria for trial on draft evasion charges. Indictment followed a Quincy federal hearing. he had earlier sought conscientious objector status but was denied. Maximum penalty on conviction could reach three years in prison.
