In a detailed briefing, E Batti hosts Henry inspect the new high school site. The plan features an all-metal locker area, a large study room, modern lighting, and climate control. The design prioritizes efficiency, with thermostats, reinforced corridors, and a central gymnasium connected to a main corridor.
John Thomas of Sheffield and Marvin Johnson of Putnam will be guest speakers next Monday noon before the Henry Rotary club. Thomas, Republican chairman of Bureau county, was a principal delegate to the Republican national convention in Chicago last week, Johnson an alternate delegate. They will overview convention operation and answer questions.
Work started last Wednesday on a 20 by 30 foot addition to the east end of the MP Farm Bureau building in Henry. The project, funded by the Farm Bureau itself for the benefit of the MP-Locker service, will be brick veneer concrete block construction and finish by month end. It will include a receiving room for meat carcasses, lard rendering, gas-fired equipment, and hog and beef skinning facilities for area farmers. Harold Hartady and John Martin began laying blocks.
Varna Rotarians heard a brief, impressive talk on loyalty by Dr. Clarence Gibson, superintendent of Norfolk General Hospital, a Varna native and nephew of Dr. John P. Johnson. He urged loyalty to country, community, business ethics, church, deity, and self, praising Paul Harris and Rotary ideals. Visiting Rotarians joined local members for a fried chicken supper, with Mrs. Bertha Cress absent.
The First National Bank of Chillicothe joins a nationwide bank effort selling Carver Washington half dollars for 2.00 each to raise funds for a program promoting Americanism among Negro youth. The aims include instilling American ideals, exposing the Negro masses to Americanism, eradicating poverty, and encouraging community participation while fostering patriotism and rejection of communism.
Marvin Johnson of Putnam an alternate from the 18th district returns from the Republican national convention exhausted but hopeful. He praises Eisenhower as a strong nominee while noting Taft supporters faced setbacks and Illinois delegates shifted to Eisenhower after the first ballot. Johnson commends Dirksen and Stratton for effective delegation leadership and predicts party unity behind the eventual ticket.
John Deere dealer Belsly Implement in Lac on announces two new heavy duty John Deere 2 plow and 3 plow tractors as successors to Models A and B. Owner Mark Belsly says the models showcase engineering advances and offer the greatest values yet. One model will be on display on Saturday July 19 with free coffee doughnuts and door prizes for visitors.
Attorney General Ivan Elliot plans to urge the 1953 general assembly to overhaul the fireworks law amid confusion from conflicting statutes. The most recent ban restricts sales to sparklers, while earlier laws were lenient and produced contradictory court decisions. Citizens favor the restrictions but many still obtain fireworks from outside the state or illegal sources, risking children’s safety.
Sheriff Zenas Graves and Deputy Park McAllister respond to two teenage runaways from Chicago Joe Gushi and Ronnie Bain after a joyride ending in a damaged fence near Walter Wink home. They fled toward Toluca’s business district but were captured with police help. They were turned over to Chicago authorities next day.
The News-Republican welcomes voices from all sides on political subjects and requires writers to identify themselves on file. It will not publish slanderous or personal attacks even if signed, and will provide space for Republican and Democratic viewpoints alike.
Kenneth Newell son of James Newell, the local Peoria Journal carrier, won a trip to Peoria for adding more new subscribers than any other carrier in Henry. The prize group toured the newspaper plant, visited Glen Oak park for a picnic, attended stock car races, stayed overnight with district manager Bob Ingram, and returned to Henry the next morning after a trip through the Panama Canal area.
Marshall county paid 20 456.97 dollars and Putnam 3 805.17 dollars in April as state revenue figures show a slight gain over March. Henry leads with 6 826.98 dollars, followed by Lacon at 4 600.49 dollars.
Tax figures break down major goods in Marshall and nearby counties. Marshall County April food taxes totaled 4 749 60, about 23 percent of all payments, followed by lumber and building hardware at 3 845 34 and gasoline and oil trucks at 3 174 95. Other items include eating and drinking places 704 08 and all other sources 608 77. Nearby counties show variations with new automobile sales, building supplies, and general merchandise.
A plan to shift equipment from the old building to Henry-Senachwine High School is proposed as a district wide community project. Volunteers and additional trucks will be needed to speed the move and reduce costs, with the News-Republican reporting forthcoming dates and plans.
A crew of 100 workers began detasseling in Griffith Seed Co fields at Mc Nabb on Monday morning. Machines are adjusted for the task and all workers are described as capable talent. Detasseling is well underway for the season with veterans returning and new recruits joining annually. The Gerry fields project is now organized and aims to ease the usual detasseling burdens.
Moews Seed company Granville expects to finish detasseling about 3400 acres of seed corn in roughly three weeks. Some 450 boys and girls work this week under 16 supervisors. 68 detasseling machines operate in the fields. Robert Kidd is the general supervisor. Moons fields were sprayed last week for corn borers.
Deposits in Marshall and Putnam counties along with nearby communities hold at all time high levels. Figures released in recent statements show June 30 totals for banks in Marshall Putnam and nearby towns.
Owen Church of Princeton, a Pioneer Hybrid Seed Corn field representative, visited Henry on Tuesday to recruit about 50 local youths for detasseling hybrid seed corn in Wyoming. The firm farms 750 acres there and will run a daily bus from Henry if enough help is found, with similar operations from Sparland and Lacon to Streator covering about 400 acres of seed corn fields.
Repairs continued on Henry Pool after leaks forced further emptying and patching. Harmady crew resealed seams with hot asphalt while Monday and Tuesday efforts followed, delaying reopening to Thursday afternoon and leaving would-be bathers disappointed. The pool remains popular with youths and adults seeking relief from heat, and life guard Marshall Stoner ensures safety.
Wilbur Long a Henry resident training and driving horses placed fifth among the top 10 after 12 of 42 nights at Sportsman's Park Cleoro ML with four wins and two places. Edger Leonard led the standings with Clarence Curtis close behind as pacers drew attention while Derby trials shift focus to trotters. Long trains for several owners at MP fairgrounds in the off season.
Rain delayed a county conservation air tour at Lacon airport yet drew about 50 riders on eight flights in a display organized by Harold Frey and a ground crew. Flyers included Harold Frey and others from Henry, McNabb, Varna, and Princeton. directors Wilbur Sutherland, Sewall Townsend, Carl Schoepke, and farm adviser Harris briefed passengers on participating cooperatives. Passengers praised clear views of rebuilt topsoil farms and many asked to view their own properties on detours.

Dr E L Gibson pastor of Henry Presbyterian church spoke before the Lacon Rotary club this noon. His subject was Fellowship, a prime objective of the Rotary organization.
