Road work on Western Avenue between Henry and Redtown Corners paused for a day due to heavy rain Tuesday night. The Standard Paving Company resumed after drying, with about one and a half miles graded and gravelled ready for black topping later this fall. The project aims to widen and modernize the road with deep drainage, and a campaign to extend blacktop to Route 88 will follow.
In a small town Ray Keegan, a local barber, had his name called 100 times in connection with a $350 cash award. Ed Brennan announces a joint Henry Lacon Legion barbecue at Marshall Putnam Fair Grounds on Sunday August 1. About 700 pounds of beef will feed a capacity crowd at their third annual event. Last year 600 men attended and organizers expect a larger turnout. Meat will be roasted at Spring Valley and moved to the fair grounds Sunday morning August 1. If rain, the event will be held under the grandstand.
Readers report extraordinary corn growth in Mar shall and Putnam Counties. John Morgensen and Henry Hatcheryman noted sweet corn reaching ten feet tall, while Mr and Mrs Mervin Hall later reported patches exceeding one additional foot, signaling a remarkable harvest season.

Neal Smith a student of Mrs Dorothy Reid of the House of Munster Peoria is a finalist in the accordion contest at the Chicagoland Music Festival to be held Saturday August 14 at Soldier Field. He appears with Reid's Accordioneers State champ band. A 40 piece all marimba orchestra under Carolyn Reid Slaney directs the ensemble. Neal and these groups also perform at the Leonorea Music Festival in Peoria Tuesday August 10 at Peoria Stadium and the Peoria Festival is free.
The Henry Senachwine school board offered a contract this week to Miss Barbara Ellen Mackie of Williamsfield for the Home Economics teacher position left vacant by Margaret Poole's resignation. Mackie, a graduate of pater University, is pursuing a Master's degree and has teaching experience from Glasford. The English teacher vacancy remains to be filled.
Harvey Bauman and his son Floyd prepare the Marshall P utnam Fair society horse show with top judges John Remie and William Porter, emphasizing merit over owner influence. The track is widened and lights installed for the early August show stage. Floyd runs Park Hill House in Rutland. stables from Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, and Missouri supply entrants.
Farm adviser Paul Laffey notes excellent corn prospects across the Corn Belt but Saratoga and nearby counties report top oat yields. Joe Malone of Henry is recuperating at home after two operations at St. Margaret's Hospital Spring Valley to amputate his right thumb. The first procedure removed the damaged portion up to the first joint, and a second operation removed the remainder to the second joint after slow healing. He is gradually improving at his parents’ home and will likely be away from work at the La Con Woolen Mill for some time.
Herb Tobler of Peru hosted 76 members of the Peru and Spring Valley Rotary Clubs and guests for a turtle dinner at his lakeside home on Thursday. Tobler, owner of the Tobler Transfer Company, noted for inviting the clubs to his home annually, served dinner in his basement with a view of the lake.
Mrs. Harry Carruthers 54 dies at home one mile east of Toluca after illness of several weeks. Funeral at Toluca Christian Church Thursday afternoon with Rev. L H Appel officiating. Interment in Antioch Cemetery. Cinaya Ruble daughter of David and Julia Ruble born Sheldon Iowa April 6 1894 came to Toluca with parents at age 12. She married Harry Carruthers. Her mother and husband survive. father and one brother preceded her.
Memorial services for Private James Anderson will be held at the Baptist Church in Sparland at 2 30 p m Sunday July 25. He was killed in action at St Lo France July 16 1944. Remains arrival in Sparland expected Saturday morning. Memorials will be conducted by Sparland and Lacon American Legion posts. Anderson born Sparland June 10 1909 married Anna Mae Christman March 11 1935. He entered infantry service October 16 1943 trained at Camp Wolters Texas then Fort Meade Md overseas to Ireland England and France where he paid the supreme sacrifice after less than nine months service. Memorial services were held in Sparland September 3 1944.
Government weather observer Haddon Perdew Henry reported over two inches of rainfall in two days with 1.46 inches on Wednesday and 1.87 on Thursday morning. The total reached 2.83 inches, affecting fields where ants were believed to be harmed.
FR J Fennell of Camp Grove bought the old city waterworks property in Chillicothe to house J T Fennell Company contractors manufacturers. The firm works on sub contracts for George Tractor Company of Sullivan MI and plans to establish a full machine shop to manufacture tractor parts from blueprints. Several people will be employed when the plant begins operation.
Rev F Alvin Park a Bartonville Republican candidate for Congress last April left for Pawling New York to confer with Governor Dewey the Republican presidential nominee on term problems. Also joining the talks are Rep Clifford Hope and Senator George Ike both noted on agriculture committees. Park runs two area farms including Saree near Toluca and Wenona and spoke with Roosevelt in 1943 on wartime food production.
Democrats of Marshall County met last night to discuss County Judge D. M. Gregg's possible bid for circuit court judge in the district. If he runs, he would seek the Democratic nomination in the upcoming special election.
Marshall Putnam 4 H girls and boys sponsor a penny vote popularity contest to raise funds for Camp Shawwaw nassee in Kankakee County. Proceeds benefit the camp's modernization and programs teaching citizenship, rural life skills, health, and nature study. Finalists listed include Emma Waldschmidt Doreen Pairon Yvonne Schutte Esther Read Peggy Ransom and five male contestants. Camp attendees from Marshall and Putnam Counties are named with a note that funds go to the camp fund.
