Marshall County faces a broad tax increase driven by airport expenses and school consolidation funding. Overall taxes extend about 9 thousand dollars more than last year, with varies by district and county.
Funeral services were held for Donald Eugene Monier at Brennan Funeral Home with Fr Laurence Schumacher presiding. Born July 23 at St Margaret Hospital Spring Valley and died the following day in Peoria, he is survived by his parents a sister and grandparents. The infant rests at Calvary Cemetery.
Large turnout attends first service in the remodeled St Pauls Lutheran Church Varna Celebrants include architect K Plache and church leaders. The Rev L McCauley led graveside rites at Henry City Cemetery at 10 am Tuesday for the stillborn infant son of Mr and Mrs Eugene Williams born Monday at St Marys Hospital in Galesburg. The child is not Ardia Bullington Williams. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs Bryan Williams and Mr and Mrs Harold Bullington of Henry.
City Clerk A and B sell hunting licenses as Walter F Neuhalsen previously bought the first license for several years. Virgil Connolley arrives seconds after the winner to claim his license. Licenses priced at $2, unchanged from last year.
The Prairie Grain Company of Hennepin shipped the first barge of wheat from the river elevator to the Chicago market. The shipment marks a milestone for the local facility as traders watch Chicago demand and prices.
The farmer Harry Gallup of Sparland died at Proctor Hospital after a Sunday morning train crossing collision. The coroner's inquest found Gallup drove onto the crossing into a westbound Rock Island freight. He was married to Minnie Kanive and survived by three sons, two daughters, and five grandchildren. Gallup's life centered on the family farm. he joined LaPrairie United Presbyterian Church and served on the Cemetery Association. Memorial services were held July 26 at the LaPrairie church with burial at the local cemetery.
A 1905 hearse, once used by Henry undertaker Joseph Ehringer, is moved by Jim Thornton and Clarence Hank to Henry after forty years in storage. Thornton, an antique dealer, plans no immediate use, valuing the carriage and its silver fittings as rare artifacts.
Plans for the third annual In ton Henry American Legion stag are complete. The event draws attendees from Sparland Lacon Chillicothe Peoria and beyond with relatives from Texas Montana New Jersey and other states. Beef has been ordered and prepared for roast at the Marshall Putnam Fair Grounds on August 1 rain or shine.
Kay's store reports a successful summer sale attracting many shoppers from Marshall and Putnam counties. Proprietor Kryn Danber Newton announced bargain pricing on both adults and children's clothing, with strong customer turnout last week.
Funeral services were held at the LaPrairie United Presbyterian Church at 2 30 PM Tuesday for Edson Blackwell 72 a Sparland resident who died at his Henry home after years of illness He was born October 6 1876 in Sparland to David and Rebecca Blackwell He married Estella Luft February 8 1899 and they had three sons Earle Sparland Vernon Mossville and Onaldo Micothe He served as Steuben Township road commissioner and participated in local education and church affairs He is survived by his wife three sons two sisters four brothers four grandchildren and many relatives Interment was in Norry City Cemetery Pallbearers were Andrew Calder William Madison Teland Monster C I Bussell and George Wiley.
Dr R S Bayne longtime president and organizer of the Henry Building and Loan Association retires after 26 years. Alden S Hunter elected president. directors Harold Bullington Edward Hoscheldt and Richard Finfgeld reelected for three years. Association assets total 294 038 45 with first mortgage loans and government insured loans and dividend payments noted.
Marshall Putnam Fair board funds floodlights for the amphitheatre stage area. Fourteen floodlights with 18 inch reflectors to be mounted on front of the grandstand and on poles. Installation by electricians Carl Rose and Gerald Wabel of Henry. Equipment sourced through Arlington Jockey Club at a 500 percent discount, including 3,000 feet of wire.
Yvonne Schulte of Lacon leads a 4-H popularity contest in Marshall and Putnam Counties with nine rivals. Voters drop pennies into jars to decide a boy and girl winner crowned August 4 at the fairgrounds. Proceeds fund Camp Shawwanassee modernization and wheat oat price support details follow.
Sparland High School loses two staff members Anita Pfeiffer science teacher and Lillian Curtin English teacher resign for better pay and offers. Pfeiffer will join Blue Island and Curtin has several alternatives as principal E B Jones searches in Chicago for replacements with Champaign as next stop.
