R M Barnes a prominent attorney and colonist of Lacon Horner is proposed for the State museum board. David V Breen of Lacon is named for public administrator of Marshall County subject to confirmation by the State Senate.
CCC camp to be established in Henry Illinois will cooperate with local farmers in soil conservation demonstrations within small watersheds. Work focuses on agronomic engineering forestry and land practices tailored to each farm with farmer cooperation key to success. Sixty boys are at Henry with aim to reach 200 by June 20 and the site may move after demonstrations are set.
The Hutchins building on Second Street in Henry will house a modern automobile garage after recent sale to Leo Geitner and extensive improvements. The site will feature greasing, painting, fender work and daily equipment with Ed Bogner, Russell Chance, Harold Barry and others set to manage the repair department and new car operations.
Henry council approved a special fire tax of one and a half mills for the coming year to raise about 1200 dollars. The revenue funds new equipment including a 23 hose, a new nozzle, tires for the fire truck, a pumper with cover, and other gear. The measure passed 2 unanimous, aligning with voters who authorized the tax for the first year and allowing continuation up to two mills in subsequent years.
Preparations proceed to raise the body of Domenic Valesano, 77, from the Toluca mine shaft using an engine, winch, and sinking bucket. Peter Proctor leads a five man rescue team with oxygen gear, safety lamps, and gas blowers, while a decision to proceed hinges on insurance and safety concerns.
Henry City officials report near completion of pool improvements for the year including painting bath house and fence and new diving boards. Receipts indicate the pool is paying for itself with good patronage expected due to Henry’s visitors and health department approval.
A. B. Child, proprietor of Child & Son Service Station, was injured Monday afternoon while guiding a car onto a grease rack. The driver’s foot slipped, pinning him between the car and drums of grease. his right leg fractured below the knee and his other limb bruised. He was taken to Henry Hospital where the fracture was reduced and he rests easily.
Henry city council approved a $150 contribution toward a two day patriotic celebration on July 3 and 4. The event, sponsored by Henry post 323 American Legion, will feature a school band contest with at least twelve bands, baton twirling, free acts, boat races replaced, and the traditional fireworks. Central Park will host carnival activities with cooperation from Lepton posts and possible service men parade.
Sparland School Band under Arthur Blocher presents the first Summer Concert Tuesday night June 18 at eight o'clock. The program features marches overtures dances and popular tunes with performers Georgia Watking Shirley Berner Esther Gibbs and Duane Jury. The trio placed third in a national band contest in Indianapolis last month and earned medals Tuesday.
Herbert J. Tobler of Peru buys the William Steimle tavern building on Edward Street Henry. Nello Milanesi of Spring Valley will operate the tavern after July 1 and relocate to Henry when a house is found. Steimle retires due to health. Milanesi assists interim. Tobler plans renovations and will rent to Milanesi. sale handled by O A Davis agency.
Harold Doubet agronomist and Lyle Coolidge conservationist promote contour farming and related soil practices through the Henry CCC camp in Marshall and Putnam counties. They map soils, plan contour lines, crop rotation, strip cropping, waterways and terraces, with local farmers like Gustafson Holmes Monier Russell Read adopting the methods to reduce erosion. Tours will follow to demonstrate the program's impact.
H. A. Findall and William Barry plan a Henry based venture at the former Tindall Meat Market site. They will move equipment, install a 14 foot meat display, redecorate interiors, and add Bulman shelving for a semi self service grocery and produce section. Barry will run groceries with Harold Klein assisting.
The Henry School Band will present its first concert season in Central Park next Thursday evening. June 16. The program arranged by Arthur Blocher, director, will be published in next week's paper.
