A new water well completed in three weeks adds a 12 inch shaft 750 feet deep and a 45 horsepower pump capable of lifting 750 gallons per minute. It will provide a reliable supply for residents and aid fire protection during the summer drought.
Fifty plus girls entered the Four-H County event at Pontiac with awards in dress revue and textile projects. Winners include Joycé Baker first in Busy Bees and Shirley Ellis Read first in Senachwine Hustlers, with county representative later chosen for the State fair.
A damaging fire Saturday morning of undetermined origin destroyed the Bryant Company offices at the edge of town. The blaze, sparked about 2 30, damaged neighboring brick structures and a large vault, with losses placed between 7000 and 8000 dollars. Local Princeton Department crews fought the flames and saved nearby buildings.
State highway association announces a new $750,000 highway project from Peoria to Mossville. Peoria Paton of Commerce presents the plan as part of regional road development.
Plans proceed rapidly for the 15th annual Marshall Putnam Fair and Homecoming to be held at the Henry fairgrounds September 8 to 11. Organizers promise a bigger and better lineup of attractions and horse races than in recent years. The executive board and department superintendents are detailing every aspect, with high expectations for a standout exposition. Officers include John Garvin as president. Frank S. Clift and George A. Burt as vice presidents. Elmer Quinn as treasurer. R. H. Monier as secretary. Virginia Dauber as assistant secretary.
A lightning strike during a Monday afternoon storm set the eight ton hay filled barn on the Homer Barney farm ablaze in Hopewell township. Firefighters from Lacon fought the blaze but could not save the structure or its contents, with eight tons of hay and harnesses lost. insurance did not cover the destroyed property. The incident occurred alongside a thunderstorm that swept across the region and a nearby straw stack at the Raymond Laible farm also caught fire but was fully burned despite rain.
A batch of twenty three new titles purchased with funds from the library tag day arrive at Henry Public Library. The juvenile list includes Little Story House and Our Little Friends of the Netherlands among others. Adult fiction features Sparkenbroke Last Puritan Magnificent Obsession and The Stars Look Down. Non fiction covers Around the World in Eleven Years and Exile biography. Books circulate for one week per family.
John E. Cassidy of Peoria, an associate of Gov. Horner, reportedly in line for a top Illinois Commerce Commission appointment at Springfield. He would succeed Irvin Rooks of Chicago, who resigned as executive officer and chief counsel. Cassidy had been a candidate for a Horner state office last spring.
Merchants and civic leaders in Henry met with Eldon Armstrong and FE R. Krum to plan a new bank. The Henry Exchange and Security Trust will open in about ten days in the old First National building with cashier Gladys Sivell and safety deposit boxes. Mrs Krum is president and Armstrong helped bring the enterprise to Henry.
The west approach grading for the Illinois river bridge at Hennepin is complete. Bids for the superstructure were resubmitted after initial bids exceeded estimates. a second bid from Wisconsin Bridge and Iron Works was significantly lower and may meet regulations. Over 40,000 cubic yards of earth were moved for the completed western approach by Trumpeter & Sons.
J. T. Dauber, noted livestock dealer, sponsors another sale at Princeton on August 1. He offers 400 head of Hereford cattle including springer cows, steers, heifers and calves, plus 500 pigs. Dauber is well known to buyers in the region and his sales attract wide attention. Newspapers are used to reach buyers.
Mrs. Mary Seitz 48 wife of Fred Seitz died at home in Peru after an extended illness. She was born in Henry April 4 1888 and worked as a cashier before marriage. Survived by husband a stepdaughter mother and several siblings. Funeral services conducted in Peru with Rev. George McClary officiating. Interment in Peru Memorial mausoleum.
Frank B. Potter died Tuesday morning at his home in Henry County at age 66 from a massive cerebral hemorrhage. He was born November 12, 1869 in Magnolia, the son of Samuel and Eliza Potter. Funeral services will be held at 11 this morning at his home, conducted by Rev. W. J. Carpenter, with burial in Steary City cemetery. A. C. Lind bloom to handle arrangements. He is survived by his wife Mary Ketchum Potter. He faced infantile paralysis in youth but remained active in his repair shop.
Gene Marchetti of Tennepin and Olga Oliveri of Standard faced larceny charges after two weeks in jail but were dismissed for lack of evidence and put on probation. Mary Oliveri, the girl's mother, triggered the case over a missing item hidden at home. The couple were arrested at Ottawa and held in Henneypin jail, with the girl moved to Marshall county jail in Lacon.
John P. Dore president of the Putnam County State Bank at Hennepin recovers at his home from a sudden illness. He was hospitalized at St. Margaret's in Spring Valley for several days and is now under a nurse's care in Hennepin.
George D. Hardin of Chicago appeared to be the low bidder at $12 528 50 on a bridge construction project on State Aid route 1 northeast of Lacon when proposals were opened by the state department of highways last Saturday.
Florence Swallow of Florence in Marshall county has been announced by G B Tuttle registrar as a recipient of the University of Illinois scholarship. The four year award waives incidental fees and matriculation for a total value about 300 dollars, with official results pending university record checks.
Final plans set for the Republican county picnic at Hennepin on Thursday August 13. Principal speakers are C Wayland Brooks and Congressman Everett M Dirksen with Attorney Paul Perona also speaking briefly. Afternoon sports include a Putnam county softball game bocci ball horseshoe and pet parade with multiple local organizers.
A Saturday night clash on Lawn Ridge between James Moore and Jerry Predmore led to Moore's arrest on an assault charge. After a jury heard the case in Justice Bennett's Court at Lacon, Moore was found not guilty and released. State's Attorney Charles P. Green prosecuted. Edard I. Gale defended for Predmore.
J. J. Shugart, president of the Bureau County fair, announced the fair in Princeton will invite both political parties. Democratic Day is set for Wednesday and Republican Day for Friday. Col. Frank Knox of Chicago has indicated interest in speaking at Republican Day. no Democratic speaker is yet engaged.
The Civilian Conservation Corps unit at Henry has been ordered to vacate the camp by August 15 and return to Galva where the permanent station is located. About 50 teenage workers completed erosion projects on Marshall and Putnam county farms with farm bureau cooperation and residents regret their departure.
Pontia Marshall Putnam county 4-H squads showed well with ten counties represented and eleven girls chosen for State Fair competition. Elizabeth Doyle Henry Whitefield Happy Workers wowed with a complete outfit. Phillip Read and Shirley Morse Putnam earned top marks in clothing judging. Winifred Wabel Henry Happy Hustlers repeated county dress review win. Marian Soli Hazel Mae Crane Henry Happy Hustlers led the county in demonstration. Margaret Ann Tomlinson Swaney Community Club and Georgia Watkins Steuben Sewing Songsters tied for first in county health. both joined the district event.
Marshall county has received 542980.00 in rental and benefit payments over three years since the Agricultural Adjustment act creation. Wheat program payments total 23335.83 and corn hog payments total 519644.17. National total for three years is 1108922870.20.
Preparations by the Methodist Episcopal church of Hennepin advance for Harvest Homecoming on September 10. A three act comedy titled A Ready-made Family will be presented as the main attraction after talent tests by the committee.
