C L Swords of Peoria won the Bell Plain gravel project bid at La Rose town hall. The $1.47 per yard bid covers seven miles of graveling in two sections connecting Pattonsburg to Bell corner and the north part near Route 89 with eight feet wide and eight inches deep material from the Ryan pit three miles west of La Rote.

Fire destroys Granville barn in afternoon blaze
Fire believed caused by spontaneous combustion destroyed Philip Gordon’s barn on West Main Street Granville Friday at 5 pm. The Henry Sparling garage across the alley burned but the Sparling car was saved. The hay loft was ablaze, while Gordon’s grocery store in front was saved despite a southwest wind.

Hennepin Civil War Veteran Dies at 84 in Illinois and California
Lyle Howard Durley born April 10 1846 in Hennepin Illinois died July 20 1930 at his daughter’s home in McNabb Illinois aged 84 after 69 years in his birthplace house. He served in the Union Army 139th Illinois Infantry later farming then moving to Ventura California in 1915 where he lived until death. Survived by wife Lena May Patterson five children two deceased, two sons Williamson Mark and Lyle Howard, daughter Rey Durley Boyle, siblings Edwin M. Durley and Carrie Harper, five grandchildren. Funeral at Rey Boyle’s home conducted by Rev Paul L. Corbin with interment at Riverside cemetery Hennepin.

Four Hurt In Galena Road Auto Crash Near Mossville
Four locals were injured in a Friday night crash on the Galena road near Mossville. Mr and Mrs Gerald Wabel of Henry suffered serious injuries including a fractured leg and neck cap, with multiple cuts. Lanore Laborde of Chicago and George Mathis of Peoria were severely hurt, Edward Barr of Quincy slightly injured. Mrs Wabel faces weeks in hospital. Mr Wabel may need crutches soon.

Sparland Youth Jailed Two Released On Bond
Marshall county officers jailed Clifton Hunt after a disturbance in Sparland last Saturday night. He received a $15 fine plus costs and is serving it in jail for nonpayment. A preliminary hearing for Leroy Rolander and Harold Wilson of Princeton on a statutory charge resulted in them being bound over to the October grand jury and released on $2,500 bonds each.

Putnam County Farmer Dies of Heat Prostration
Peter Gaddo aged 54 collapsed in his garden after a hot afternoon of work and died soon after. An inquest led by Coroner C L Howe of Streator found heat prostration as the cause. Gaddo had lived at Standard for about twenty years and left a wife and six children.

The program featured the one act play Detour Ahead by Ethel Barrymore, cast Linda Ramsey Floyd Crawtree David Ramsey Sam Crabtree Jim Moorehead Mrs Moorehead Maxine Chesney Chuck Allen Walter Overbeck, and remarks by W E Roberts Illinois Agricultural Association. Fire department responded to a burner flare up on an oil stove at the Henry Meister soft drink parlor. The blaze scorched oil cloth wall and caused heavy smoke behind the stove but was quickly controlled with a chemical tank. Only minor damage to wall and ceiling required repaint.

Brace of Bandits Waylay Henryite on Monday Eve
Gus Johnson proprietor of The Newport was held up near the Charles P Green residence on Thomas Street by two bandits in a non descriptive car. They took $16 in cash a $75 check a ruby ring a bank book and keys. the scene yielded the keys later and fragments of the $75 check were found. The assault occurred about 11:30 PM after closing. Police responded but the car escaped. Johnson suspects the heavier bandit had visited The Newport earlier and remarked that Henry folk go to bed with the chickens.
