GROUNDWORK ON BACON BRIDGE MAY BEGIN THIS SUMMER
A new 1507 foot long bridge across the Illinois river at Lacon may have its fills and piers let this summer according to R M Barnes of Lacon. The structure should be finished by late next year if details are settled in coming months. Traffic may be stopped temporarily during construction. The bridge will be 47 feet above high water and use the current Lacon Sparland dike for approaches. Toll was removed last December 1 and the bridge now operates as a free crossing by the state highway department.

Elephant Tooth Found At Chillicothe Gravel Pit
Workmen at the Chillicothe gravel pit unearthed an elephant tooth believed to be 7 000 to 8 000 years old. The tooth, in good condition and weighing about six percent pounds, was found during excavation for a grade school foundation. Fires Flaring Near Tonica Threaten Oat Fields
Drought created tinder like conditions as three oat field fires broke out near Tonica on Saturday. Farmers and Tonica residents checked the flames with minimal damage. Two fires occurred west of Tonica along the Illinois Central tracks on the hard road in Fred Jones and Warren Grant fields. The third fire struck the Simon Baker farm east of Tonica.
