A Friday evening Klan parade through the business district drew 4 000 to 6 000 spectators. About 100 Klanettes in robes led the march, with the Klansmen and a national lecturer later speaking at Pavilion Park.
Fire at the Ford garage in Hennepin belonging to Chester Seibert destroyed the building early Sunday. Granville firefighters saved the adjacent Bert Thomasson home and roof and side damage to the structure. Seibert’s Maxwell touring car was damaged but removed before total loss. Insurance coverage was substantial, origin of the fire unknown.
Emmett Rickey of Sparland injured his eye Sunday while repairing a tire at Moore's garage. After finishing the repair he bent to lift the tire when it blew out again and struck his eye with air talcum and grit. He received care at Dr. Royces but cannot work and endures pain.
The Girls' Club outing last Wednesday featured a picnic in the Henry park and an afternoon swim at the Henry pool. Members include Misses Geneva Schertz Geraldine Kaatz Edith McCully Geradine Foster Alice Mae Zilm Dorothy Foster Caroline Wilma and Arlene Whitten with Mrs. William Whitten.
Born to Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Wiegan d July 22 a son is welcomed as their second child and first son in Camp Grove.
A Ford touring driven by Harry Winters Jr of Venona with Lester Ruark of Magnolia and four other youths ran off the edge of a bridge at Undercliff Hill Sunday evening. The car flipped over the embankment but all occupants escaped without serious injuries. one girl sprained a ankle. The wrecking crew pulled the car free and returned home later, the engine still running and the top badly damaged.
A new electric fire siren was tested Saturday afternoon about five o clock. It emitted shrill blasts but was not heard by everyone. Officials plan to raise the siren to about thirty feet and conduct further tests so residents are not alarmed until the alarm is ready for emergency use.
A baby boy weighing three and a quarter pounds arrived last week at the local hospital to bless Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Merdian. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Conrad Merdian.
Three workers in a U S Department of Agriculture campaign have treated about 7000 common barberry bushes in old Lacon nurseries to curb black stem rust. Officials from Washington and Gordon Curran will inspect sites as rust loss runs into tens of millions annually. additional surveys cover Henry and Marshall counties with many bushes eradicated.
Miss Marion Thomas was hostess at a Sunday evening picnic at Lake Senachwine honoring her guest Miss Rachel Lundquist of Princeton. Attendees included Henry Beatty Robert Rolander Wilbur Monier Elmer Oberg Margaret Lidgard Bradford Maxine Chesney Edith Wison Mae Vail Ralph and Vivian Child.
Ten Wyomin g businessmen and the Marshall Putnam Farm Bureau executive committee attended a Kiwanis Club meeting Tuesday. A plan to form a Wyoming Kiwanis is set if enough local men show interest with the sponsor club. Henry members were to attend a Magnolia meeting Tuesday but it was postponed.
The executive committee and township directors met last Friday in the Henry National Bank community room to map the fair week program. Kids Day and Swine judging open the event with Republican Day officials present, Democratic Day featuring Judge Norman L. Jones as main speaker, plus Baby Beef Day with three night shows over four days.
Grace Louise Birck youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs Henry Birck died at Methodist hospital Peoria after a long illness She was 8 years 11 months 21 days Funeral services were held at St Patrick's Camp Grove with many relatives present Flower girls and nurses from the hospital attended The burial took place at Calvary cemetery Henry Read more was the family line and a loving remembrance poem was included
Paul W Steimle left today for the Citizens Military Training Camp at Camp Custer to serve for one month. He traveled by train from Chicago with Paul Wenk of Lacon to Holland Michigan and then to Camp Custer by trolley. Steimle has been employed at C A Woodfill Jewelry Store and many friends will miss him.
Mrs Gilbert Springer aged 27 of Milo township died early Monday from heart disease after a brief illness. She collapsed after a hot car ride visiting Edward Springer near Princeton. Born in Aurora Nebraska she married Gilbert Springer three years ago and is survived by her husband, a two year old son, her parents, two brothers and four sisters. Funeral services were held at the Mennonite church in Tiskilwa with interment in the Mennonite cemetery.
Rachel Anna Williams Scarborough, wife of William Scarborough, died in California after a months long illness. Born February 14, 1855, she spent much of her life in Varna and cared for neighbors and children, leaving five children and seven grandchildren. Funeral services were held July 17 at Wilmington California with many relatives in attendance.
George Thomas proprietor of the Chicago Fruit and Produce Co. Peoria drove from Chicago with provisions when four men in a Hudson sedan blocked his path near Henry. He sped off along the road and several shots were fired but he escaped unharmed. He halted at the Knights of Pythias hall in Chillicothe and described the incident to members. Authorities pursued the pursuing car before Thomas reached Chillicothe.
A Nash sedan driven by Miss Lola Kaiser and a Ford coupe driven by Marshall Broadus collided Friday afternoon at the corner of Main and Richard streets in this city. Both drivers escaped injury. the Ford was badly wrecked with axle fender and springs damaged while the Nash had minor damage to a bent fender and broken headlight.
George Edward Griffith, a Civil War veteran born February 5 1843 in Clear Creek Putnam County, died July 29 after a long illness of dropsy and heart weakness. Funeral services Friday at 2 pm at his home with Rev H G Dusenberry officiating, interment at Friends Meeting Grounds Clear Creek. American Legion members to conduct graveside rites.
Mrs Emma Martin and Mrs Tanner host relatives in Sparland while many others from Peoria Chicago and Berkeley travel to spots including Broadmoor Tyrone and Hennepin. Visitors include Mr Clell Anderson returning to Gary Indiana and Miss Isabelle Lutes returning from Peoria for a weeks visit with her mother Mrs S B Lutes.
The event features a First Bird on Grounds award donated by R L Anske and a Last Car to Leave Grounds flash light from William King. A married men versus single men game starts at 3 30 pm with a balloon parachute drop by Abram Bell, billed as the day’s closing feature. A Motter’s Tassel office bus departs at 11 o'clock.
The Sunday gathering in Marshall County features the Newsboys Band and a slate of races and contests for all ages. Captain Frank McGlynn of Chicago opens events with a 50 yard dash for boys under 12 and a series of prize donations from local businesses. Events include athletic races for boys and girls, a married men versus single men tug of war, and a noisy car contest with prizes from regional sponsors.
