Sparland church schedules list youth and worship services with a July 23 board meeting and a July 21 camp event. Camp counselors, family visits, a baby girl birth, Homemakers meeting, and 4-H activities are noted along with local funeral attendances and community notices.
At county 4 H foods day four girls were picked to represent Marshall Putnam at the Illinois State Fair in August. Chris Wilson McNabb won top honors with A Hearty Sandwich for Hungry Teens. Alternate delegates include Martha Downey and Lori Seiler with Pancakes Dessert Style.
Secretary of State Paul Powell announces Driver License Division actions for Marshall County. Suspension: James A Rebholz of Sparland for three violations.
In Illinois 10th Judicial Circuit a bar poll of 209 lawyers from Marshall, Peoria, Putnam, Stark and Tazewell counties recommends five Democrats and six Republicans for judge. Edward E. Haugens is named among the Republican slate, with others named including Covey, Hunt, Lipkin, Vespa, Williamson and Yontz. Costigan notes purpose is to inform conventions and voters.
A two year old,Scott Hoge, wandered from his Wenona home with his dog last Wednesday evening and was found unharmed hours later. Family and local volunteers searched two cornfields and an oat field near the Hoge farm before locating him about a quarter mile east of the house. The search involved over 200 residents plus state and county authorities.
Miss Juanita Van Ostrand of Pontiac travels with Sandra Eheart of Livingston County to Aurora for a week of rehearsals and preliminary judging as Miss Eheart competes for Miss Illinois. Van Ostrand serves as chaperone and accompanist for Eheart’s vocal solo, with Eheart once a former student of Van Ostrand. The pair stay at Aurora College during the event.
George E. Malavolti 73 of rural Hennepin died Sunday after eight months of illness at St. Margaret's Hospital where he had been a patient one month. Born in Modena Italy he came to the United States in 1913 worked at the Mark mine and as a farmer. He married Mary Nanni May 4 1919 in Princeton. A World War I veteran he belonged to St Patrick's Church American Legion Post 180 Granville and is survived by his wife four sons four daughters 33 grandchildren and three great grandchildren plus two brothers and two sisters. Burial was in St Anthony's Cemetery Hennepin.
Henry Post 323 American Legion elected new officers for the coming year at a July 10 meeting. Commander Mike Malone Sr led a slate including Goebel, Morgensen, Ries, Maddox, Keegan, Moline, Wood and an executive committee of Hoffman, Barry, Newman, Smith, and Chapman. The group praised the Fourth of July project as highly successful and planned installation at the next meeting.
Workers in the plant protection department of Jones and Laughlin Steel Hennepin Works voted 5 to 1 to unionize with the International Union United Plant Guard Workers of America and Amalgamated Local No. 235 serving as bargaining agent. The vote, held at 6 45 a.m. Wednesday, had eight eligible voters and two spoiled ballots, with unionization taking effect immediately.
Lester Lewis, living about 13 miles west of Henry, reports three yearling steers died after grazing on brush trimmings from yew evergreens placed on a brush pile at Saratoga United Methodist Church. A veterinarian confirmed death from eating the trimmings and notes yew can be poisonous to cattle and horses.
Marshall Putnam County 4 H’ers prepare for the 4 H Fair at Henry Fairgrounds July 25 and 26. The event features judging of projects starting 9 00 each day with beef and other livestock shows, dress revue, livestock parade and a candle lighting ceremony marking the close.
